This week, on the eve of election, ct~me t~n attt~ck from 2 local newspt~pers, ct~refully plotted t~nd mt~liciously timed. T t~r<Jet of this last minute stt~b in tt,e bad Wtls Roy Mt~ypole of C orontl del Mar, candidt~te for the office of county supervisor. This t~ttt~ck, primt~rily from the ivory tower tit Bt~y t~nd Thurin in C osta Mestl, was liberally spiced witt, libelous cht~rges such as these: "perfidy" ... "frt~udulent propttgt~ndt~" ... "sht~bby, contemptible ct~mpt~ign ' ... "lies" ... "unscrupulous dist~rlion of facts." There were charges that tin awful lot of money WtiS being spent for the Mt~ypole campaign, and hints of sinister t ie·in with undesirable ele · ments. As a newspaperman constt~ntly aware of the consequence s o f ft~lse and dt~maqing stt~tements, I looked for the facts to bad up these charges. There were no focts, nothing but unscrupulous charocter as· sassination -if I moy borrow from their arsenal of vitriol. Such is the greot game of politics. The tactics worked. os they usut~lly do when there is no cht~nce for rebuttt~l. But this episode brings no honor to the Americt~n spirit of ft~ir plt~y. or to the journt~lis tic obligation for pttinstt~king, unbiased news coverage.
