need for helping Newport Beach solve
its traffic pr oblems. But such great con-
cern is certainly greatly diminished in
the case of Assemblyman Robert Burke
of Hunting ton Beach and the city officials
of Laguna Beach, who have been success-
ful in getting the fr e eway route to by-
pass inland of their cities. I have heard
no words of concern from them or from
Costa Mesa Mayor Robert Wilson or
from ~e Irvine Co. about the appalling
wreckage of dwellings and businesses
that their insistence on the coast free-
way r oute would cause in Newport Beach
and Co r ona del Mar, or about the 2,500
to 3,000 local r esiden ts who would be
driven out of their homes_ Nor have I
heard any comm ent on the fact that the
freew~y would NOT help solve our traffic
problems, but indeed would add to the
crisis by bringing up to 170,000 addition-
al cars into our city daily, and leave our
Co ast Hwy. just as crowded as :>ow.

hard way last week through the defeat
of the Badham fr eeway bill. The totally
undemocr a ti c ··rule by committee" was
exposed by the fact that just 2 votes in
the Senate transportation committee kept
the bill from th e Senate floor, where ap-
proval seemed certain. Thus 2 votes
were able to frustrate the c learly demon-
strated will of the majority of Newport
Beach r esiden ts, and m ost likely the
m ajority op inion of the Senate itself. A
court challenge of such flagrant abuse
of the principle of majority rule should
result in speedy reversal of such pro-
cedure if the case were to come before
the California Supreme Court and the
U, S. Suprem e Court, where the "one
man, one vote" concept is deemed so
important.

Jesus Christ is the only one who can aave the
si nner from his sin. He is the only one who can
rule in righteousness. He is the only one who
can bring peace. A..nd all this palaver about peace,
peace, peace is in vain. The Pope has. been talk·
ing alx:M.Jt peace again Be has the same old em-
flhasis upon peace -r]mt we are somehow or
other to make compromises, and then we wiH
have peace. It will never come that way. The
only way we can have peace right now is by the
strength of the might that there is upon this
earth. Our nation has it , and if our nation would
as~rt itself, we could have some kind of peace,
at least fo r a little while. But that is only force.
Yet Jesus Christ wiU come, and wheo rle
comes amJ fights, delivers Israel and is recog·
nized, He will be King over all the earth, and
we are going to see a. reign of righteousness on
thi:> earth. We are going to set: a millennia!

sonally. 1 have no problem with that matter.
The Lord Jesus Christ was a babe -v1sible ,
personal. He was a teacher -visible, penonal.
He was crucified. They buried H im. He was
raised from the dead. He was in Jerusalem
,nee. Why couJd Hf' not come: back again ?

Because ot the current popularity ot that symbol, perhaps we should
know something more about Its background. The man most responsible for Its
revival as a peace symbol Is Bertrand Russell, the British philologist, mathe,
matlclan and philosopher. He proposed Its use to youthful disarmament demon,
strators at Aldermaston In England In 1958. His purpose was to radicalize
British youth. For, you see, Russell is a socialist who favors communism as
the only form of government thai holds out any hope lor this world. He Is also
openly anti-Christian. In his book, "The Will To Doubt,t' he wrote, "I am a
dissenter !rom all religions, and I hope that every kind of religious belle! will
die." So it Is not at all surprising that Russell should have chosen a c lassical
anti-Christian design whic h is a perversion of the cross of Christ as hls peace
symbol. The kind of peace he is proposing for modern man is not peace with
GOO: in Christ which makes peace possible with one another through Chrlst. He
wants the world to unite on the basis of socialistic principles. [n saying what
he does, Russell reveals himseLf as an agent and a tool of Satan and an avowed
enemy of Jesus.
Russell's peace symbol has for many centuries been a ssociated in
c lassical symbolism with Satanlsm, devil wors hip and black magic. This Is
r .:adily und er s tandable because of Emperor Nero's use of the broken cross to
crucify Peter upside down. The Encyclopedia Britannica says of Nero that he
initiated "the later policy of persecution (of Christians) and earned himseLf the
reputation of Antichrist in the Christian tradition." It was his decision that the
arms of Peter's cross be broken and pointed downward. That c ross then be-
came a symbol t o ear ly C hristians of all that is evil and that opposes Christ and
His s aving Gos pe l. John Knox, the founder of Scotch Presbyterianism also under-
s tood this symbol in that way. A woodcut of Satan whic h he carved has been pre-
served in a museum i n Paris. It is entitled "The Sign of the Beast." It is a
hideous thing, and properly s o . The eyes of the devil in Knox's 16th century
woodcut are formed in the shape of Nero's c r oss.
In the dark ages the Nero cross was adopted by Satanists who sought
to make a mockery of the teachings of Jes us . More r ecently this same symbol
was painted o n the door!" of Christian chur c hes forced to c lose by the Bols heviks
in Ru ssia. So it is not jus t an innocent , innocuous little symbol of sorts, and it
is mos t definite ly not a symbol of peace in the Christian sense or in a ny Other
s ense. That many people today wear or dis play this symbol unwittingly we can
w e ll understand. But our enemie::. a re not ignorant or unwitting as to its s ignifi-
cance. Calling it a peace sy mbol is a typical example of their s trategy of calling
black white, or of labeling·a Ma rxist dictatorship a people's democracy. The
next time you s ee someone displaying s uch a symbol, tell him that it is not a
symbol of peace, but of death and destruction.
Some wi It contend, of cours e, that the use of this sy mbol in the pas t
as a symbol of evil does not prevent its use today as a peace symbol. If millions
of people tOOay regard it as a peace symbol, then that is what it is, they will
argue. That is not sensible, however. 1t is naive, By the same reasoning, if
you could get millions of people to call an apple a tomato, then a n apple would be
a tomato. it is and always has been a symbol of death and des truction. The people
of J e rus alem certain ly did not see it as a peace symbol when the legions of
Rome s warmed over their walls. After the carnage and destruction were ended,
and the inhabitants slain or carried off as s laves, peace prevailed at the s ite
that once was the Holy City -t.he peace of the cemetery.
II . Over agains t this modern symbol of death, we dis play the only leg iti-
mate symbol of peace, the c ross of our Lord Jesus Christ. By the grace of God
and as the people of GOO, we do know the thing~ that belong unto ou r peace. We
know that before that infamous week was over which gave occasion to Jes us to
s peak these words of pro phecy, the c ross became a cruel ins trumpnt of d eath
for J esus . But He we nt to it willingly bear ing the burden of our si ns together
with the sins of all men of all time. Before He left that cross He s uffpred the
penalty for every man's s in. He put an end to the cause of s trife between man
and God. as well as to Satan's tyra nny over man. The arms of Hi s cross are
not broken; they are outs tretched in a gesture that e ng ulfs all men w1th the love
and m e r cy of GOO. That c ross meant death for J esu~, but it means life for us.
The cross is a oeace symbol that truly g ives peace to heartb once worried about
si n and about separation fro m God.
The cross of Jes us calls the world to repentance. It ca lls for a
change o! heart and mind. And it holds out the promise that "if any man be in
Christ, he is a new creature." Only that man who is a new creature in Christ,
renewed in heart tu1d mind by His Spirit, can live at peace with his fellowman.
This is the kind of peace-talk our wo rld needs to hear today as never before so
that men might begin again to hope.
When the cross of Chri s t replaced the c r oss of Nero on the standards
of the Ro man e mpire two hundred fifty years after J erusalem was destroyed,
men went forth into the world under th.e s ign of the cross say ing, "In hoc signa
vincit ," -under this sign, conquer. The cross conquers men because it con-
quers sin. It is the only power on earth which can effectively trans plant the
heart of GOO into the heart of man and s tart him loving again with the love of
God.
Friend, Jes us is calling to you today. He wants to know if you are
ready and willing to take up His cross and to follow in Hi s train. Jerusalem wa ~
destroyed because its people turned from Him and rejected Him, II America is
destroyed, it will be for the same reason. Renew your covenant then wlth Him
today, and then ,
"Onward, Chr istian soldiers, marching (not stand ing s till or sitting
idly by), Marching as to war.
