Hit voyage to America was the realization of a vision drawn en~ tirely from the Holy Scriptures. Columbus' use of the Bible is one of the best documented facts of his remarkable career, but it is one of the least known to the general pub- lic. Christopher Columbus was a careful student of the Scriptures and of such great biblical com- _mentators as Nicholas of Lyra, St. Augustine and Pierre d'Ailly. He used Latin fluently and knew enough elementary Greek and Hebrew to study the exegesis of cer· tain biblical words that were of spe- cial interest to him. His level of scholarly attainment was unusual for a self-taught layman of his pe~ riod. All of Columbus' sailing journals and most of his private letters give evidence of hi s biblical kn owledge and his devout love for Jesus Christ. Our references in thi s article, how- ever. deal largely with one of the least known of Columbus· works, the only book that he ever wrote. To our knowledge, the Libra de las Pro · J~cias or Book of Prophecies has never been translated into English from the original Latin and Span- ish, nor has it ever been printed in this country. After considerable searchinJ, we found a scholarly edi~ tion of the full text in the Raccolto di document I e studi published in f894 by a special commission of the Italian Ministry of Public Educa~ lion, on the occasion of the four hundredth anniversary of the dis- covery of America. The Book of Propflecip. w:rittcn by Columbus. was a careful com- pilation of aU the teachings of the Bible on the subject of'"the earth, distant lands, seas, populati on movements, undiscovered tribes, prophecies of the future spread of the Gospel throughout the whole world, prophecies of travel between distant places, prophecies of the end of the world and the establishment of the earthly kingdom of Jesus Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. Cot.UMBUS' ENTtll£ WOil.LD VIEW was firml y grounded upon these biblical teachings a bout geography and eschatology. He believed espe- cially in the prophecies concerning the climax of world history and the personal rctum of the Lord Jesus Christ. He believed that Christ's re- turn and tbe fonnation of His uni· venal kingdom could not take place until aU nations and tribes of the distant isles had been evangelized. Only then could the promised new age come into being. Columbus believed that his own name, given 10 him in holy baptism, was a special sign that God had pre- destinated him to be the evangelist (Cbristophoros-Christ·bearer) who would open up the un rcached tribes of the "distant isles" to the saving knowledge of 1he Gospel of the ---....~·I-... - -.. Lord Jesus C hrist. He that the Holy Spirit had given him spe- cial assistance in understanding both the Scriptures and the sciences of navigation and geography re· qui red for his life's mission. THE FOLLOWING QUOTATIO NS teU the story in Columbus' own words. They arc translated fr om the fif~ teenth century Spanish of the in- troduction to the Book of Pro - phecies: "At a very early age I began to sail upon the ocean. For more than fony years, I have sailed every- where that people go. "I prayed to the most merciful ~Qrd about my heart's gr eat desire, and He gave me the spirit and the intelligence for the task: seafaring, asuonomy. geometry, arithmetic. skill.ln dn.fliag spherical maps and placing correctly the cities. rivers, mo untains and pons. I also studied cosmology, history. t:hi-onology and philosophy. "lt was the Lord who put into my mind {I could fee l Hi s hand upon me) to sail from here to the Indies. All wh o heard of my project re· jected it wit h laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the in· spiration was fr om th e Holy Spirit. because: he comforted me with rays of marvelous illumination from the Holy Scriptures. a strong and clear testimony from the 44 books' of the Old Testament. from the fo ur Gos- pels. and from the 23 Epistles of the blessed Apostles, encouraging me continually to press forward. and without ceasi ng for a moment they now encourage me to make haste . "Our Lord Jesus dem ed to per· form a very obvious miracle in the voyage to the Indies, to comfort me and the whole people of G od. ·J spent seven years in the royal court, discussing the matter with many persons of great reputation and wis~ dom in all th e arts ; and in the end they concluded that it was aU foolishness, so they gave it up. But since tbings generally ca me to pass that were predicted by our Sa- viour Jesus Christ, we should also be~ lieve that this particular prophecy to pass. In support of this, In a World Like This l4i • I offer the gospel text, in which Jesus said that aU things would pass away, but not his mar- velous Word. He also affirmed that it was necessary that all things be fulfilled that were prophesied by h.Jmself and by the prophets. ••J said that I would state my rea· sons; I hold alone to the sacred and Holy Scriptures, and to the inter~ pretations of prophecy given by cer- tain devout penons. "It is possible that those who see this book will accuse me of beina unlearned in literature. of being a layman and a sailor. I reply with the words of Matt. 11 :25: 'Lord, be~ cause thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hut revealed them unto babes.' "The Holy Scripture testifies in the Old Testament by the prophets and io the New Testament by our Redeemer Jesus Christ, that thi.s world must come to an end. The signs of when this must happen are given by Matthew, Mark and Luke. The prophets also predicted many things about it. ··our Redeemer Jesus Christ said that before the end of tbe world all things must come to pass that had been written by the prophets. "The prophets wrote in various ways. Isaiah is the one most praised by Jerome, Augwtine and by the other theologians. They all say that Isaiah was not only a prophet, but an evangelist as well. Isaiah goes into great detail in describing future events and in calling aU people to o ur holy catholic faith. "Most of the prophecies of Holy Scripture have been fulfllled at~ ready .... "I am a most unworthy sinner, but I have aied out to the Lord for grace and mercy, and they have covered me completely. I have found the sweetest consolation since I made it my whole purpose to en- joy His marvelous presence. ••For the execution of the journey to the Indies I did not make use of intelli, ence, mathematic:a or maps. It is sunply the fulfillment of what Isaiah had prophesied.2 All this is what I desire to write down for you in this book. .. Her words are ironicai. She uya, .. How is it that thou. being a Jew, ukest ·drink of me, which am a wo-- man of Samaria?" Therefore, the evan~elist comments with thHe words, "For the Jews have no deal~ ings with the Samaritans." In this connection it should be pointed ou1 that the inhabitants of Samaria were of a monKfel race. It is sultHted that reference be made to 2 Kings 17 :24-41 for the oriRin of the Sa- m.ariunt, and thus one will rudily tee why the Jews did not mix with them. JESUS' DECLAitATION THAT HI COULD IESTOW LIVING WATEI Veraet 10-12 are aa follows : "Je- sus answered and aaid unto her, If thou knewest the aift of God, and who it ia that uith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldeat have uked of him, and he would have civen thee living water. In his a.nsw~ tO the worn.an of Samaria, Je- aua auctesb that abe bad a need which waa very rrut. Such a oeed Jesus Himself wu abundantly able to supply. Here the comment o£ Drs. Milligan and Moulton ia relevant "The 'gift of God" ia probably not difh:rent from the 'living water' aftu~ wards mentioned. John himself gives VI explanation of _the latter in c:hap- te~ 7 :3Q, and hit inte'}!retation must be applied here al&a. LivinR water,' then d~otes the &ift of the Hoi)· Spirit.
