Cassidy, Human Resources Director 949/644 -3300 or tcassidy(a ) citv.newport- beach.ca.us SUBJECT: City Council Consideration of a Revised City Manager Job Description ISSUE: Does the City Council concur that the job description being proposed by the City Manager ad hoc Recruitment Committee reflects the duties of the Newport Beach City Manager's position? RECOMMENDATION: Review proposed job description and make any modifications necessary. Approve a job description to be utilized during the recruitment process for a new City Manager. DISCUSSION: Background: The City Manager is retiring on or about September 15' de ending upon the date a new City Manager is hired and reports to work. At the May 12h City Council meeting, Council authorized hiring the executive recruitment firm of Teri Black & Company to conduct the search. One of the important informational documents prospective applicants may want to review will be the job description for the position. This, along with the recruitment brochure, are important components to applicants gaining a better understanding of the community and of the Council's desire for its Chief Executive Officer and the goals it has for the organization. The City Charter contains some requirements that have been incorporated into the job description, but other general information offers a sense of the position's scope. The job description has not been reviewed by a City Council for the past 10 years and the City Manager ad hoc Committee felt it needed to be updated for this recruitment. City Council Consideration of a Revised City Manager Job Description May 26, 2009 Page 2 Teri Black will be working with the ad hoc Committee and the full City Council in developing more specific requirements for the nature of experience, background and specific skills necessary to be a successful City Manager in Newport Beach. That information will be contained in a City Manager recruitment brochure to assist potential candidates in determining their interest and whether they believe they are a good match for the position. It will also assist in advertising and making contact with candidates who may not be actively looking, but might become interested once they review the promotional literature. Attached are both the current job description and the proposed job description. The ad hoc Committee seeks Council discussion and consensus on the final wording of the job description so it can be utilized when the recruitment process begins in June. Environmental Review: The City Council's approval of this Agenda Item does not require environmental review. Public Notice: This agenda item has been noticed according to the Brown Act (72 hours in advance of the meeting at which the Council considers the item).
