The words that fol lowed also brought shouts of apPf()val : "Moderation in pursuit of justice Is no virtue." It did not take long for the chorus of criticism, protest and (Jiestlonlng to arise from the anti-Gol dwater forces. It came from both parties, but especially from the left flank of the Republican Party. There is no confusion in the minds of conservatives as to the meaning of Senator Goldwater's s tatement. Conserva- tives, who base their opinions on solid principles of lasting truth, understand the meaning of words of principle. "Defense of li berty" is its own definition. Such action must be moral and just and proper, or it is not defense of liberty at all , but instead an act of tyranny. How could you defend freedom with methods that destroy freedom? How could you promote justice by methods that are unjust? Therefore It is plain to conservatives that there can be no such thing as too much extremism in defense of li berty, or in the pursuit of j ustice. For there can be no such thing as too much truth, morality, honor and justice. • • • TH£ 'EMATOII OM CIVIL RIGHTt He re is a senatorial comment on a bill in Congress cal ling for creation of a Fair Employment Practices Commission: "This, to me, is the least meritorious proposal in the whole civil rights program. To my way of thinking, it is this simple: If the federal government can by law tell me whom I shall employ, it can likewise tell my pro spec tive employees for whom they must work. If the law can compel me to employ a Negro, it can compel that Negro to worlc for me ••• As I s ee it , such a I aw would do nothing more than enslave a minority. "Such a law· would necessitate a system of federal police officers such a s we have never before seen." Are these the words of Senator Barry Goldwater, "depart- ing from the mainstream of the Republican Party"?? No, these are comme11ts by Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, in a S enate speech on Ma rch q, 1 Q4q. • • • EnAIUSMIMG ' PAGAM RELIGIOM! Jean Sumrall and Nell Segraves, fatthful workers for the Lord, have written thoughHlrovoking comments on religion in pub- lic schools in a recent publication of the Episcopalians fo r Chr ist: "Has Congress become a sounding board for the establish- ment of tax supported evolutionary atheistic religion in pub- lic schools? ••. The unbelievers are winning wi th a strong negative argument consisting of the plight of the atheist child who needs protection from offen s es to his 'religious' beliefs. It is about time we Christians s tart defending our children from the much mo re serious offenses to our Christ- ian beliefs that the total pres ent-day schoo I curriculum in- cludes. The curriculum is STATE prescribed, NOT volun- tary as in the case of prayer and Bible reading •.•• "We wi sh to challenge the right of unbelievers to force upon us their idea that God does not exist in certain public places. Since He does exist, thei r insistence that we may not aclcnowl edge this fact is actually extreme I y prejudiced and paranoid. Allowing a person to acknowledge the exis- tence of God ts hardly an establishment of religion. but tell- ing him he may not is a violation of all of the First Amend-- ment, including a denial of freedom of spee<:h, press, assem- bly, AND worship. "In other words, we are witnessing the paradox that In the name of religious li berty fo r unbelievers, believers are being prohibi ted from exercising not only their religious beliefs, but also their freedom of speech, press, and assem- bly in public places."
