tivitlea make• it perfectly clear
that the Chamber conducts a great
numbel' of services for the general
benefit of all of the citizens and
p r o p e r t y owners or Newport
Beech. in addition to the strictly
Olamber functions. There are the
fligh t of Snowbirds, rowing re·
gattu. flreworks, tourist infor·
maUon. recTl'ational booklets and
many others. . . . Perhaps the ~
lutlon is to segregate tht>Se ser-
vices, charge the dty a fee for
taking care of them (or drop them
altogether) and let Chamber dues
take care of the business of run·
n1ng a Chamber for the businesses
and professions of this area.

Ir Squadron members had been
s uffering from any flagging of in·
terest in their oourae of lnst~c
tion on nautical subje<:ts, they cer-
tainly got a shot in the arm in the
way of inspiration last Thursday
night at the dinner meeting at
Newport Harbor Yacht Club. They
listened to PoTter Sinclair describe
the preP3ration made for entering
the Flying Scotchman In last
year's Bermuda Race.
Members and guests, making up
a n audience of 125, listened · with
1·apt attention, while Mr. Sinclair
gave an amusing, intimate and
highly exciting description of all
Bermuda races. and that is con-
sidered one of' the toughest of all
blue water sailing races in any
year.
Mr. Sinclair told all the thmgs
you don't usually hear from re-
turned skippers, the tittle things
and the big things, the funny
thin~s and very serious things,
which go to make up a thrilling
expt'rience. He told the members
that detailed preparation is vi tal,
and urged Squadron members
never to discount the value of the
things they learn in their courses.

on her way back from the race,
the little 35-foot. light displace-
ment sail boat encountered a full
storm and did lose her rudder.

boat, hundreds of miles from shore
off the Atlantic Coast in a really
big storm with no rudder? It ac-
tually happened and preparation
paid off ..
The party will take place at the
American Legion Hall in Newport
with the theme an imaginary visit
to Zonta Clubs throughout the
world. A cruise around the bay,
turkey dinner and entertainment
are planned for the day. Mrs. Ruth i==============! Barcume, Corona del Mar. is gen-
eral chairman for the event. Mr. Sinclair pointed out that the

careful attention to dead reckon-
ing, in knowing the boat's position

given certificates and nine women
were recognized for passing the
s pring piloting course. We will
tell you more of this course. It Js
given twice annually by Balboa
Power Squadron. It is tree, open
to both men and women. in-
structed by volunteers, trained,
and selected from the membership
for their ability. The next course
begiJls Sept. 15 at Newport Harbor
Yacht Club at 7:30.
Curtis Dosh is chairman of fhe
course. Curt owns the 27-foot
Elco, the Buster, is an avid sport
fisherman, and gets hls fish too
lives on Balboa Island, is ~ctiv~
in the Angling Club. Curt had been
chairman of the Piloting course

t ransfusion of whole blood. The

funds for assisting hemophiliacs
are being raised by the sale of
