I. ............................. . .LL TIE IUL Eni•IT PLEASE SOIU ! The Scranton performance before and during the Repub- lican convention has been of great value in exposing the so-called "king makers." Though calling themselves Republicans, they are so bitterl y opposed to the conse,.. vatlve, patriotic, American program of Senawr Barry Gol~ water that they are willing to scuttle the GOP chances In November In their desperate attack on "Mr. ConservatJ ve." They are exoosing themselves as the promoters of the "Me Too" policy, which is nothing but the Roosevelt- Truman-Kennedy'-'ohnson New Deal, New Frontier welfare state policy. Gov. Scranton has gone all the way in embracing the ultra-liberal viewpo int on issues of the day. In a single speech, on his arrl val at the con vention, he o ffer~d his extremist views on such topics as federal medicare, anti- poverty program, urban renewal, farm subsidies, subsidi zed housing, social securi ty, full employment, and anti-anti- communism. I must admit to one area of agreement: that the real ex- tremists should be invited out of the Republican Party. I am not referring to patriotic Americans who recognize the growing communist threat and the dangers inherent in the growth of a po werfu l federal government. I mean the guys who make wild, intemperate. unfounded charges such as are contained in the infamous Scranton letter of last Sun- Clay. The Republican Party can do well without them. • • • ''IUIT IE .LYED II THE HEART'' It is disturbing to note that so many ministers and high church I eaders are supporting the Rumford Housing Act and opposing the initiative that seeks to reoeal it. Ministers should be leading the efforts of dedicated Christians to solve this problem in the only manner that it can be truly sol ved-in the hearts of men. All true be- lievers should be united in their determination to keep the force of government out of the field of human relations. Or. W.S. McBirni e, the "Voice of Americani sm:' says, "We should all work for better opportunities for raci al minor~ties. This i s Christian. '3ut we should not forfeit our God gi ven natural r~ghts tn the proc ess." Senator Gol dwater, speaking about a related topic. the recently adopted "ctvil nghts" bill, put tt this wa1: "1 don't think this is a problem that is ever gotng to be com- nletefy sol ved by law. It's gotng to be sol ved 1n the heart. ~o one should violate the right s of some to protect the rights 'lf others." The purpose of th e inittative is to outlaw forced hous- tng, to re sto re the princtol e of the freedom of choice, which includes the rtght to choose friend s. neighbors, associates, buyers and sellers, tenants and I andlords - without the threat of compulsion by governmenL Of course it is true that freedom of choice can lead to wrong and harmful deetsions. But this does not mean that it is the freedom that 1s at fau lt. It ts the s1n ful heart of man that mu st be ch cYtged, and that 1s the mtssion of the minister. lt is untenable argument to say that Christians must sup.. port the Rumford Act because God has no segregationist atti tude in His love for His children. This is a bold state- ment of the philosophy that the ends justify the means. t he Lord says pi ainly that good fruit cannot come from a corrupt tree. Nowhere does He' teach the use of force to change the hearts of men. There i s no call for the fearful power of governmental force in the Great Commandment to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself. Force cannot generate love; it can bring only hate. And that Is the evil fruit that i s being now brought forth. Instead of "first casting out the beam out of thine own eye," the cry is heard to"pass a law to correct the evil." Personal obligation to exercise compassion, charity and love is being weakened by turning the responsibility over to the government. Individual freedom is thus being lost, little by little. The Rumford Act is just one of the many alluring decoys seeking to lead us from the path of Christ- ian love , and freedom. ***** MOIALm THIOU.H NIIDOM ._.. THE DREAM THAT BECAME A NIGHTMARE The coocrm of the Amerian peoplr over the United Nations is beginning to reach large proportions. This concern is symbo- lized in a MW book by fo~r State ~part· ment official, Bryton Barron. Enridtd "Du11m &comn A NightmtJr~", Barron's book leaves no doubt about his feeling that the U.S. should withdraw from tht> UN. ( Published by Crestwood Books, Box 30 t , Springfield, Virginia; $250.) The author confines his own opinions to a running commentary that ties togetht'r voluminous quotations from public figures. He quotes everyone from lJ Thant to lettt'r- writers in local Mwspapen. AUTHORITATIVE Barron's IC.holarly work coven the whole range of UN activiues -from interventiOn in our domestic economic affairs to L':'l/ war-making in the Congo to CN control of our for!'ign policy. Ht> points out tlut thf' srna.ll nations of the L':"l -hostile to the t: .S. -al~y form a VOUI\Jt rrulJOnh of the General Assembly. He exa~mnes the maJor role that Alger Hiss played m the fonnation of the ~orld organi..r.ation, and point.s out that the Com- mumst.s have made good ux of the L·~ ever since.
