U,ERTS IN CONFUSION The highway striping and left tum lanes in Corona del Mar are a typical ex~ple of outside "experts" ttying to solve local problems. They have the uncanny knack of disregarding local needs, and the unusual good fortune (for themselves) of not having to suffer the consequences of their own mis- takes. Corona del Mar resident Paul Holder has pointed out a coup I e of the choice biOQpers -the hazardous down hi 11 location of the crosswalk below Port Theatre, and the blocking of Hazel Dr., requiring an'"around Robin· Hood's bam" maneuver to enter that one-way street. There are others: such as blocking the important left turn to Port Theatre parking, blocking the left tum to the new Masters bu ilding at Larkspu r Ave., and the left tum to the Ham- mond Organ Studios at He I iotrope Ave. Best solution: Re-route that freeway monstcosity 'way out of town, inland of the Back Bay,where it belongs, and let us handle our Coast Hwy. as .a local thoroughfare: • • • SEND HIM IACX TO HIS M!WSPA,ER I am fully in accord with my fellow AmerianLegion- nai res in calling for the resignation of fellow publisher Thomas Braden as president of the State Board of Education. He can go back to publishing his newspaper. There he can do as he pleases -including an all~t editorial campaign in favor of the "Dictionary of American Slang," which he so stoutly defended In his official position on the board. Indeed, he can reprint the entire Dictionary In his newspaper, including all its shocking obscenities. In his capacity as publisher, he is on his own , and he cannot require me to support him and his extremist, ultra- liberal policies. In his capacity as president of the Board of Ec*Jcatlon, he Is· using a position of public ttust as a platform for his type of Indoctrination, and he is requiring me, as a taxpayer, to ~id in that indoctrination. The American Legion, Department of California, has expressed Its opinion of Mr. Braden in an editorial in the November Issue of the official publication of the Califor- nia Legion. The editorial points to a statement by Mr. Braden in an article in a national magazine last month, in wttidl he said he was "opposed to indoctrination in ou r schools - any indoctrination -including indoctrination in patriot- ism." Pointing out that Webster's di ctionary defines "indoc- trination" a.s "t eachinq," the editorial said, in part: "We are shock ed that he is opposed to the indoctrina- tion -the teaching -of Patriotism. "Proper e<l.tcatlon of our youth has always been ooe of the major programs of The Legion. We feel very definitely and strongly that the youth of the nation must be ·•in- doctrinated' or taught Patriotism and what it means. "We do not feel there is any place in our educational system for any person who is opposed to the teaching of Patriotism. "In view of Mr. Braden 's statement, we feel that he should resign from the State Board of Education. "If he does not resign, we feel that Governor Brown should request his resignation. "If he refuses to resign, w~ believe that the Governor should remove him from office. "If the Governor refuses to do this, we believe the next session of the Legislature should investigate this most serious matter, effecting the teaching of hundreds of children, the citizens of tomorrow. "This State and this Nation cannot afford NOT to have Its children taught the real meaning of ~atriotlsm." utCN froupe prwtett.., Cll tlW liSA Ce tM u•l'IWD IIOIU.D r~DaA£1Sf'S (1J2J -J4tlt 8treet •• fl. ~ltfllftOA ,; D.C.)
