I'm thinking ol Dr. William Powell, a aJlehtJy built, sweet·
faced little Neero minister In a nearby city up the coast. ·He heads
an oreanlzatlon national In scope, designed fo organize Neeroea
against Communism.
Every few weeks Dr. Powell attenda City Council, and when
those 5 minute portions of the City Fathers' time are dealt out to
the voting public, he frequently takes hla place at the microphone to make a little speech.
His choice or wori:b Is ama.zlne, hla spiritual Insight wonderful,
ancJ his enthusiasm unquestioned. Once he sang a verse or two
of a Negro spiritual. and he always ends by calling upon the City
Council to keep right on fighting commUNison.
"Us blacks and white has got to get together to fight the pinks
<And the reds,'' ht-says. "and I'm here to tell you we got to keep
't>m on the run. Ain't no place for them here." ·.
Last Tuesday was a proud day In the life of Dr. Powell. He
came to the City Council to tell them It was his 74th birthday, and
that he had bought a pjece or property In the city where he was
going to Jive and be a taxpayer. He was Interrupted In the middle

Other councilmen sat. eyes half closed, dozing. A couple were

It's strange at what a premium time <'an have upon it when the
publl<', white or black. 'wants an extra minute to talk to the men it
put into office, and ho"Y chearp It Is when they, themselves, a re
conduC'tlng city business.

ever a councilman has a birthday there's a big birthday cake too.
It only takes a half hour from a trying day, and as we figure
things these days It comes URder the heading of necessity.
I said to the mayor, "It's Dr. Powell's birthday .. Why not ask
him to come In and have a cup of collee and some cake!" His
Honor's glance was answer enough. He smiled weakly. and pre-
ceded me Into his chambers.
I've heard a lot of talk about Integration there in City Hall.

I picked up a little cake. poured a cup of coLtee' and took it
to the little Negro waltjng In the foyer.
"Happy birthday, Dr. Powell." I said.
