His economic talk revealed that his main ottock egoinst inflation was a plea to business ond labor to show restraint on price end wage increases. He might es well esk the tide to stay bod, because there ere other forces ot wort Ike should first re-read his campaign promises of 1952, ond then attack inflation ot tho root of the evil--the frightening spiral of government spending--ond stop the government meddling in the autotMtic U~foty velvos of supply ond demand. • • • • WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM? Here we go ego in on federal "aid" to schools. Ike is asking for more tha11 2 billion dollo~. "because the states are unable to meet tho need." How preposterous con he get! Does Ike think that Uncle Som hos some miraculous pitcher of money. which con pour out the dough when the financiol going gets tough down here among us tox-poying citi-zens? That money which l~o is so generously and big-heartedly wa11ting to give us must come, in tho fi~t place, from our own podotbooks It's our own money--end it costs a whole lot more to let Undo Sam be so lcind. It costs something more important than money: our right to look out after our own offain, including our own schools. Thoro con be only one valid explanation of the theory of federal ''aid"-pure Socialism, talcing from those who have. and giving to those who hove not. There can be only ono result-the end of enter· prise ond initiative of the individual, end who then will be left to be topped for the dough so that we all con got our hand-outs from Unde Som? • • • • e WHAT KIND Of "PE WIU YOU HAVE? Our City Council will soon be ecting on the unromantic problem of sewer pipes. so o few unemotionol facts ore in order. . There's a dispute over the required use of c;.,st iron pipe. The city does not allow private property owners to use the loss expensive vitrified day, although tho city 1tself can use tho cloy Hero are some facts: Cast iron pipe cosh about $2.75 tl foot. compared to $2 a foot for vitrified cloy. For the averoge house, requiring 30 feet of pipe, that san oddttional expense of some $22.50. Cast iron pipe will take about 5.500 pounds of pressure as against 1,100 pounds for vitrified cloy, and therefore con better stond foundation pressure tJnd earthqutJkes Vitrified cloy pipe is not flexi· ble. end therefore requires greater core in ltJytng end closer inspection by the city. Penetration by roots is one big problem with vitrified cloy. The roots cause eroding of pipes ond plugging of sower lines, thus re- quiring maintenance and repair. Tho city allows itself to use vitrified clay because the root penetration problem does not effect tho main lines laid down the middle of a street. Finally. all the digging I wes oblo to do did not unearth any nefarious scheme among plumbers to hoist an expensive item upon tho public so thtJt the plumbers could make e lot of money. Tho foct of tho moHer is that they could probably got richer if vitrified cloy wore allowed, because the cloy pipes couse more trouble end require more service. · The evidence is pretty conclusive that cast iron is less ••pensive in the long run. As en individual looking out efter my own best interests, I would hove to go olonq with cost iron pipe as against vitrified cloy So what do I think obout the city plumbing code? This moy be on unduly philosophicol condusion for e treatise on ~ewers . . . but my view is that one of OYr best privileqes is the right of choice. end the right of choice includes the right to moke the wrong decision, just so long os we do not injure the rights of others. The penalty of a wrong choice ond the rewards of the right decision are fer better controls thon all t+!o restricti~ lows that are ptopos.d "f« the good of tho people." Let the city code estoblidt e sensible stondord of 'tr.nqt+l end pressure for sewer pipe, ond let the indivi~ property own« t ... it from ther-e. Log of Harbor IWUWDAY, JAil.
