From: Tim Hetherton, Library Services Director
Re: Report of Library Activities – May 16, 2016 Meeting

TIM HETHERTON, LIBRARY SERVICES DIRECTOR
Staffing
We welcomed 3 new staff members in April. Danielle Doi and Melinda Vogel started on Monday, April
4th in their positions of part-time Library Assistants. Full-time Librarian, Nadia Dallstream joined the
Children’s team on April 25th. The recruitment for the Library Services Manager position opens on
May 14.
Electronic Village
The 2nd floor public computer area was refurbished the last week of April. New individual carrels with
power and USB plugs, along with new PCs were installed. The new workstations, which are similar to
the workstations in the quiet study area of the 2013 expansion, include comfortable, adjustable desk
chairs and more desk space per station. This project was generously funded by the NBPL
Foundation.
PLA Conference
Librarian II Rebecca Lightfoot and Librarian I Hannah Haase attended the Public Library Association
Conference in Denver from April 5 – 9. They enthusiastically returned to NBPL rife with information
on circulating tech collections, data driven collection development, facility planning, customer-friendly
space design, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming, and building digitally
inclusive communities. For all the Library staff unable to make the trek to Denver, virtual PLA
Conference sessions were shown in the conference room on Thursday, 4/7th and Friday, 4/8th.
MELISSA KELLY, SUPPORT SERVICES COORDINATOR
Literacy
Literacy volunteer, Helene Chaban was honored at the Orange County Spirit of Volunteerism Awards
on April 28, 2016. Helene joined our program two years ago as a volunteer tutor with one adult
learner. Soon, she took on another and another; teaching them not only literacy skills but changing
their lives with her life skills lessons and friendship. In 2015, Helene stepped up to chair our annual
fundraising event, The Gift of Literacy Luncheon. Her calm leadership and innate style inspired the
committee and the community to support Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy, making the 2015 luncheon one
of our most successful. Helene has not stopped here… always looking for the next mountain, she has
now started to volunteer at the Friends of the Library bookstore. Helene has been a terrific asset to
the Literacy program and the Library.
DEBBIE WALKER, BRANCH AND YOUTH SERVICES COORDINATOR
Branches
For all Library locations the big news in April was National Library Week (NLW) which began on
Sunday, April 10 and ended on Saturday, April 16. As always, City Leaders and Library Board
members were invited to participate in the weekly storytime of their choice. Mayor Diane Dixon
presented Preschool Storytime at Balboa and Board of Library Trustee Jill Johnson-Tucker had a
great time presenting Preschool Storytime at CDM. Additional special events to celebrate the week
included magician Fantastick Patrick at CDM and a very interactive Let’s Make Comics! workshop at
Balboa.
Because of the close proximity of the date, it was decided that NLW was the perfect forum to
celebrate the ten year anniversary of the opening of the Crean Mariners Branch (actual date April 20,
2006). The students at Mariners Elementary all made special birthday cards for the occasion which
were put on display on two large bulletin boards in the Children’s area and storytimes throughout the
week reflected a birthday theme. The week ended with a bang when over 100 children and their
adults were entertained with the comedy and magic of Abbit the Average and then stayed after the
show to enjoy birthday cake, lemonade and freshly made popcorn. It’s been a great ten years for
Mariners and we wish them many more to come.
Youth Services
Central also had many special and fun events to celebrate NLW. There were several special
storytime guests as well. Board of Library Trustees who participated included Robyn Grant (Toddler
Storytime) and John Prichard (Family Storytime). Tony Petros, City Council Member, read books and
sang songs for Songs & Stories and City Manager Dave Kiff shared books about whales at Preschool
Storytime. Author Stuart Gibbs, who has written several popular middle-grade series, appeared on
April 12 where he read from his latest book, talked about writing, space and astronauts, fielded
several questions and then signed books and took the time to talk to his eager fans and pose for
pictures. There were additional special children’s programs at Central beyond NLW. On Saturday,
April 23 close to 300 hundred adults and children participated in a drop-in workshop presented by
Child Creative Lab and focused on STEM based science activities. Stations were set up in various
areas throughout the Children’s room. On Friday, April 29 in place of the regularly scheduled Songs
& Stories, Librarian Liz Aaron hosted a special bilingual Japanese/English storytime to celebrate
Children’s Day. Liz spent many years in Japan and delighted the audience of over 30 families with
stories and songs done in both languages. Everyone made a carp windsock (koi nobori) as a take
away for the day.
Teen Services
Nothing new to report this month. YAAC took April off and will meet again in May.
NATALIE BASMACIYAN, ADULT SERVICES COORDINATOR
New Library Assistants
Part Time Library Assistants Danielle Doi and Melinda Vogel began their new positions the first week
of April. They bring strong customer relations skills and spirit to serve the public. They are both
assigned to Central.
Scienceflix Database
Thanks to generous funding from the NBPL Foundation, the Library now offers access to the
Scienceflix database. Scieneceflix provides news, article, and videos to explore the world of science.
Thank you to Librarian Evelyn Rogers for recommending NBPL subscribe to this database.
