HA.APA, owner and publishtJ of the Ensl~ THE FREE.WAY ... AND POLLUTION The alarming perU of pollution Is an Increasing cause of concern throughout our land. With this real danger In mind, It would be a disaster of major pro· portions t o put a freeway through the heart of Newport Beach and Corona del Mar. Latest plans tor the coastal freeway call for a TEN LANE speedway through our community. Estlm<.tes of future dally traltlc are as high as 170 THOUSAND cars a day, emitting carbon monoxide pollution Into the air that we breathe. Just let that sink In for a little while: 170 thousand ADDITIONAL CARS going daily through our town. This figure is ADDITIONAL because state highway en- gineer Bill Hashimoto himself says that the freeway, U constructed, would not at all lessen the traffic on our Coast Hwy. All the freeway traltlc would be new traffic, and would actually add to our local congestion because of the "spill over" of freeway cars onto our local streets. Thus It Is clear that tb& freeway would NOT help our local traltlc problems, In fact would bring greater congestion ancf on top of all that would be the suffering of hundreds of families and businessmen who would be driven out of their homes and shops. The Harbor Area Freeway Fighters are to be commended for their hard hitting campaign to move the freeway route completely out of our city, Assemblyman Bob Badham and Senator John Schmitz also deserve high praise tor co-authoring a bill In the state legislature to eliminate the Newport Beach-Corona del Mar seg- ment of the freeway. Now what can you, as a private citizen, do In this all-Important e{fort? Your most Important contribution at this moment Is to sign the Freeway Fighters' petition. There is a copy In the special supplement in this week's Ensign. U you have not already sig ned it, do so right now, and send it to the Freeway Fighters head- quarters at 2612 W. Coast Hwy., Newport Beach. Thousands of names on these petitions will have a tremendous effect In Sacramento when the Badham-Schmltz • • • 6% interest; s15 million from South Korea. St. Thomas Bible Lesson RECKONING OF TALENTS Matthew 25: 14-30 Lenon 14, Serieo Ill Here la another parable of the Kingdom of God setting forth the manner and condltJont or judgement. In II Jeaua warns that he will call every man to aa:ount for hla management of powera and graces entruated to him. From It we learn thai we art In a at&te of work and butlnen In Chrillt, and are com· mi11loned to contribute to the buUdlng up of the Church. The form of the parable lA again allegorical. Jeau.11 ia the master. the man traveUing Into a far oountry: "When he ucended o n high, he gave girt. IO men" ( Ephealaru 4 :8). He lAthe absolute owner and proprietor or all persona and things. and In a ap«tal mannu of his church; Into hit hands all thin«• are dellvered. The aervantt are Chrlatlana, born In hla own house. bought wllh hit own blood, devoted to his praiae, employed In hl1 work. It !1 probable, obaerves Matthew Henry, thai mlni1ters are especially lnlended . The lesson of the parable Is plain. Ilia so relevant and 10 applicable that It hu given UJ the word "laJent" to be used In our commo n apeech aa meaning what It atand• fo r ln the story. We speak of talents today aa special aptlludes or gtltl, utually omitting to add "gllll of grace." Hardly anyo ne thlnka o f o '"talent" ln ttl batlc meaning of a plea of mQney-a rather valuable piece. OrdJnary moralizing o n thle parable UJually dweUs on the Importance of trainln« and developing each penon hl1 oWn apedal aptitudes such as a good etnglng vok:le. a sharp mind, a strong coordinated physique, powers of leader· ehlp, etc. Thew thlnge &fit! cer1alnJy bnportant. and surely Chrt.t wUI call ue to an1wer for the way In which we have developed these natural powen. Whatever way is uaed at.in the anger of Marshall Duffield, Chainnan of the Harbor Area Freeway Fighters who is leading Newport Beach resistance to plans of the State High- way Commission to split the heart of the community with an unwanted Coastal "Scenic" Freeway which haa a price 118 ruinous as the degree of nuisance it will bring. "Smothering existing traffic lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway under dirt of a new freeway embank- ment is a freaky notion by it8elf," Duffield says, "but iMlating upon doing so at edravagant cost is past aJI understanding. The resi- dential and commercia l propertiefl which must be condemned fo r this right- of-way are the highest prM:ed land in the city. "Detailed analysis of the savings possible by routing the pro~ freeway along another path were ex- plained to the State High- way Comm ission more than five years ago. The tota l sum invo lved then wu estimated at $68 mil- lion. That is no triOe. The size today, however, is even greater." Under date of Decem- ber 14, 1964 , DeLuew, Cather & Co., consulting en1ineen; of San Francisco reported to the State Hilh- wa.y Commiaaionen that an inland route they had atudied as an alternative to the Pacific Coast Highway path would bE' .98 miles shorter and would save $10 million in oosts of right of way plus $7.5 in construc- tion oosts. FurthE'nnore, the inland route would pennit build- ing the Newport Freeway Bhorter hy .80 miles and the Oran~~:e Freeway ehorter by 1.20 miles, which would result in a further saving of $10,000,- 0CX>. 1lle&e e<:onomies to- talled SZ7.5 millions. In addition, DeLuew. Cather & Co. calculated, the savings for throurb travelers in time and in ve- hicle operating ezpense would be worth $1.35 mil- lions yearly. Over the esti- mated 30 years life or the proposed freeway, this sav- ing would accumulate to $40.5 millions for drivers wholle California gas taxes supply so much of the money n eeded to build freeways. It wu along the8e lines that the then State High- way Encineer Juper C.
