HundRds and hundreds of years befOft adence rrvealed the fact, Job had written that the earth rotates around the sun~ OM A•onl' Maa:r Moreover, the Bible pl.alniy sa)'s that our earth 11; just one of a number of planets. Thla is clearly taurht in Hebrews 1 :2b, " ... by whom oUo M made tl&e worlds." NotiCE' that "worlds" is plural. Again in Hebre wa 11 :3, "Thro..gA fait.\ we tnwfe-r•toftd tMt tile worlda (plural ) wer-e fra'fftll!d b)l tl\e wor'd of Oocl." The writer of .Hebnwa did not determitl(! thbi truth by ux of a teiHCOPC. He did not have a tele- ICOpe. But he did have something better-the God who made the planetl told him about it and In- structed him u to what he should write~ Wlad Job wrote, '"To make the wel:&bt for the winds; and be wefaheth the waters by meuure" {Job 28:25). Consider the makeup of our at- mosphere and you will rudUy IH that God dkl., indeed, wel&:h the winds. Our atmosphe.re is composed, primarily, of nitrosen and oxyaen. But-and think about this---air Is not made up of equal parts of nitrogen and oxy~n. In every one hundred parts of air there-is ex- actly 79 parts or nitrorm and 21 parlll of oxyaen. Whether you arc at tht' bottom of the Grand Canyon or on top of Old Smoky, the air around you wiU be enctly the same proportion. Now. the atmoa- phere JS thinnrr wveral mile~: up than it ls at .tea level, but the proportion of nlt~n and oxyaen will ~main constant. Furthermore, our very lives depend upon the at- motphere ~tainlng thiJ exact mix· tu:e. Notice that the Lord made nl· trogen much Uahter In wel·eht than oxyaen. Doubtloeu He had many reasons for doinc thla. One or lbem, however, is obvious to any or us. When we b~ath, It is Lhe oxyaen that we primarily need and use. This ox.yaen, taken Into the lun&.s, coes Into the blOOd- stream and thtu reaches t'Very ccll In the body. When we exhale, it iJ primarily the hydrocen that we txpl'l from our systems. If tht nitroa;en were heavier than the oxygen, we would .soon be enaulfed splratkm of the Scriptures. W•ter Just as God rnade the ·'welaht for the wlnda," He ''weiaheth the waters by measure." The chemical formula for water is H20, which means that water conslstJ; of two pc~rU of hydrocen to one part of oxygen. The com- bining welrht of hydrogen Is one and the combinina weight of oxy- J'('n Is sixteen. Since there must be two parts of hydrogen for one or oxyren in order to make pure water, we must take exactly two pounds of hydrogt'n and exactly ~:ixt~n pound! of oxygen to make II!IJhteen poundJ of water ~ All unadulterated watt'r Is made of the.e two gaU('!I in that exact proportion. For thousands of yean rain was a mystery t o rnan. From whence dkl it come'! Of course, they knew It feU from the sky but how In the world did It get up there! What kept it up there! How much was there of it! Modem sden«> ha!l supplied the a nswer. We now know that the sun cau5t'l watt'r to evaporate ond draw• It Into the sky wht!Te it stays until it falls aJ rain. God, who carefully weighed and meas- ured the properties of both wind and water, created them especially for this purpose. Water is approxlmately BOO limes a. heavy as the aurroundlng atrno~phe~. But when the sun shine• hot on water, it may expend to 900 times Its normal size~ Thus water can t'Xpend to an Incredible extent. W .. t Does t~1 llble Say Abo1t Speakl11 II , ..... s "Please expl1in what is really meant by 'talldn& in tongues.' There is much talk of It now even amonJ Lutberaru 'lind all claim a Biblical basis for the practlce or 'gilt,' ·as they feel it l.t. My understanding bas always been that the occurrence related in the Bible meant that all auembled were giYen a common language, enabling tbem to understand eacb other as they bad come from diverse places and each had his own lancuage until the miracle occurred. The present belief seems to be that it is a special communication with God and a .sort of 'transported' f«linc." This is not tbe first reader to inquire about this .subject. We shall not be able in a brief uticlt: to examine .everythina that Scripture AJI about 1pe:atinc with tonrues nor how Scrl~ has been ut)dentood by vari- our people. We shall, however, take note of .some poinU it will be well to remember. Whit Happaned on Pent.colf On Pente001t Day the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit was accompanied with the gift of speaking "with other tongues" C Aclll 2:4). ln a miraculous manner it hap- pened that "every man heard them (the disciples) speak in his own language" (v. 6). Tbis is nof called a special language different from otber human language. It was that each heard what was said in hiJ own language. Spealtin& with tongues is also referred to in two other pl1ces in the Book of Acts. When Peter preached to Cornelius in Caesarea, the Holy Ghost fell on those who heard him, and Peter and the others with him "heard them speak with tongues and magnify God" ( 10:46}. Later when Paul prt>ached at Ephesus to 10me people who had never before beard of the Holy Gbo.st and knew only the baptism of John, ''Tbe Holy Ghost came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophe· sit'd" 119:6). These: two examples, however, tell us holh- in g as tv whal this "speaking witb tongues" was like. In his First Letter to tbe Corinthians Paul refus to the gift of tongues at gruter lt>nglb. There are various refe rences throughout chapters 12 to 14. All the Same Kind of Speaking? One question that ari~~es is wbetht>r these other OC· casions o( speaking with tongues refer to the same kind of speaking u occurred on Pentecost Day. Some believe they do. Othen point out that in I Corinthians we are told that ''he that speaketh in an "nknown tongue spe:aketh not unto men, but unto God ; for no man undf'ralandeth him" ( 14:2). H the congres:ation Is to benefit from his "speak· ing," either he himself or 10meone with the girt of in· terpretation must explain what be said cvv. 5, 6, 27). This gives the impreJSion of a s~king that does not involve the mere use of any ordinary human language. How important a spiritual gilt waa this? St. Paul makes no reference to It in any other letter. Even wben hE> writes "' the Romans about spiritual gifts in chapter 12. he uya.: nuthlne of speakinc with tongue•. And In writing to l~e Corinthians be mentions it last amu~oa the gifts listed f I Cor. 14:27, 28 J. Although be recognizes this as a gift of the Holy Spirit, yet he is concerned that the Corinthians should not vaJue it above propheaying l vv. 5, 19}.
