In what church did you grow up7 How did It Influence your outlook on llfe7 A.o a young boy I attended Sunday School at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Wash- ington, D.C. I also aan.g in the choir there, and occasionally I was a soloist. As aasistant Sunday School superintendent I was given the oppor· tunity of aaauming responsibility in my church. Later I attended the P resbyteria n church of which I am now a member. My early life in the church helped me to understand the personal responsibilities each of us must accept in pro- viding a moral and spiritual example for others, both in word and in deed. Could you deacrlbe the Chrllltien atmos- phere of your childhood7 Ours waa truly a Chriatian home. Both of my parents took very seriously their responsibility of providing for the s piritual as well aa the material needs of their children. We attended church u a family, and my father and mother accompanied us to Sunday School. The Bible played a vital role in our home life, and we gathered regularly for family worship. Could you tell us about the way you were taught the Bible7 My parents read the Word of God aloud and explained ita meaning to us children. They made it releva nt to us so that we could look to the Bible as a guide fpr our daily lives. For me the Bible is a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. Was there some point In your youth when you made a commitment to Chrillt by faith7 Could you tell ua where and when7 Because 1 grew up in a Christian horne, I feel that Christ has always been a part of my life. Whl do some leaves turn red, some yellow, still others with intermediate shades. In with the chlorphyll of the leaf are other chemicals, not so dominant, however. These are pigments. One such pigment is anthocyanim, a red color. Many apples haw much of this pigment. These pigments are more stable than chlorophyll. Wh1le the chlorophyll is being: drawn out, these p igments stay and give t he leaf its new color its fall dress. In some leaves both pigments are present in various proportions. ihey g ive to the leaf those intermediate shades. Wha t causes the leaf to fa ll off in Fall? It doesn't do that 1n summer. tn fact, the leaf hung on so t ightly you needed eKtra energy to pull •t ot'f. Now m the Fall all drop off themselves. The Lord made all things well. When the leaf drops. off, you see only a scar. The cut is entirely sealed over. Tha t, too. is so wise !I" act. J . EDGAR HODV!R bara Jane Mackie, was kidnaped on December 17 in Decatur, Georgia. Kidnaping ie one of the most atrocious of crimes. Every available ~ source of the FBI was mobilized to locate the young girl. Time was of the eeaence and eluea were few. Three days later a n anonymous phone call was received by our Atlanta office. In an exeited. voice the calle r gave directions for finding a "capsule." FBI agents raced to the location given by the anonymous caller. It was an area wild and un- inhabited, with many vines, scrub bushes and trees. 1 was in formed by telephone of the tip given to our Atlanta office. Along with my asso- ciates, I knew we would need help beyond our- selves to find the young gi rl. Our agents searched frantically. They were alert for any possible cl ue-a spot of disturbed ground, a broken twig, a scarred piece of bark. AB the December day began to grow dark, the agents wondered. "Was the a nonymous call only a cruel hoax?" Then there carne a shout from an agent deep in the woods. He had found what appeared to be freshly dug earth. Agents q ui ckly converged on this spot and could hear a kn ocking noise from under the g round. They began to dig furiously with shovels and boards. even with bare hands. Soon a wooden box was uncovered. In it was Barbara Mackie, shocked and hungry, but alive . She had been bu ried in the "capsule" for some 84 hours. We in the FBI believe that our prayers made the difference that day. What are the Christian qualities you aeek to inculcate in the young' agents whom you train. and how do you go about lt7 The FBI plays a cri tica l role in American so- ciety. Our investigations affect the li ves, repu- tations and status of many citizens. For that reason we mu~t have Special Agents of unim- peachable personal character . integr ity and hon- esty. Their investigations must be scrupulously fai r and impa rt i<d, reporting the facts without prejudice or error . They must be above the temp- tations of bribery and dishonesty. We carefully in vest igate the backgrounds of applicants for F BI employment t o determine their reputation, character and ability. Durin1 the long winter the roots cannot get mois ture out of the frozen ground. That seating also wards off insect attacks. How can the churches help re-instill character and morality in people today? On~ of the great t ragedies of the f ree world today is a decline of moral values-honesty, in- tegrity and fai r play. Crime rates have iumped drastically. An increasing number of people - both youthfu l and adult -feel that the law need not be obeyed. That enables it to roll along with great ease~ Some plants are so dependent upon catching those rolling leaves. They need them as a blanket to protect them from the cold. The hepatica, for instance, has lectves with lon11 stems . Those leaves stay on all winter. In fall the hep.~t ica leaves swirl a nd catch the rolling leaves fallen from trees. You should see how snugly the hepatica is bedded down. That's why it ca n bloom forth so early in the sprtng, the first flower of spring. The;se fallen leaves serve a n important role. Every step in God's creation has a defin1te purpoH. Those leaves gradually disintegrate and form a humus an enrichment to the soil. The leaves contain valuable minerals which the 'soil needs. good fertilizer, beneficial plant food. There is no waste in God's balance of Nature. Everything is re-used 0\ler and over again. You hear people sar,, Don't burn. the dry leaves; make a comPOst ol them. Notture teaches us that esson. God IS a &ood teacher. Too frequently today Christians are s ilent in the midst of injustice. Too frequently Christians look the other way when the law is vi olated. Too frequently Chris- tians are not ready to do t heir share as citizens. Christians have an obligation, both individually and through t heir churches, to stand up for freedom, t he dignity of the individual, and thoae moral principles which a lone make life worth living. Do you see any connection between the aubveralon of morality and the threat to the national security from ouuide enemies? America's best protection lies in the integrity, morality, honesty and patriotism of its own citizens. The foreign enemy ia always hoping t o flnd the disloyal person, the individual who for a few pieces of silver or other material reward will betray his country. To a large extent this is how the Soviets, for example, attempt to recruit spies inside the United States. They contact a prospect, and endeavor to flnd a weak- neae In his pef'tltOnality which ean be exploited. If they discover that this individual is willing to steal conftdential data from his employer or to help them In other wayJ,, they will readily pay him money. A nation which has lost ita relianee on moral values is a nation doomed to extinetlon. What would you .. y to a young pef110n tod•y who Ia conaldering the c l•lma of Chrlllt upon hia llfe7 I would tell him te ac- cept Christ fully and joyously and to do every- thing humanly pouible to follow hia prlnc!ploa.
