That's the way I feel about a textbook. It may be qq per cent sound, but that one per cent of rot Is enough to spoil the boolc. An example is ''News In Print," the textbook now being considered for adoption for j ournalism classes In the Newport Beach Elementary School District. As a reporter, and copy- desk man, and editor, and former journalism Instructor, I found the book to have a great deal of professional excel- lence in its chapters on news gathering, writing and edi ting, also on the business problems of pu blishing a newspaper. There is also a chapter on propaganda, which the authors descrIbe as an accumulation of facts to sell a point of view. There is more to the definition of propaganda than that, and the textbook itself is an example of the more subtJe nature of that arl Ttli s propaganda is very sll~t In quantity; It consists of skilful suggestion of the liberal point of view, in an offhand manner that makes i t appear almost accidental. It takes a lot of thought to do that. Talce a look at the flyleaf pages-the two facing pages with the tltleand publication Information. The background is made up of newspaper col umns. Curiosity is bound to get the student to examine the columns, and he wi II read the following analysis of Kennedy cabinet members: "They be- long neither to right nor left. They are not doctrinaire. They wear no bl inkers. They accept no limitations, except the li- mitations that the hard facts impose. Their si mple, highly pragmatic aim is to deal with the hard facts in whatever way will be most likely to safeguard and promote the great Intere sts of the Uni ted States." Whoever is the author of that gem is discussing Secretary of State Dean Rusk, Secretary of Defense Ro bert McNamara and Secretary of Treasurer Douglas Di lion. Is it just happen- stance that this eulogy of leaders of the ultra-liberal New Frontier was selected? Two more ultra-liberal points of view were cleverly in- sinuated in an apparently routine list of suggested assign- ments at the end of the chapter on "The Editorial." Assignment No. 3 states: "Di scuss the United Nations as a force for peace ..... " Assignment No . 8 states: "Write an editorial designed to sell one of the following ideas .... " and there follows a a number of typical school topics-new uniforms for the band, revised study hall regu l ations, support of the United Fund dri ve, athletic de-emphasis-and, at the very end, this one: "Federal Aid to EducatiOfl." I s it just by chance that th1s particular slant on these controversial topics was i ncluded in th is textbook? If the I aws of ch.ance were really permt tted to operate, why not an assignment to ed1torial1ze on the top•c: "Our·nation was not intended to be a democ racy; i t is a REPUBLIC; let's keep it that way'" Echoes of Senator Kennedy It W8JI a great American and a great Senator who once 11ald. " All lrue Americans should urse the utilization of every means available to inform, on a non-partiaan baais, our aervicemen, in particular, and our Pf!ople throughout the country in seneral of the inaidioua and very real C ommuniat threat to our country. To do this we need a spirit as well as a pro gram; we need the leadership at the top of our political system to encourage patrioti~ and self-sacrificing efforts by our people in every walk of life; we need leas of the "red pencil" of our cenaors and more of the spirit of our forefathers whose courage and intrepidity made this nation possible. From the rank of Captain of Infantry through that of Lieutenant General commanding an army corps of more than 100,000 troups, I have been in many difficult battle spots. My "shield and buckler" has always been encom- passed by the thoughts : "This is my Co\Dltry!" "This is for those who would act as I am acting if they wer e here!" God fo rbid that the time shall ever come when the American fighter should think, when the chips are down: "Why should I risk my life for tho se who would rather be 'Red than dead'." lf this be labeled "super -patriotism" by the apologists for America, let them make the most of it! The chips are down and this is a struggle for survival. Our age-old concept of life and liberty demands that no one dare to apologize for our beliefs o r t o excuse the foreign aims of tyrants who would deprive us of both life and hberty.
