rest. You aren't even thinldn& any lonpr. 'You left a lot behind
when you at.artl!d up this slope behind our ''walk1ng" mortar barrages.
It .eema only a moment ago that you w~re crouching behind a
Uttl~ r1ae near the creat of the hill trying to catch your breath, wait-
lng for "the word."
Four times the company assaulted this hill. Did lt really take
only four aaaulta to capture it? Hill 749 la aecured... No use looking
back.
Down the line the word is pa.saed: "Dlg in apinst a possible
oounterattaclc." Entrenching tools cut into the hlllaide. You wonder :
"What would the goola want this place (or? Haven't tht>y had enough
yet!" But you dig your hole fast and deep.
1be outfit la five hours by trail from the supply point. The
U~utenant a.ala: "What do you want-water. ammo, or chow? Every-
ooe aerees: "Ammo up!"
Now the darkness deepens. Small talk ~bt. and stops. Shells
cllclc into their chambers and in the ominous quiet you can hear the
safety locka cllck oft.
No one says the enemy is creeping closer. No need to. Everyone
knows they are.
It is one a. m. when flares Ught up the horizon. A systematic
attack is on. First come the feelers. They inch up the slope t hrough
the shadows. Now they are here. Spasmodic rifle shots rip into your
lines. They seem to say: "Commit yourselves, Marines. W e're here

and in larger numbers than you.''
But not one flashing Marine rifle gives away our position.
Then the charge. Up the slope comes a wave of ~nemy. Gunners
.sit behind their sights. In a foxhole one Marine aims h1s rifle and an-
other pulls the pin out of a grenade. Flares fly up, a bugle sounds, and
you can see the shrieking ~nemy.
Tile hill is covered with the enemy like ants. Machine guns,
BARs, and grenades join in the chorus of resistance.
What follows are individual dramas. all different.
To one it is the wisp of machine gun fire across the front of his
hole. To another it is the cra.sh of enemy mortars.
To some it is the buddy who roams behind your foxhol~>. standing
up in the semi-darkness. shouting encouragt"ment and firing his
Brov.rning into the enemy surging toward you
But on Hill 749 it is a team or ~1arlnes that throws back the
enemy. :\ot once or twice, but fh·e times It is a team schooled ,
in disdpline and accuracy.
Individual dreams blend into an impersonal ptcture-the dt>fense 1
of the hill. In the blazing moment it was stand or die. Ypu were
trained to stand and stand you did. This story is so big that it can
only be remembered.
With the first gray light of. dawn you can survey the nignt's
results. It is easy to sweep the slope and valley with your eyes and
see that this hill was taken and held to good purpose.
Strewn down the grade and across the valley arc the enemy dead
who will never fight against you. your company, or your coun try
again.

A CHRISTMAS STORY
Like all young 'uns. I believed
ln Santa Claus. As an older kid.
like all older kids, 1 pooh-poohed
the idea. StiU older and some
wiser now, I'm dead sure I was
right at the first place. Tbe
Santa I believe In doesn't oome
just at Christmas. He may pop
up. unexpectedly, all year round
At Cirat you may not even recog-
nize him, for at such times, he
doesn't wear hls red suit or his
lon~ white beard. Let me prove
my point.
First time he carne around lut
year, it concerned an ocean view.
The vacant lot South of us had
bt-en just that for a long time. Its
very emptiness assured us the view
that sold us on our place. We
lo,·ed the e\'er-changing scene,
the jetty, the moody ocean, the
sunsl'ts over Catalina.
Suddenly, one day, the Jot was
sold. ThP ntsw owner was a
strangtsr. We felt pr e tty low
about our view. We even built
anothtsr little room on the ocean-
ward corner. Even with that, the pro~J)('cts Sf>l.'mcd pretty dim. Th(' I
new owner started building. We
just waited-and hoped.
When he built the oversized
brick chimney where our view
used to be, we just rubbed our
eyes and took another look . In-
stead of filling in aJI the space
out to the normal set-back, the
whole front or the house was set
at an angle. It was parallel to our
beloved view, not In front of lt.
It was hard to believe the stranger
had really buJlt It that way. Later.
when we cot to be dose friends,
we asked him about lt. He said.
"I planned It that way from the
beginning. I just knew you folb
loved that view.''
Now, and forever after, we can
sJt by our window and watch wt\lte
salla on a blue prairie, marvel at
the rainbow oolora that aome-
t:lmes come a t sundown, join in the
thrill of the ones from whose out-
riggers the marlin and albacore
flags 110 proudly fly. We'll always
be a ble to enjoy thls. even ln our
rocking-chair days. • • •
Santa Claus paid us another
visit. away back last Spring. I
had prom.iaed Mamma t h a t I'd
paint the stucco, once the fishing
season was over. At the end of
a couple of months or spare time,
I hadn't done so welL The old
faded green was flaked and my
paint wouldn't stay put. I got so
I hated paint.
One day, when the days were
~ettlng longer and the sun was
warmer on my back as I painted.
I got a phone call. It was an invi-
tation to go fishing on a beautiluJ
boat. With a muffled sniffle .I
saJd, "Sorry. No can do. Thanks
a million but I promised Mamma
I'd finish this paint job before
flahlng season. How's about a
rafn-chcc.k ?" I went back to my
painting, but I noticed that It was
hard to keep my eyes off the
ocean.

Due to the lack of adequate
auditorium facilities, the Christ·
mas programs at both the New-
port Beach and Corona del Mar
schools were confined to separate
rooms. However , this did not
pre\·ent the HoUday spirit from
filling the buildings with a cheer·
ful atmosphere in the days pre-
ceding the close of school.
In the Newport Beach school
each class held its own program
in the classroom. A thlrd grade
chorus consisting of 160 voices
caroled In the patio. In the fourth
· grades, the study ol Mexico was
culminated by a typical Mexican
holiday celebration and the break· ing of the Pinata. The klndergar·
tens of the school were visited
by Santa Claus.
