RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR
Start the New Year with a resolve to
preserve our nation as a constitutional
republic, and then follow this r 'esolve with
action. Here are some action resolutions
for 1970 that can help save our country:
• Attend a Bible believing church every
Sunday; read through the entire Bible dur-
Ing 1970.
• Read at least one Americanist, con-
servative book each month. You can start
with "The Ordeal of Otto Otepka," which
offers a quick survey of the conspiracy
that is closing in on our freedom.
• Subscribe to conservative periodicals,
such as American Opinion Magazine, Re-
view of the News, Human Events, the Dan
Smoot Report, U. S. News and World Re-
port, News & Views of the Church League
of America, and the recently launched
Christian Crusade Weekly.
• Listen to conservative commentators
and programs, such as the George Putnam
qews, Manion Forum, Christian Crusade,
2oth. C}'l!ttlry Reformation Hour, Richard
Cotten, Dan \.smoot and Dr. Steuart Mc-
Birnie's Voice of Americanism.
• Support our local pollee against the
revolutionaries who seek to undermine
respect for law and order and harass our
police with propaganda and civil turmoil.
• Defend our schools against those who
seek to undermine our children with por~
nography, drugs, sensitivity training, im-
moral sex education and permissiveness.
• Support candidates who stand for law
and order, private enterprise, patriotism,
morality, and defense of our country and
constitution against all enemies, foreign
and domestic.
• Read the Newport Harbor Ensign.
Do all these, and you too can be what
the left calls a right wing extremist,
which, being interpreted, Is a Christian
American patriot.

JANUARY 13th ELECTI.ON.
(BALBOA BAY CLUB LEASE EXTENSION)
Q: WHY AN ELECTION IN THE FIRST PLACE?
A: Because the City Charter requires that City leases of 25
years or more duration be approved by the voters. The
Balboa Bay Club lease has approximately 29 years remain ·
ing. However, the request for extension for an additional
26 years makes the vote mandatory.
Q: WHO WORKED OUT THE TERMS OF THE LEASE?
A: A City Cnuncil committee and the City staff worked over.
a year negotiating the lease. They also hired a respected
independent research firm. Development Research Asso·
ciates of lns Angeles , to evaluate the lease proposal and
to advise them . The full City Council unanimously
approved the lease document for submission to the voters.
Q: THEN THOSE WHO HAVE STUDIED THE LEASE MOST
CLOSELY MUST FEEL THAT THE TERMS ARE FAIR. HOW
DOES THE BAY CLUB FEEL ABOUT THEM?
A: While consenting to the City's terms, the Club considers
them very stringent, but the Bay Club has accepted them
out of a desire to properly finance high quality improve·
ments which require an economic life of more than the
remain ing 29 years
Q: WHAT ARE THE TERMS OF THE PRESENT LEASE?
A: The Club pays the City $45,000 minimum renlal and an
overage based on the level of gross sales.
Q: SO THE CLUB IS A CHIEF CONTRIBUTOR TO LOCAL AGEN·
CIES. HOW MUCH WILL THE CLUB PAY UNDER THE NEW
LEASE?
A: The minimum rental will JUmp from $45,000 to $150,000
annually and the percentage on sales will increase.
Q: HOW MUDI DID THE CLUB PAY IN TAXES?
A: Last year $10,000 in City occupancy tax and $137 ,000 tn
property taxes with $68,000 of the latter sum going to the
Newport ·Mesa Unified School District.
Q: WITH THE INTELLIGENT FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE
PROPERTY, SALES AND PROPERTY TAXES WILL FURTHER
INCREASE. WHAT WILL BE THE NET GAIN TO THE CITI-
ZENS OF NEWPORT IF THE LEASE IS EXTENDED?
A: Economics Research Associates estimates that over the
next 29 years alone (the remaining lease period) the City
will enjoy a $7.3 million net gain in revenue and that local
government and schools will receive over a million dollars
in taxes as a result of the Implementation of the Club's
maste( plan. So this election prov1des the taxpayers of
Newport Beach with a unique opportunity to finance many
of its capital improvements or new recreational prOJects
without digging into their own pocket s.
Q: DO THE TERMS REMAIN STATIC UNDER THE EXTENSION
PROPOSAL?
A: No, and this is a very favorable concessiOn to the City. The
minimum increases every five years w1th cost·Of ·livmg
adjustments. Furthermore , the extension provides for a
complete renegOtiation of both the mimmum and the per·
centages du1ing the lease term at numerous times
Q: NONE OF THESE PERIODIC ADJUSTMENTS ARE PROVIDED
FOR IN THE PRESENT LEASE?
A: No, and if the extension is not approved . the C1 ty Will real ·
ize very little more from the property than 1f does today-
and this condition will ex 1st for the next 29 years
Q: ISN'T THERE ANOTHER ISSUE IN THE CAMPAIGN -THAT
OF CREATING A PUBLIC PARK ON THIS LAND WHEN THE
CURRENT CLUB LEASE EXPIRES?
A: The answer lo that is prov1ded by the City 's own consult ·
ants . They conclude: "Thi s alternative does not . m our
opimon, represent a reasonable development alternative

A: Most assuredly not. It could not afford to.
Q: THEN THE REAL ISSUE HER£ IS WHETHER THE CITY IS
GET11NG A FAIR DEAL F1IOM THE PROPERTY IT OWNS?
A: This is precisely the question and it has been soundly
answered by the City staff, the City's Cnnsultants, the
Cnuncil and community leaders. It is an important issue
for every taxpayer in Newport Beach. The rising cost of
government demands a YES vote from all of us on the lease
on January 13.

Here are two parables, told in vasiJy dlfrerent circumstances. both of
which a re ~to I his end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint." Both
parables follow a n argument, o r line of reasoning, whkh proceeds quite
simply and with an earthy realism. It ts to show how typically men react to
requests and pl'litions addressed to them; the natural and goodly human
reaction hav ing been established, then it follows how much moll! will God

The first parable is addressed to Jesus' disciples who have asked him,
"r .nrd. tea('h us to pray.~ To them the arg:ument is," If a son ahall ask bread
of any of you that is a father. will he give him a stone? o r If he uk a flah •. wtll
he for a fi sh give him a serpent? Or if ht' shall ask an egg, will he offer h1m a
scorp ion?~ 11 is unthinkable that a nyo ne would so do-ev~n a criminal or a
revolutionist. Yet all men since Adam's Fa11 are wkked and evU, even the
disciples. ~ 1 r ye then, being evil, know how to g ive good gift• unto your chil-
dren: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to
them that ask him?"
Th~ parable. howt-ver. does not even appeal to a father's care for hll

nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me. I will avenge her, lest

admirable.

public acandal, giving people something to talk about and making many bold
to preach. '"Some indeed preach Christ even or envy and strife; and some also
of good wl.ll: The ,one preach Christ of contention, not 1locerely, •uppo~tna
to add affliction to my bonds: but the other o f love, knowing that I am aet for
the defence o r the Go1pel. What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether In
pretence, or In truth, Christ is preached: and I therein do rejoice, yea, and wlll
