Re: Report of Library Activities – April 18, 2016 Meeting

TIM HETHERTON, LIBRARY SERVICES DIRECTOR
See you later, Dave Curtis
Library Services Manager Dave Curtis was appointed as the new Director of the Orange Public
Library on April 11. During his tenure as Library Services Manager, Dave revamped the Popular
Library, re-branded the Media Lab and spruced up Mariners and Balboa with fresh paint and
furniture. Soon the Electronic Village will benefit from the Dave Curtis treatment. Little and big things
he did to our buildings are making a big difference.
Dave has also been a valuable liaison to City IT and served as manager for the CENIC project, which
in layman’s terms will make Internet access in the Library crazy-fast - 100-Gigabits per second - with
access to research and educational networks previously beyond our grasp. Dave also worked with
Web Team to jump-start the eBranch and enhance the look and functionality of our soon-to-be-
revealed new web page.
He immediately became the Library’s hiring manager in 2014 and is responsible for all the great new
additions to our staff who are becoming our valued colleagues and are making a huge difference to
our customers.
Dave augmented the Library Use Policy and generally informed his work with a customer-centered
philosophy that I greatly appreciate.
So I wasn’t the least bit surprised when he told me that the City of Orange had hired him as Library
Director and that he was leaving NBPL on Thursday, April 21.
I am glad that I have had the opportunity to cross paths with Dave. He has been a great advisor and
a good friend. I wish him the best of luck at Orange Public Library where the public and staff will
benefit from his leadership and the same “fresh eyes” he brought to NBPL.
Newport Harbor Alumnae Panhellenic
On Wednesday, March 23, I presented an overview of NBPL resources and services to the Newport
Harbor Alumnae Panhellenic at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. An Alumnae Panhellenic
Association is a community based organization, affiliated with National Panhellenic Conference,
whose membership is composed of representative alumnae from NPC member group fraternities.
Alumnae Panhellenics offer alumnae of the 26 member groups of the National Panhellenic
Conference further leadership and social opportunities, beyond the college years. An APH represents
an ongoing commitment of women to promote and foster the Greek experience. The Newport Harbor
Alumnae Panhellenic works to foster constructive relationships with the colleges and universities in
the Southern Orange County area. They have both local alumnae chapter representatives and social
members who provide input and governance. They provide scholarships to National Panhellenic
Conference women through two different awards. The Daphne Award goes to National Panhellenic
Conference women who attend the University of California, Irvine (UCI); and the Minerva Award
recognizes outstanding National Panhellenic Conference women who attended one of our 15 area
high schools and now attend a Southern California Council of Alumnae Panhellenic area university.
CENIC
As mentioned earlier, over the past year, Dave Curtis has worked with City IT to help NBPL
participate in the CENIC project. As the CENIC website states: “CENIC – the Corporation for
Education Network Initiatives in California - connects California to the world, advancing education and
research statewide by providing the world-class network essential for innovation, collaboration and
economic growth. The nonprofit organization operates the California Research and Education
Network (CalREN), a high-capacity network designed to meet the unique requirements of over 20
million users, including the vast majority of K-20 students together with educators, researchers and
other vital public-serving institutions. CENIC’s Charter Associates are part of the world’s largest
education system; they include the California K-12 system, California Community Colleges, the
California State University system, California’s Public Libraries, the University of California system,
Stanford, Caltech, and USC. CENIC also provides connectivity to leading-edge institutions and
industry research organizations around the world, serving the public as a catalyst for a vibrant
California.”
What this means for NBPL: faster Internet connectivity (100-Gigabit per second), more bandwidth,
and new access to research and educational networks.
DAVE CURTIS, LIBRARY SERVICES MANAGER
Lighting improvements got underway upstairs at Central in March. Sunset Lighting started refitting a
dormant lighting system with bulbs and ballasts. The improved lighting in reading areas is noticeable
and appreciated by staff and our users.
The work on the upgrading of the public computing area at Central saw electrical work completed and
new network cabling installed. Furniture fabricators finished up the custom pieces. New desks,
computers, chairs and layout will be done next week!
MELISSA KELLY, SUPPORT SERVICES COORDINATOR
Facilities
The new public use copiers, were purchased and installed by the City’s IT department. The new
copiers offer customers the choice of color copying as well as black and white. The copiers were
installed at the Central Library, 1st & 2nd floor, the Mariners Branch and the Balboa Branch. The
Library chose to wait until the new construction is completed at the Corona del Mar Branch before
installing a new copier at that location. The Library has asked Finance and IT to hold the funds that
were allocated for the CDM copier until the next fiscal year.
The palm trees in front of the Central Library were trimmed and had the fruit
bundles removed before they could fall to the ground.
Literacy
Literacy continues the testing of the State’s on-line tutor training program and we have graduated our
first group of tutors who completed their training online.
City Projects
The Library worked with the City’s Purchasing Agent on rating potential vendors for the city-wide
custodial contract and copier maintenance contract.
DEBBIE WALKER, BRANCH AND YOUTH SERVICES COORDINATOR
Branches
Programming at branches was varied in March. Balboa hosted a Fairy Tale Crafts event while
Mariners celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday and children visiting CDM made kites, flags and wind
chimes for a “Windy Craft” themed program. Outreach opportunities included a first grade class visit
to Balboa by Newport Elementary students and a group of Daisy Girl Scouts got a “behind the
scenes” look at library operations at the Mariners Branch.
The March Library Board of Trustees meeting was held at Balboa where Branch Librarian Evelyn
Rogers presented the Balboa Branch annual report and fielded questions from Board members
regarding Branch operations. In personnel news, Part-time Library Assistant Sarah Emmerson began
her transition to fill the position at Mariners that was vacated when Alex Jenkins was promoted to the
Librarian I position.
Youth Services
Forty children and their adults attended a “Spring Gardening and Crafts” at Central on March 17. Not
only did participants have the chance to hear a variety of stories about gardening and plants, every
child in attendance decorated a “spring” bag and planted sweet peas out in the Children’s Garden in a
container they were able to take home (in their bag). The NBPL Foundation sponsored Making
Memories program offered two “Art in the Spring” workshops where participants created their own
fantastic creatures while learning a variety of art techniques. The City Arts Commission sponsored
another extremely popular Festival Ballet Theatre program on Saturday, March 19. The Friends
Room at Central was filled to capacity as families enjoyed a presentation of the beloved classical
ballet, “Sleeping Beauty.”
Teen Services
YAAC members welcomed Librarian Alex Jenkins as a guest and gave their feedback on the Teen
Center at Central. They also discussed current movies and books and had fun with Easter-related
trivia. Due to the Spring Break schedule there will be no YAAC meeting in April.
NATALIE BASMACIYAN, ADULT SERVICES COORDINATOR
Manuscripts Book Discussion Group
The March meeting of the NBPL Foundation’s Book Discussion Group was held on the 9th and David
Mitchell’s book Black Swan Green was discussed. 38 people attended. Next month’s group will be
held on April 13th. The group will be discussing the book Station Eleven by Emily St. John
Mandel. This event is held in the Friend’s Room from 9:30-11:00 a.m. on the second Wednesday of
the month from September to June. The event is free and open to the public.
Teen Tech Week Event
Librarian Alex Jenkins and Library Assistant Greg Johnson hosted a Teen tech Week event in the
Media Lab. Attendees learned about the Media Lab and Sound Lab resources, and observed
demonstrations of the equipment.
