TITLE: Corona del Mar Branch Library Update
_____________________________________________________________________________________
On Tuesday, January 26, the Library Administration, along with Public Works staff, met with Architect
Kelley Needham and staff from WLC Architects to discuss a number of operational issues with the new
CDM Branch Library. Library staff feels that the space needs to be flexible with as little fixed equipment
and furniture as possible. Staff provided the linear feet of shelving by category, which closely matched
the architect’s projected amount. This means that there will not be a reduction of collections due to
space requirements.
Possible alternatives for the glass wall at the patio were discussed. Sliding panels with a fixed track may
be a possibility. The building will have the addition of a structural column which will make the building
more structurally sound and cost effective.
Staff requested the following details:
The HVAC system should be as simple to operate as possible.
There should be suitable space for a public copier, self-checkout kiosk and OPAC.
Staff also requested the provision of a hold shelf.
Individual carrels with electrical power are preferred over multi-use study tables.
The staff break room should contain a sink and location for coffee maker, microwave, and craft
preparation.
Space for a scanner/copier/printer and a cash register should be provided at the circulation
desk.
Electrical outlets at the patio should have lockable covers and be on a single independent circuit.
Wi-Fi should be “robust” and easily accessible from the reading porch.
Ceramic tile will be used at the restrooms and drinking fountain area. The drinking fountain
should include a bottle filler.
Any recessed floor boxes should contain power only.
The existing book drop should be re-used at the new facility.
The entry sculpture at the existing facility, Seagulls in Flight, will hopefully be relocated to the
new branch.
An Early Literacy Station should be implemented in the children’s area.
Natural light with sun controls should be implemented wherever possible through the clerestory
windows at the back wall area.
Mobile stacks were recommended as dividers of space, especially in the children’s area.
The Children’s area should incorporate a system/method where small decorations/paper crafts
can be hung from the ceiling, similar to the fabric wrapped tack board cloud in the Main
Library’s children’s area.
A Bibliotheca RFID scanner will be installed at the entrance/exit.
The inclusion of the Rex Brandt piece has still not been determined. Issues with space, shelving,
millwork, and exposure to sunlight will need to be considered before making a determination.
