Local firm wins, at last ' • " ' *REMEMBER 'WAY BACK WHEN , •• For nostalgic remembrance of Old New- port, read the aeries ot articles by Francis Horvath beginning In this week's Ensign. Mr. Horvath Ia writing with a background ot almoat 30 year• ot residence, and active Involvement In the civic, political and busi- ness activities ot thla community .In these weekly article•, oldtlmers will recognize many famUiar names ot pioneers, Includ- Ing themselves, who bave played a r ole In the history ot our city. Comments are Invited • • • • * RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR The New Year's Log ot a year ago suggested that tackling the Inflation prob- lem would be an excellent subject 1or a resolution for 1972. Now tbat 1972 Is past, It appears that the Log's suggestion did not meet with overwhelming success. But still It bears repeating for 1973. Wbat can you as an Individual do about It? You can recognize the fact tbat Inflation can be stopped only by cutting federal spending below the lnc~e l~v~l •. T,hen you can stop going to your clfy council- men and county supeMi."ors and yciur representatives at the state and federal level to ask for financing tor your pet local schemes. And you can stop voting tor those who continue the spending spree that Is pushing our nation toward bank- ruptcy. The Log ot 2 years ago tared con- siderably better. Tbat Log was a "happy 1971" message ot congratulations to the Newp ort Beach Freeway Fighters. The old year had closed on a note of success because ot the successful campaign to put the freeway Issue to the vote of the local citizens. A few months later came the overwhelming decision at the polls to keep the freeway bulldozers out of our city. The suggestions In the New Year's Log of 3 years ago are worthy of repeti- tion. Here are some action resolutions tbat can help save our country: Attend a Bible believing church every Sunday; read through the Bible during the year • • • Read at least one Amerlcanlst, conservative book each month . . • Sub- scribe to conservative magazines and · pertodlcals • • • Listen to conservative commentators on TV and radio . . . Support our local pollee against the r evo- lutionaries who seek to destroy respect for law and order ••• Defend our schools against those who aeek to undermine our cbUdren with pornography, drugs, sensi- tivity training, immoral sex education and permlaBive•nea• . • • Support candi- dates who stand for law and order, private enterprtee, patrtottem, morality, and de- fenlle of our country and c01111tltutlon agalnst all enemies, foreign and domestic , • • Read the Newport Harbor Ensign. That Log concluded '~nth thl• comment: Do au these, and you too can be what the left cal18 a rieht wtng extremlat, wbicll, belDC Interpreted, Ia a Chrlattan AmerlcaD patriot. Be- fore joining the Browns he pl~yed with the Saskatchewan Roughnders and with the Detroit Lions. Though· Bill Glass hun'i worn professional football gear in four seasona. he still is a hard-hitting player. As bead of the BiU Glass Evangelistic Association. he's hitting millioru of people a year with the masage of Je~us CMst. He spares no punches. And hil teammates of· ttn lnclude such albtan u Roser Staubac:b. Ban S1arr and Bobby Ric:bardJon. Was it hard to leave the gridiron glamoi. ':' for the evangelistic trail? "Not really," Bill says honestly."( bad been playing twelve years and wanted to quit while I was still at my peak. 11 was obvious where the Lord was leading and I knew what I ought to do." When' Bill realized God's call to full-time evangelistic work, be was prepared to move in God's direction. In fact, he was already ~uipped with seminary educatio n. G01ng one temester a year during off seasons to Southwestern Theological Seminary, he completed the three-year pro- Jf&m in six yean. Bill put his train- IDS imr:nediately into pr~~tice . While wuh the Browns he 1ruuated team chapel services and saw leV· era! teammates come to Christ. Until his teen years, football took top priority in Bill's life. In their home town o f Corpus Christi. Texas, Bill's older brother Vernon became an outsumding quarterback. "But I was like a puppy with over- grown hands and feet." says Bill. "and I could tell I wouldn't be a quarterback.'' Bill d iscovered, howevtr, that his large hands and feet were important as a defensive player. He could al- ways tackle with those hands, and he was tough·to block. By seventh grade he, too, was playi ng football. But football was not to be the only force in his life. Bill joined a church at age twelve. ""There I began to know a lot of "Christian kids. I knew they had something and I didn't." he says. BILL RELATES THE STORY of h1s con- version in football terms "I have found that I must play fair with myselr, with others and with God. This is the only way to win in life. I chose to play fair with God when I got on the team of His Son. Jesus Christ. "'When I was about sixteen. I came face to fa ce with one whom I could not sidestep. "He said to me. 'I am the way. the truth, and the li fe . No man cometh unto the Father excep1 by me.' "It's like playi ng ddensive end for the Cleveland Browns. Usually when I charge across that defensive line either a tackle. an end o r a back hits me. As I look up I ste a 260-pound guard plunging toward me. His teeth are gritted, his head wags fr om side to side as he charges. I know he doesn't intend to do me any good. I know he intends to run over me and. iJ he can. knock me flat. And if I did the thing I really wanted to, I'd side-step that guy to the oulSide. "If I'm perfectly honCst w1th you, I don't really want to face all that power head on. But if I Sidestep to the outside. he bumps me out a liltle further. and the back cuts to the in - side and they make a lot of yards. On the other hand. I could sidestep him to the inside. But if I do, he'll cut me in and the back will cut to the out- tide and again they'll make a lot of yarcb. So the only thing that I tan do is tbatmoet painful, that matt bone· lhakill&ldndorlhing; lhatiJ, ra<:< lhe bl& guard bead on. Now, that's not comfortable! "The trap play is an awfully tough play to stop. The on I>' wa>' to do it it to face it head on, nght m the mid- .--dle. .. Wb.~n Jesus said to me. 'I ~m the way, the uuth, and the life; N'o man comes to the father except by me.' I didn't want 10 face Him head on. I wan led to aida\ep Him to-the out- aide a.od say, 'I'm not 10 bad. Your way shall be my way. Your cause shall be my gause. I will serve you aU the days of my life.' " Soon after his salvation Bill began discoverin& the spiritual gift that characterizes his ministry today, tht gift or evangelism. '"The Scriptures say every believer has a spiritual gift," BUI explaina, "and I feel I have the Jilt ohvanpl· ism." He discovered lhia gradually. "I had no flub or liptning say- ing this is what 1 am to do," Bill says. "But over the years I bad a growing awareness. At first I gave my tetti· mony and people responded. Then I spoke il little longer. and more peo- ple responded. Gradually I began preaching in several churches. Then I began conducting crusades ..,bile with the Browns. There was no day I woke up and said, 'I'm going to be an evangelist.' In fact I wu probably more surprised than anyone else that God led in this direction.'' During his last three years with the Browns Bill launched his city-wide crusades during off seasons. These crusades became another step in God's leading Bill in to full-time e:vangelism. "I knew this wa s God's will." Bill verifies. "I had enjoyed twelve years of ball, a good stepping .stone to .;ovangelism because some people li.s- ten to what a pro has to say. Then I felt the 1nner ltadmg of the Holy Spirit and had sttn God's blessing o n the crusade work ... Now CONDUCTING ten city-wide crusades a year. Bill Glass's minimy still exhibits evidence or God's bless- Ing. His most recent eight-day cru- sadt in Madison. Wisconsin. resulted 1n more than seventeen hun- dred decisions, most by teens and college students. While Bill was in Madison. ex· tremis ts from the University of Wis- Devotional coruin threatened bit life to tuth a ~egrec ~~the mayor requested po- hcc aec:unty. .Recently the.. The prilonen hooted. laughed, ridi~uled. Several walked out, then returned; othen rduaed to stand during the ~ymn-aingi.na. yet they atayed, brav- Ing an unnpected cold north wind. Later, the convicts explained their action ... We didn't want nobody preacbin' at us," explained Dave C., serving his second term for armed robbery. "We've been preached at by everybody. But we wanted to tee the karate guy and listen to Bill Glats talk about football. But after that fint night we just wanted to hear more about God." . .. It really meant a lot that Bill Glut and hit men cared enough to come and stay with us," said a young black man with bulging musde1. The men in Marion respect mul-- and power. What they aaw in the Bill Glatl team impressed them: Paul Andenon, the world'sttronaat 4 man, lifted ten inmates on his shoul· .den and , "I'm called the man in world and I every day." Mike Crain. a karate and judo ex- ' broke a three-hundred jound of ice with his bare han while ~~~:;~~ "There are all .kinds of power, black power. power, but the only powu really can make a difference in your life is Jesus Christ.'" Bill Glass asscrribled an all-star team of Christian athletes-Bobby Richardson of the New York Yan- kees, Bart Starr. Roger Staubach, and Jim IC'.mg and Clifford Ray of the Chicago Bulls. More than two hundred made de- cisions. One con expressed the pri- son sentiments most eloquently, "Now. I'm free . With Jesus Christ I'm more free than the guards who go home at night." Bill devotes a good share of his time and his influence to counteract what he calls the "negative innu- ence" of some players such as self- proclaimed playboy Joe Namath. Bill Glass never was subtle at a crashing defensive end. and he is equally hard hitting 1n his stance for biblical morality. In his latest book. Dor~ 't Blame the Game published by Word . he underscores his stance by giving an answer to superstar swi ng- ers. Bill Glass may be retired from pro football, but he hasn't turned in his shoulder pads and cleats as an ag- gressive member of God's team. He hasn't softened his conviction that peo ple of all ages need to hear that God loves them and has a place for them m H1s plans. Bill Glass speaks from conviction. He's experienced that love and now is involved in God's plan. The Enapl., P. 0. Rca: 16.
