Romans 8 is a glorious chapter. The Spirit is mentioned 19 times, in great contrast to Romans 7, which is bur~d with the flesh and sin and death; as, "With the mind I myself serv~ the law of God ; but with tlw: fksh the law o£ sin." A carnal man is w~tch~. but tht law o f the Spirit of life makr-s Christians frte fron1 the Ia~· of sin and duth. For this, we thank God through Jesus Christ. In I CoTjn· thia.t~ 1:?:1-13. the Spirit is mentiont"d ten times. and.' therefore, it is full of good gi h ~ and good chr-er . Paur~ body wa.~ rhained to a soldier, but h1: saKI that his soul was sealed to Christ with the Holy Spirit. and liO he knew of the: great glory which should come with the redemption o f his boody (Eph. I :IJ, 14), when his spirit, soul, and body would all be free and "resurrected and reunited, compkte in Christ ( 1 Thess. 5,16-23) Tht: Holy SpiTit, through Jesus Christ, is tht: Advocate, Intercessor, Comfortt:r, Guide, Teacht:r, Hel~r. and Energizt:T of all bdieven who have been born into dod·s spiritual kingdom. We can have all t~ power. joy, •couragt, and ft:llow- ship now while wr are in the fl.t:sh, if wt: let Him havt: H is way with us. If you want to know real, satisfying joy and its cause, read Paul's prayt:r in jail for his f rimds and see the .power of tht: Spirit over the fl.~h {Eph. 3 :14-21 ). The .st:venfold Spirit of God giVes us the sevenfold unitit:s (Eph. 4 ;3-6) -ont: body, ont: Spirit, one hope, ont Lon:!, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of a~l, who is abovt: all, and through all, THE FEEDING OF THE 5000 is the only one of Jesus' miracles told in all four Gos- pels,\41. 14:B,l3,14k. 6:1?,5?, Lk. 9:10-17, and John 6:S.14. It was at the time of the Passover, one year before the cru ci fi xion, as the multitudes were on their way to Jeru· salem. Noting that the throng was hungry, Jesus heard Andrew remark that there was a lad in the crowd with five loaves of bread and two small fishes -the only available foo,d. Calmly, Jesus announced that oil should sit on the grass. Then, He tOok the bread and the fish, gave thanks, and asked ""tis disciples to begin distributing the food. All ate, and there was enough bread left over to fill twelve baskets. Jesus hod faith, and believed that the tiny amount of food could provide nourishment for the 5000. To· day, by following His teachings, we find that those thingS which ore seemingly im· possible move into the oreo of the possible through our own sincere faith and belief. The first mention of the Holy Spirit i Genesis 1:2, "And the Spirit of God niovW upon the face of the waters." In GeneJis 6 :3. Let u.. therefore, with opm hearts ud with implicit confidence in the authority of the Word, coneider ils teaching on thie im· portant and delisha.ful aubjfld. In I The.ulonians 4:15-17, we read that our Lord will descend from henen, into the air, and from thence. He will aummon Hie own, all the belie.ven of this DispenNtiOfl, dead and livlnf!, to join Him. They, beins returre.cted and changed ~ retpectively, are causht up together in the clouds. united in one body in bleated unio n with the Head. Here is nothing but what baa reference to the aaints of this age, nothing that indicates Chrisl's appearance to the world, and nothin8 of His coming in the douds with flaming 6re. ·The purpcne' of this coming is to receive His Church. He deacends from heaven to us, and we ucend to meet Him. The entire Church is caught up into the air to be united with Him forever. This heavenly event having been deacribe.d, the Apostle then procef:ds in a different slrain, and opens up another subject, "But t?f the times and aeasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you·" (I Theu. 5: I ). The subject here is of "the Day of the Lord," not of the catching up of the Church. The Day of the Lord had been clear I y prophesied and described by the prophe ts. Thus Paul clearly distinguished between the Rapture and the Revelation, and this distinction i11 to be kept dearly in our minds as we Atudy the Word. DIFFERENCES AS TO THEIR CHARACTERI STICS In the Rapture, Christ will come into the region of the atma, phere, and the "dead in Ch"Tist," and all living believers shall be caught up to meet Him "in the air ." It seems pmbable that thi11 event will even be invi&ible u far u the wo rld is concerned. But in the Revelation. Christ shall openly reveal Himself. Christ will be unveiled befo re the world and manifested openly in all the majesty, power and glory of Deity. Many Sc ripturt:t~ tell us of thi~ overwhelming, tri- umphant event rRev. 1:7. Matt. 24:30, Matt. 24:27. Rev. 19:1 I ). In both cases tht: Lord Jeaus returns per· sonally and literall)·· In the Rapture it is "the l..ord Hftnself," who de&eends, and in the Revelation "this !arne Je11ua" returns in the "same manner.'' as He went away I I Thess. 4 :16,Acts 1:11). Thl!' Rapture will probably be visible only to the Church. while the Revelation will cer· tainly be visible to all people t Rev. I :7). In the Rapture, Christ will come for His saints I I Theu. 4:16-17 ~. while in the Revelation He will come with His aaints (Jude 14-15). In the Rapture there will be o nly the voice of an archangel (I Thea. 4:16) but ·in the Revelation the Lord will he ~mpenied by many angels (Matt. 25:31, Luke 9 :26}. Jn the Rapture He comn to gather the ~urch, and to pre&ent it to Himaelf a g lorious Church fEph. 5 :27 1. but in the Revelation He comes back with His Nints to rule the earth m righteou!lneu (Jude 14-15). DIFFERENCE AS TO PlACE OF MANIFESTATION When Chri!!t comt'S in the Rapture He will come in the air, but when the Revelat ion occurs Ht: will de8<:end to the Mount of Olive!, the place from which He ascended (I Thess, 4 :17, 7..ech . )1J:41 . DIFFERENCE AS TO THE TIME The Rapture will he followed by the dark night of lhe Great Tribulation I 2 T hl!!l!!. 2:7-8). The Great Tribulalion will be the period of the world's judgment, but the Church will not. pass through it, fo r, "We are not of the night"; and we art "children of the day," and "God hath not appointed us to wrath (the Grt:at Tribulation ), but to obtain salvation !the Rapture) by our Lord Jesus Christ'' 0 Thn.a. 5 :91. But while the Rapture pTettdta this period, the Revelation will come at the close of the Great Tribulation, and will be followed by the 1=1orious Millennia! Kin!(dom. Be!wet:n us and the Rapture there is not a !>ingle predicted event to he fulfilled ; but he- tween us and the Revelation there are many prophesied events, wh ich must come to pan-- the se11li ng of the J.l4,()(X), the rise of the Anti· christ. the building of Babylon, and the battle of Armag~ddon. Between the two stages of the second coming are the amazing Ae.Ven year5 of the GTeat Tribulation, which yean form the burden of the hooks of Daniel and Revelation. ? ? Res tr icting the use of property by legislation is sei- zure of property values 1ust as s ure ly as if it had been done at the point of a gun. Sugaracoating th is act ion with sweet words of concern over "pub I ic peace, heal th , safety and welfare " does not legalize the deed. The stated purpose of th e emergency ordinance is the enactment of permanent legisl ation to force business areas to provide off~t reet par king, even though bu il d· ings were designed and bui lt under regulations t hat d id not reQui re the parking. Of course it is a desirable and noble purpose, but noble goals cannot be achieved by depriving the property owner of the use that he paid for in good faith.,Such legislat ion ~an be defended only with the a rgument that "the end justifies the means" -the basic philosophy of all totalitarian governments. The effect of these new restrictions wit I be to "freeze" the developrrent of the business districts -because businessmen with moderate financial means .,k.annot pos- sibly afford the greatly added cost ·of oroviding the park- ing. Th e result will be deterioration of t hese business district s . In case of destruction of a'building py catas- trophe, the result could be financial ru in for the aver- age property owner and bu sinessman , because of lhe tremendous extra expense of rebuilding. The Log of Oct. 26, following the initial adoption of the emergency control ordinance, set forth the impor- tance of property rights, and how this ordinance strikes at heart of these rights. Here are excerpts from that Log: • • • PINCERS OF CONTROL CLOSE IN TIG~TER Th rough the years it has been the rule of law, and o f basic justice, that property righ ts cannot be legislated away by a law making body . When someone buys property, he e Xpects to enjoy the use o f that property under the same rules that existed at the time of pu rchase. There are provisions in law fo r s everance damage fo r loss of property righ t s. Cou rts o f law are available for hearing of damage claims wh en property rights are injured. The individual liberty enjoyed in any nation can be measu red by the degree of property rights held by the in- dividual. There can be no freedom of the press unless the re is private ownershi~o f printi ng presses and buil~ ings to r printing plants. There can be no freedom of reli- gion if there is no private property to provi de a place for a place to r wo rship. Freedom of speech would be mean· ingless i f we had no privately owned halls and houses and bu ildings whe re we can speak our piece. The issue in each case is the same: Th e alternative to private ownership is government ownership, and whosoever is the o wner set s th e rules and regulations fo r use o f the property. We a re now seeing a continuing attack on the rights of property owners, and the result is an ominous erosion ot indi vidual liberty. There is, of course, the classica l retort : Just wh at righ ts have you ever lost? I can retort in retu rn that in the almost 20 years that I have been publishing a newspaper in Newoort Beach, t have felt th e pinters of governmental control s teadily closing in on my ri ght to operate a business. Monday evening the jaws of the pincers closed in a li ttle mo re with the approval of Emergency Ordinance 1235 by the Newport Beach City Council . The ordinance d ra s ti cally changes the rules fo r use and development of property by imposing stringent off-s treet parking controls where such controls had not eiCi s led before. The rules that we re in eff ect when the property was purchased have been changed. In some cases it could mean drasti c loss to a property owner. In some cases it could mean failure of a business. The new control s apply to new constru c tion and re- building on a business lot. This includes rebuilding after destru ct ion by fi re o r earthQuake o r other catastrophe. In such a case the property owner can no longer restore th e property that he had at the time of purchase. The parking controls drastically reduce the size of building that can be constructed, and thu S sharp ly redu ce the rental income. Rebuilding could be economically unfeasible. • • • WE GET TME KIND OF LAIS WE DESERVE A remark by an obs erving newsman at Monday even- ing's Counc il meeting pointed out an ominous side I ight: "ft Is appall ing how unconcerned the people are ove r this attack on property rights ." It is their unconcern that paves the way fOf this gra- dual erosion of our rights. Home owners should not be so complacent over th Is drastic action by the City Coun· cll. What can be done to bus iness districts by Council legislation can be done also to residential ateas. This . Is not just Idle scare talk. Th~ attempt already has been made; there have been efforts to rezone areas on Balb01 Island, and on Balboa Peninsula, and In corona del Mar from R..;? to R•l.
