PRETTY MUCH ALIVE H .. bor Area citizens had the opportunity of taking a look at Congressman Edgar Hlesund last weelt, and Congressman John Rousselot Is expected to be here this week-end. Mr. Hiestand was well received, and I am sute Mr. Rousselot will be too. They are not monsters, after all, even though both are unas~med members of the John Birch Society. They're about to become ex-congressmen, as you prob- ably know . '3oth of these California congressmen were defeated In the November election, and there was great rejoicing among the anti-anti-communists at such osten- sible repudiation of the John Birch Society. The fact of the matter is that they both scoted an im- pressive moral victory, and they would have been pol l- tical winners too If it had not been fot a vicious gerry- mandering pf congressional districts. Just look at the record: ~fter the Democrats got through with their redrafting of district boundaries, Mr. Hiestand found himself In a dis- trict with 104,407 Democrats and only &5,045 qepubll- cans. Against such formidable odds, he received 47.1q" of the votes to 52.51 ~ for his successful opponent. Mr . qousselot's new district had 98,708 Democrats and 55,q54 ~eoubllcans. Yet he re<:eived 46.18~ of the votes, compared to 53.82~ for his opponent. Another John Birch member, Ri II Richardson, newcomer in politics, ran in a district which had llb,SOO l)emo- crats and 62,529 Republicans . He too lost, but he re- ceived 44 .22~ of the votes compared to 58.78" for his opponent. It appears that the news of the political demise of the John Birch Society was highly exaggerated. • • • • LEARNING FROM NATURE ~n unscheduled lesson on nature was given at Mon- day's meeting of the directors of the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce. It came about a.s director Bill Spurgeon reported on a ca II he had received from Joe Edgington, principal at ~braham Lincoln School, for help in identifying some nocturnal footprints on the school grounds . The footprints had been made by Salifornia mountain lions, wh ich may sound somewhat terrifying to some , but Bill Spurgeon gave assurance that these "cats" do not bother people, but live almost exclusive ly on deer. They prey on the weaker deer, and thus actually improve the deer population by eliminating the weak ones. This observation led to a discussion of the balance in nature -for example, hawks keeping down the rodent menace, and the California :<ing snake protecting us from rattlesnakes. In fact, says 13ill, the King snake Is one of our best friends because of its immun ity to the bite of the rattler and its ability to get rid of rattlesnakes. This is of particular concern 1n areas such as the inland side of of Corona del Mar, next to the Irvine ranch lands, where rattlers are often found not far from our homes. Keep those King snakes around, they're fine "watchdogs." ALII08'I'-11 ... ~ boklen...., ~ .. ~ ...,,?)? ••< , ... ~ tJoe. ............... a. or ... ,._, ._. fill our .-.s aftldala ..... ._.. Yea, it may , be in• wavering health after some shadowy set- backs, but: We've retrenched ourselves, our American pride, our tradition and our self-respect. We've retained the faith of the world with Mr. "Quack" Castro put in his unenviable place and the Red nuclear menace removed, we hope, from Cuba. Santa Claus will hold his proud head high when he visits our prosperous peace- loving communities this Yuletide. The birth of the Saviour who beseeched us all to "love one another," will be com- memorated at Christmas tide in America in a bo~d of common brotherhood - man's love for man. Once again the kindly spirit imparted at this season will prevail -"Peace on Earth and Good Will to all men." The sentiment, regretfully, is of short shrift with too many souls today. It should be practiced EVERY DAY IN THE YEAR. Until mankind all over the world be- comes endowed with the sacred under- standing of these admonishments by our . G Redeemer, the fate of our world must hang on futile blandishments. What might happen if all world peoples and all world leaders and statesmen should ioin in a pact to live for a time-testing year by the Golden Rule - "Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you."? Perhaps a miracle might be achieved! Greater power lies behind those words than all the nuclear warheads and other weapons all over the world. All of the great faiths, Christian, Jewish and others enioying the privilege of relig- ious liberty in America should ioin in a vast outpouring of mass prayers for world peace at Christmas time. Surely such examples would have in. fluence. Our homes and firesides will ring with gaiety and m~rtirt'~nt on Christmas day: our festive boards will be abundant; Yule trees will glow with shining tinsel, gifts and bright fights. Let's keep CHRIST in CHRISTMAS! Let us not overtook the spiritual signif- icance of Christmas Day. But, let us indulge in a prayer of.thanksgiving for all our bless- ings of freedom, liberty, prosperity, per-· sonal privacy and comfort that we enio~ in America. And let us remember that we have been spared the scourge of oppression that has darkened many other areas of the world: that the very gifts we enioy at this season are abundant in our American marts be- cause of our principles of free enterprise. And do not forget the faith of the little children "who shall lead them" -the pu- rity, innocence, simplicity and utter conft- dence of a child is superlative. We cite, for example, the incident of a Christmas card transmitted via the U.S. Mail on a Christmas season a few yean ago. It was addressed to "My Daddy in Heaven." Inside the envelope was the· Christmas card with a glowing message signed "Wrth All My Love, from Dickey.''. This is the kini of faith the world needs today. We at the Hardware Store w•nt to say here we are grateful and truly apprecia- tive of the finest a~gation of custom- ers we've ever known.
