But there's an election next week too on Tu~ay. and it's a whole lot more important. al!hough there's not much noise about it. This election is for school board members. Un- fo rtunately, there is no contest for the elementary school and Coast College trustee positions. and right there is evidence of the general lack of interest in this all-important business of supervising our schools. I would like to see some competition for the seats, because that would generate some addi- tional interest among our voters and taxpayers. One measure of the 1mportance of school board elections is just plain cold cash. School boards spend many more tax dollars than do city councils. But even more Important than the cash is the fact that our schools are the greatest factors in shaping the thinkmg of our future c1tizens and voters. I believe that our schools deserve much of the blame for the gradual deterioration of self-reliance, fo r the increas- ing dependence upon the government. and for the dimmishing appreciation of the private ertterprise system. ---· ----------------- ~UNG , ~iiSfi~~~~~ .BY~~~ Hospital We Is Proclaimed •coo auc.r (Continufld Jut _.)
