Too bad the showdown had to come through the resignation of the committee. because much can come from drawing on the abun- dant talents in the community. I am certainly at odds with the Coundl majority-Norman MiUt>r, Braden Finch and Les Isbell - who said they would not act on the first four recommendations until the full report was submitted. Th<' committee had pJainly stated its poUcy on a number of occasions: They wanted the first four recom- m€.'ndations considered before oth- ers wt>re submitted. Otherwise sound. mont>y savtng Ideas couJd walt for years in face of tactics that can be viewed only as ob- sttuctionist. An Jdea Is good. bad or indifferent. and should be judged on those grounds-what's best for the comrnWlity-and not for political rtouoos or for {)f'r- sonal and private loyalties. This goes for the city employees a s weiJ as for the three-man Coun- d l majority-not that city em- ployees don't have a right (and duty) to attend the Coundl meet- inp: but since they are public servantl. a~r an. It just does not aJt well to have them pour on the preaure in thelr quiet way when their penonal interest mleht have to take a back seat to the-best interests of all of us taxpayers ... And It Is at.olutely unsporting and unethical for city employees to be engaged in sniping and mlde back-biting remarka against the new Councilmen. That's back-bit- Ing tM public too. bec:aUR It was tM public that voted in the new aJate. A word about the county tax collection propoal : The Realty Board is gathering lnformatlon on the .a-called "tax-couging" by the county (the unequally high per - ~ntage assessment on Newport Beach properties). The Relt1 ty Boerd hopes that this information will forc.. t.ht> county to equalize the assessments -- - and thPn there can bf' tlO objection to the Little Hoover proposal. Council has all the necessary facts to act on the other three propo.o;als at tht> next meetin~. but they might well walt for the assessment report tx>- fore acting on tax handling plan • • • A very pleasant lunch~n the other day with Pilot Harry Camp- bell of Corona d~l Mar. who pre- sented Brother-in-Jaw Ilce Arm- strong. from the Paul BWlyan state of Mlnl\80ta. athletic direc- tor of the University of Minnesota and looking very much Uke an athlete hlrnseU.
