The issue in each case is the same: The altemative to priv, ate ownership is government ownership, and whosoever is the owner sets the rules and regulations for use of the property. ll:IER GIVEN thai the said publi c hearing wi ll be held oo the 13th day of November, 1967, at the hour of 7:30p.m. ia the Coun cil Chamben. o! the Ci ty Hall of th e City of Newporl Be ac:h, Californ ia, at wh ich time aod piece any and all persons iolerealed may appear aod be heard lhereoo. There is, of course, the classical retort: Just what rights have you ever lost? I can retort in retum that in the almost 20 years that 1 have been publishing a newspaper in Newport Beach, I have felt the pincers of governmental control steadily closing in on my right to operate a business. Monday evening the jaws of the pincers closed in a little mo re with ttte approval of Emergency Ordino¥Jce 1235 by the Newport Beach Ci ty Council. The ordinance drastically changes the rules for use and development ot property by impos\ng stringent off·street partcing controls where such controls had not exist ed before. The ru les that were in effect when the property was purchased have been changed. In some cases it could mean drastic loss to a property owner. In some cases it could mean failure of a business. The new controls apply to new con struction and re- building on a business lo t. This includes rebuilding after destruction by fi re o r earthquake or other catastrophe. In such a case the property owner can no longer restore th e property th a t he had at the time of purchase. The parking control s drastically reduce the si ze of building that can becons tructed,and_thus sharply reduce the rental income. Rebuilding could be economicall y unfeasible. There is s till time to stave off the harm that this ordi- n.:rlce can cause. It can be amended to guarantee the property o wner the right to maintain what he now has, which would include the right to rebuild to existing size in case o f ca tastrophe. • • • SCUTTLEBUTT OM PIN STICKING Scuttlebutt from last week's "Scuttlebutt," the news· I etter of the N ew~rt Harbor·Costa Mesa Board of Real· tors: "We noted En sign editor Arvo Haapa photographing the Sand Castle contes t entry of a rival newspaper, New· port HarbO r Hi gh School's Beacon. It waa during thia period tbat Egyptiaa goverament aod literatur reached brilliant excellence; architecture throve, and the great obelislr.a like tile Waabiagtoa Monument Wl!re erected; Esrptiaa commerce apread from ladia to Spi1in u.aing a canal almost parallel to the modern Suez. conaecting the Nile, the Red Sea and the :\leditefl'anean; and military power reached a pealr. of glory uader Thutmoae Ill, often called the Napoleon of Egypt, who won a spectacular battle at Megiddo that rivals Thermopylae for a abow of aheer Reniua. Moaea w .. bom in the dawn of Tbutmoaid power. Scripture does not re cord the nameS of any of the Pharaohs, oor of Moeea' mother aod father. In Exodua 6 .20 and NIIIDbera 26'.59 where .Amram 8Dd Jochabed are said to have begotten Moses aod Aaron an'd Miriam it is dear th..t theae are the family ancestors but not the immediate 'parents since they are coalemp«ary with Levi, oae of Jacob's 12 aou, who were in Egypt some 450 yeare before the E.xod ua. However, there ia one remarkable woman known to biatory as "Pharaoh's Daughter," Ha~hepaut , and abe may well be the one of our story. The grown·up prioceaaea of the royal house hold in Egypt all bad their speCial palaces, with prdena and baths attached. Inheritance waa through the mother, and the princesaes enjoyed special privilege which readily accounts for the way tbia OM manased to diaregard her father's decree about drowning the Hebrew boy babiu. But, Hatahepsut was more than aa Of'dinary Egyptian princess. She ruled Egypt as Pharaoh's daughter, waa co-regent with Thutmoae Ill, who waa either her nephew or her brother, but in either case her husband, until her death. Her huabaad waa but a prince consort until he succeeded her. It would be altopther in. character for such a strong peraonality to have been quick to aee the advantage of raising a leader of the Hebrew people in her owe house- hold instead of try ins to c urb their power by the drastic meuures of her father aad pndfat.her. Hatahepaut more than a at i a I i e a the Biblical picture of Pharaoh's daughter who took \1osea from the pitc h·covered basket set adrift in her fami.liar bathiog place on the Nile, and raised him as her own aon. Moeea himeelf apPeared at birth a11 a "goodly child".lt has been suggested that bia fa ce already shone with aomething of the slory tha t appeared later in hii life when he rnet with God. At least he atrwc:k everyone coacerned aa being ....,.. U..a an oN\Q..,. baby. Uaace lh apeci.al met\oda to aave him. Hia being "bidden" for the first three months of his life prefigures the flight of J oseph aad Mary and Jesus into Egypt to escape the fury of Herod who also ord ered the a laughter of boy babies of Bethlehem. The kings of the earth a e e k to deatroy the son of the \Voman born to redeem mankind as soon as he is born, but be iM whisked away and hidden (see Rev. 12.1 -6). Parents today who think they cao make their children strong by exposing them early to the tunno il of the wickedneu of the world should pause to consider that God keepa his atrongeat servants bi dden and protected in their tender yean~. ~oaea ' preservation by means of the ark of bulrushes recalls the F lood and Noah's preservation which prefigures Christ and Hia Chur ch in wh om we are kept secure amid the raSing waters of the world . Mosea' educatioo ia c overed in a sentence: lie became the son of Pharaoh's daughter. Considering the age in which be grew up, this tells ua Moaea bad the finest training a boy could have. He was tutored not only by the great minds of his day, but the great minds ia hia day ranked with the greatest in hiatory. There ia a traditi on that h.e even aerved for a time in c::om mand of Ha~hepaut's armiea in the south -alto~ther a likely aaaignment for a lad of 17 or 18 raised aa a prince royal. His post-graduate work was taken, however, in 1he desert under his father·in-law, Reuel, a priest of the God of :\braham in Mid ian , whither Mosea fled to escape punishment for murder of the Egyptian overseer. The c ircumstances of Moses' fl ight are dramatic. Moaea thwarted the clever plana of his foater mother; ·instead of serving in the government as an effective so·between with the Hebrew people, be left her service aad made a bid for independent leadership. The HeMews were wary, however. The line, "Who made thee a judge or a divider over us ?" comes to mind in the words of Jesus who .. id, "Man, who made me a judge or a divider over yo u?" Moses at firat tried to make himaelf head of the people. He had to learn to wait until God aent bim. J eaua never made this false move . SL Tllo""" Prwo -P. 0 . THE , MANNER OF HIS COMING • By R. W. Fnmcla ~ wu..-l f.o,. JEWISH HOPI, .... 707, L•• ....... I•• It wu the day of our Lord's Ascension. Jesus and His band of eleven disciples had come to Bethany, the place they all knew and loved so well. Some of their happiest momenta had been apent there, and for Jesus personally the place held cherished memories. There He had often rested in the hou~~e of Mary, Martha and Luarus. There He had staged Hia trium· pha1 entry into )eruaalem on the qne, Palm Sunday, and there, a few d~ys later and near that same spot, He had faced the agony of Gethsernane. And now the climu of His earthly ministry was approaching. He was about to return in glory to His Father's side, and once again it ia to Bethany He cornea. Having reached the brow of Olivet, the Saviour stands in the midst of the little s roup of His disciplea., and lifting up His bands, He pronounced Hia blessing upon {hem. Then, even u He apoke the words of love, He was taken up from them into heaven and a cloud received Him out of their sight. During Hia lifetime on earth, Jesus had often told His disciples in the plainest posaible terms that when He went away He would cume back again. Many of His parables had had this theme aa their principal element, and as He drew near to the Crosa, His references to it became more n\Jmeroua and more de. tailed. How man y Christians have been strengthened and comforted by the word11, "Let not your heart be troubled : ye believe in Cod, believe also in me. In my Father's hou~~e U! many mansion•: if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go anCI prepare a place for you, I will come again and r~ve you unto my~elf; that where I am, there ye may be also." Yes, Jesus had often promiaed that He would come again, and now, as Hia bodily preaence was aboul to be removed, two heavenly meaaengen appeared to reauure ua with one of the moat slorious atatemenll in the Word of God concerning His aecond ad· vent. Hia feet aball lland on Mt. Olivet and He ahall be king over aU the earth. The Apostle Paul gives ua a detailed and amazing description of our Lord'a retul,Jl for Hia people. It ia natural that He ahoWd come 6n1 for His own. When a country makea war on another country, ita firat act ia to withdraw ita ambuaador, and Scripture leiJ us we are the ambauadors of Chriat. Before the judg· mentA of God fall upon the earth, we shall be taken away. Here ia the aoene vividly de· ecribed: "The Lord Himaelf ahall deteend from heaven with a about, with the •oice of the archangel and with the ltu.mp of God and the dead in Christ ahall riae fint. then we which are alive and remain aha.U be causht up together with them in the doud., 10 shall we ever be with the Lord." Thia srut event haa not yet happened, but it will surely come. I wonder if you are amoq those who are "in Chriat" and who are watching and waiting and ready to meet the Lord in the air.
