"Christ •s all and in all." Col. 3:11. Immortality by Or. David L. Cooper The 1mmortallty of the •ul IS a very 1mportant subJect. There are some who kac!"l that there is no ScFI 1ral doctrine related to the immortality of the soul: that only believers receive mortality. These same teachers deny the doctrine concerning eternal punlshme in Hell. In Genesis 2:7 we read th~, the Lord, having formed the material body of man, "breathed mto h1s nostnls the breath of ltves (Hebrew-literal) and man became 'l livi ng (immortal) soul.'' This was something in addition to what animals possess. Death has different s1snifications . It means separation. When we speak of c.eath we think of the separation of the MJUI from the body. In that sense man C:oes die. Yet. the soul •s to return to 1ts body. In Matthew 2:5:46 we read, "And t!lese shall go away mto eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life." !hose represented by the goats that are put on the left, ir. this statement con- cerning the jud11ment of the nations, go into eternal punishment The sheep, who are put on the right hand. go mto eternal l1fe. In this passage, ·•eternal punish- ment" is just as l1teral and extens1ve as "'eternal life.'' We must conclude that man, whether saved or lost. 1s an 1mmortal souL The; fl4tahteous are raised to a !tate ol blessed immort3l1ty: the lost are raised to 5tlf'ttp ei!mal punishment. The two are co-extensive, both continuing m a conscious ~.throughout all eternity. Another important passage related to this subject, it'fitt-Yelation 14~!}.11! "And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a great voice, If any man W«-~hippeth the beast and h1s •mage, and receiveth a mark on his forehead, or upon his hand, he also shall drmk of the wine of the wrath of God. which is prepar-ed un mixed 1n the cup of t11s anger; and he shall be tormented with fire and bfim- stone in the presence or lhe holy angels. and in the presence of the lamb: and the ~moke of their torment goeth up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night, they that worship the beast and his tmage, and whoso receiveth the mark cf his name." God is spoken of in the Book of Revelatio n as existing into the ages of the ages -th1s means through all etern1ty, without end. The lost -those who are . being focused upon in this passage -110 ofl~t!IID IW@f"/asting existence .md puniShment for ever and eve r. ~· Revelation 20:10 also has a bearmg on this subjecC."lt IS the record concern- Plg Satan's being cast mto lhe lake of fire, where he Is to be punished forev• and ever. "And the devil that deceived them (the nat ions) was cast into the lake d fire and brimstone, where are also the beast and the false prophet; and they shall be tormeflted day and night for ever and ever (Greet!: unto the ages of the ages)." We note that the beast -the Ant ichrist -and h1s aide, the false prophet. .ue cast into the take of fire before the beginning of the thousand years of oor '-ord's reign. At the end of that thousand years. they are stilt there. According to Revelati~?f~ 20:10, they are .to be there for ~~r and _ever, into _the ceaseless ages of eternity. Yes. the soul IS 1mmortal and 1t 1s destined to ex•st -or to live on -in a place determined by God. When we move • fl oor "houses of clay .. - '15 the poet describes our earthly bodies -those t; fJ a Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour will 'o oft into blessed iml'f'IOft.t,.,~-t O. the other hand, those who do not accept H1m, will move into cursed l"""''rt:elity.
