HAAPA, owner .nd publisher of the En~91 •oo~o~oo.oa.o~ • TEACH THEM ABOUT CAPITALISM Just before the end of the school year, I had the privilege of facing a high school class of seniors In a 90-mlnute head to bead confrontation on philosophies of government, politics and economics. There may have been some silent ones In the class who possibly favored my conservative stand, but of the articulate ones, only one was on my side. Many thanks to him. As for the others, they carried on a lively attack on what they called capital- Istic and lmpertallstic exploitation --our nation being found guilty on both counts. I was amazed and somewhat appalled to discover that my major mission In that class was the defense of capitalism -- the system of economy thai has made the United States the most prosperous, the most healthy and powerful nation In the world --the system of production that bas enabled the United States to give billions of dollars In aid to other countries. The students, so voclferoosly attacking capitalism, are themselves the fortunate recipients of the many advantages showered upon them by this very capital- Ism, which has made our nation the marvel and envy of the world for Its productive capacity. Capitalism, by dictionary definition, Is an economic system In which the owner- ship of land and natural wealth, the production, distribution and exchange of goods, and the operation of the system Itself, are effected by private enterprise and control under competitive conditions. It Is a system that encourages the accumu- lation of capital for financing new business and Industry, providing for mass produc- tion of goods, including both the essentials of life and also luxuries, at prices within the reach of all wage-earners. It Is a system that makes all of us capitalists, because from our combined savings come the funds that create the new Industries and the new jobs. All of us who have savings accounts or lite insurance policies or who own stocks and bonds are Investors In the growth and development of our nation. The only alternative to our system of freedom and private enterprise and In- dividual Initiative Is socialism, with its many faces and degrees of evil, culminat- Ing In total tyranny under an all-power central government. Soctalism, com- munism, fascism, nazism, totalitarianism --these are all instruments of the left, differing only In degree, but all based on government ownership and control. All these evils place the manacles of state control on the greatest force for progress that has ever been discovered --buman energy, which Is released to the fullest under free enterprise capital- Ism, becauae human effort Is abundantly rewarded. Boctallsm in all its forms always resulls In hunger, becau.ee Incentive for production Is taken away. Boctallsm always produces immorality, becau.ee It Is Itself Immoral, be .. d oo force, covettog IIDd theft -- ta!dor from tboee who have to give to tbolle wbo have less, uotU all have leN.
