Katella Avenue Anaheim, California 92805 Attention: Mr. Richard Plump Subject: Material Compaction Test Results Hoag Hospital Private Roadway One Hoag Drive Newport Beach, California Project No. 2G-1604008 Dear Mr. Plump: May 3, 2016 In accordance with your request, Giles Engineering Associates, Inc. (Giles) performed compaction testing on existing cement -treated base and the underlying subgrade soils at four locations within the existing private drive at the site. The location of the private drive is in the southwestern portion of the Hoag Hospital complex, behind the building referenced by the address of 47 Hoag Drive. Prior to our arrival, the existing asphalt pavement was removed by the contractor (KGC) at four test areas. The density tests within the exposed base course were performed utilizing a nuclear gauge, per ASTM D-6938. Following density testing within the base course, the base course was excavated by hand (by KGC) to expose the underlying subgrade soils. However, due to refusal within the base course at location #4, the subgrade at that location was not tested. In- situ density tests were subsequently performed within the exposed subgrade, also per ASTM D- 6938. The approximate locations of the density tests are attached. A representative sample of the base course and subgrade soil were collected and returned to our laboratory to determine the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of each material in accordance with ASTM D-1557. The results of the field and laboratory testing are attached and indicate that the subgrade and base course at the locations tested possess a relative compaction of at least 95% and these materials are considered to be geotechnically suitable. In addition, the thickness of the existing pavement and base course was measured at the test locations and those measured thicknesses are noted below: Test Location Asphalt Thickness (inches) Base Course Thickness (in) 1 3 4-'/ 2 3 6 3 3 6 4 4 Refusal -not measured 1965 North Main Street • Orange, CA 92865 714/279-0817 • Fax 714/279.9687 , E-Mail losangeles@gilesengr.com ti GILES GILES ENGINEERING DISSOCIATES, INC.
