MR. BROWN? Do you remember Atty. Gen. Stanley Mosk's re- marks about "little old ladies in tennis shoes" and his other sophomoric observations about the John Birch Society? After Mr. Mosk had made his report to Governor Pat Brown, I sent a letter to the governor asking if he endorsed the report or would he publicly reprimand his attorney general for making statements that were irresponsible, false and defamatory . The first reply came from Mr. Mosk himself, and he sent along the full text of his report, which was even more fantastic than the newspaper accounts revealed it to be. Then came this letter from Governor Brown: Dear Mr. H .. pa: The report of Attorney General Mosl! has discussed in detail tfte nature of ttle John Birch Society. I do not believe th.t ~ny Americen, conscious of the free- dom our citizena enjoy under the Constitution, cen rightly consider any organiution pe+riotic: whow avowed objects are to remove ttlow righ~ of l!berty and justice for which 50 many Americans have given their lives in ttle past. Sincerely, EDMUND G . BROWN, Governor And thus they rest their case-the a ttorney gen- eral of our state. and 'a former a ttorney general. our governor, both of whom should have a sound knowl- edge of the laws of evidence m condemning any individual or organization. They both failed to comment further or to pro- d uce evidence to back up the following false state- ments in Mr. Mosk's report: That the John Birch So- oety members defirie communism to include any ideas differing from their own; that they are willing to give up a large measure of the freedoms guaran- teed them by the U.S. Conshtution in favor of accept- ing the dictates of their "founder". Robert Welch; that they seek, by fair means or foul. to fo rce the rest of us to follow their example; that the John Birch Society is totalitarian, that no dissent is permitted in 1ts ranks; that Robert Welch brooks no dissenllon or d!scussion; that Mr. Welch and Birch Society mem- bers charge treason to Americans who believe in such things as fluoridation, mental health prog rams. Jhe United Nations or federal aid to education. Those a ccusations are quoted from Mr. Mosk's report, and are totall y irresponsible. false and de- fa matory. Mr. Mosk, himself. admtts the phoney nature of h1s ''investigation" when he writes in his reir· t that he must "hasten to add" that he is just rna ing "personal observations." Governor Brown adds another a ccusation off tht:? top of his head. without any a ttempt to provide proof: that the avowed objects of the John B1rch So- ciety a re to remove the rights of hberty a nd justice enjcyed u nder the Constitution. This is just as false as the charges made by Mr. Mosk. My question to Governor Brown is the same as before: Does he endorse Mr. Mosk's report, or will he publicly reprimand his attorney general for mak- ing unfounded accusations not in keeping with high public trust of an office holder?
