HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-02-16 - BLT - 03 Library Activities NEWPORT BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY To: Board of Library Trustees From: Tim Hetherton, Library Services Director Re: Report of Library Activities – February 16, 2016 Meeting _________________________________________________________________________________ TIM HETHERTON, LIBRARY SERVICES DIRECTOR “A library is a different kind of social reality (of the three dimensional kind), which by its very existence teaches a system of values beyond the fiscal.” ― Zadie Smith Fiscal Year 2016/17 Capital Improvement Projects meeting: On Monday, January 11, the Library Administration met with Public Works deputy Director Mark Vukojevic to discuss capital improvement projects. Projects for the next fiscal year include a renovation of the 1st floor public restrooms in the Central Library, and the renovation of the restroom in Children’s Services. Language People: On Wednesday, January 20, I attended a presentation by Language People, a vendor that offers ADA compliant Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) for deaf patrons. Remote interpreting is a solution when a face-to-face sign language interpreter is not available. Interpreting is accomplished by means of a kiosk that allows for 3 way communication between the patron, the interpreter, and the staff person. This is a potential solution for all of the City’s service counters that fosters inclusion and encourages the same excellent service for all of our customers. DAVE CURTIS, LIBRARY SERVICES MANAGER New Timesheet Software As part of the City’s migration to the new Tyler Munis ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system, staff began using the new Timesheet module in January. This took some training and getting used to. Many thanks to the supervisors for getting everyone squared away with the new method, especially Elaine McMillion! Shades Replacement The Foundation supported the replacement of 15 shades upstairs at the Central Library. The new shades were installed in January and look great. The patrons now have the flexibility to adjust the shades’ height to their liking. The previous shades were all set to the same height and not all patrons were able to be happy. This is a great fix/improvement. MELISSA KELLY, SUPPORT SERVICES COORDINATOR Literacy The Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy group has signed the author Gregg Hurwitz to be the speaker at this year’s Gift of Literacy Luncheon. Gregg is author of novels, comic books and screen plays. His latest book, OrphanX, has recently been released and Bradley Cooper has signed on to develop it into a film. Mark your calendars, the Gift of Literacy luncheon will be held on Friday, June 3rd. The Literacy program recently launched an online Tutor Training Course developed by the California Library Literacy Services. Our program is one of 20 programs statewide selected to test this new online tutor training course. We are hoping that it will encourage more volunteer tutors due to its convenient online accessibility. Clerk Training The Library clerks had their quarterly training session at the end of January. The main focus was the Media Lab. Library Assistant Greg Johnson talked to the group and answered questions about the various pieces of hardware and software in the Media and Sound labs. This gives the staff a better understanding of the info to pass on to customers and help them in doing “on the desk” marketing of this service. Facilities Fong Tse of Public Works and Rubio Medina of RM Architecture met with us in January to begin the planning of the remodel of the public restrooms at the Central Library and Mariners. We hope to get this project started in late summer. The winds whipped through the bamboo courtyard on the last day of the month and wreaked havoc on the patio umbrellas. We will be repairing a couple of the umbrellas, but the others will need to be replaced. DEBBIE WALKER, BRANCH AND YOUTH SERVICES COORDINATOR Branches Due to increasingly large crowds at both the very popular Books & Babies (Wednesday) and Toddler Storytimes (Thursday) at Mariners, effective the last week of January and going forward, two sessions will be offered for each storytime. In addition to the program at 10:30 am, another storytime will be offered at 9:30 am. It is hoped that this will help alleviate the crowding and make each event more enjoyable for all in attendance. Fancy Nancy was the theme for a fun and glittery program at Balboa while CDM offered Valentine crafts at the end of the month and Mariners had a tasty and edible program based on Eric Carle’s book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Youth Services On January 16, Sunshine Storyteller Ina Buckner-Barnette presented a wonderful and popular program that incorporated African and African-American historical folklore in addition to tributes to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month. Well over 100 children and their adults were in attendance for this special Family Storytime. Children’s Librarian Joanna Ransom worked her last day on Monday, February 1 before heading up to Salem, Oregon to begin her new life there. The recruitment process to fill her position is in place with HR. The good news is that Liz Aaron returned from her maternity leave in mid-January so that she and Joanna had some time to work together before Joanna left her position. The Children’s area continues to get a facelift as four new tables and twenty chairs arrived in January to replace furniture that had been in the room since the building opened. The furniture was purchased with funding generously provided by the Foundation and was assembled in record time by Eddie (thanks!). Teen Services YAAC met on January 13th. Joanna announced at that meeting that she would be leaving the library prior to the next meeting in February. Greg Johnson has been co-hosting with Joanna and will continue to do so at this time. Adult Reference Librarian Hannah Haase will assist Greg in the coming months also. Teen Tech Week was discussed and plans presented to host an event in the Media Lab during that week (March 6th – 12th). NATALIE BASMACIYAN, ADULT SERVICES COORDINATOR CPAP Grant Proposal The Newport Beach Public Library applied for a California Preservation Assessment Project grant to digitize the Daily Pilot newspaper microfilm. Let’s Talk Tech Classes Library Assistant Greg Johnson continues to host classes featuring the Media Lab software and the Lynda.com database. Topics in January included Photoshop and Pro Tools. Manuscripts Book Discussion Group The Foundation Book Discussion Group met last Wednesday to discuss The Barbarian Nurseries, a novel set in Orange County and written by Los Angeles Times Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Hector Tobar. 59 people attended, including six first-timers.
