A good share ot the blame can be placed on the Hinshaw legacy of. booet- lng the assessed valuation of. property, especially here in wealthy Newport Beach. Of course it is called by another name in our "new-speak" language; lt's known as "equalization," which Is just as miJI- leadlng and painful as the politicians' favorite gimmick of "tax reform," which is no r eform at all, but just a shell game: Now you see It here, but In real- ity the tax has shUted to there, and there is neither tax reform nor relief . . . the name of the tax has been changed t o protect the gullty. It should be apparent even to a first g rade r that there is only one way to achieve tax reform, and that Is tax re- duction. Newport Beach taxpayers have given our City Council some gentle hints about what they think of the tax burden. They voted down the grandiose plans for a new civic center near Fashion Island, and they rejected the bonds for buy- ing and maintaining expensive park sites. The r e's room !or trimming In the pro- posed budget. Just one glaring example is the enormous jump proposed for the special reserve fund, the 11 just ln case" m oney, which would go up almost to a million dollars. That Is an invitation to extra, unbudgeted spending of our money, which would do more good In our own pockets by way of a tax cut. fllft ..... to GI'UIIL lllr, p •n11 ud Wilt Mew-are r.=,• lut ltn.W II the second molt bMutJtul ·-----Uld 11011 -·---..,,..... ....... ~ to ....... Here is her analysis: "! own 3 lots on Balboa Peninsula. Each one is zoned for 3 living units. Le t's say the lots are worth $150,000. Al ong comes the city to tell me I can only build single-family residences on these l ots, Now, on the real estate mar- ket, they're worth only $75,000. That's inverse condemnation --and that's un- constitutional." U our City Council persists in this bold attack on property values, then the only recourse is to claim the prolect- ion of our U. S. Mary tum~. and sa.ya to Him in Aramaic, "Rab- lloni" which means "Malter" (\·. 16) Jesus say• to her, "Touch me not; for f am not yet asccodcd to my F•ther : !Jut go to my brethren, and •r unto them, I aiCC1ld wno my Faiber, and your Father; and to my God, and your God" (v. 17). Why thia prohibition ·not to touch Je-sus!' (v. 17.) Jn Matthew 28:9 we read that the women to whom Je- aus appeared held Him by the fcct . Late-r on Jesus really invited TI1omas to touch Him (d. John 20:ZJ). Here (v. 17) it r.hould bt noted that the Lreek verb means ''Cling not to Mt" or its equivalent "Keep not thy tO\lth upon me." ln .this connection i·t is intereleiDr to read the comments of two devout scholars of the lut century: "Mary would have held her Lon:t fast wlth the grasp of earthly friendship and lo\·e. She: needed to be taught that the season for such bodily touching of the Word of Life was past. But, as it pa.ssed, the disciples were not to be Jef.t desolate : the snton for another touching -deeper, because ipi.ritual -began. jtsus would return to Hil Fathu and would send forth His :o;pirit to dwell with His discipl~ Then they should see Him, hear Hlm, handle Hiim , touch Him, in the only way in which He can now be teen and heard and handled and touched. Tn a true and Jiving fakh they [the dis· ciplet J shall embrace Him with a touch never more to be withdrawn or interrupted." ( cf. William MiiDpn and William F . Moulton, Tht GosJ'rl Acto,.ding lo Joh", 1883, p. 409.) In John 20:18 we read: "Mary Mag<lal<n< o>mo~h and tdktk m. di•· ciples, I have aeen cbe Lord; ud that he had said these things unto bet" (Am~rican Standard Venion). Thw, the risen Lord's appearanor to Mary Magdalene was a notable one. Mary indeed brought to the di~eiples the tidings which •he had received from Jesus. With such a gloriow meua_ge concerning J etUt and -thr reaurrection, Mary Magdalene prep&red the di•- cipleos who were to be greatly blcaed by revelations of the Lord. So thete sa111e men rtally believed that Jt~w arose from the g:rave. The great fact of the bodily resurrection of Jeaus is trnly the crowning miracle of the New T~ment. • Of Strength God .. id to Jo.hua: "Be stronc •nd vt~ry cour•ceou." iJo•b. 1:6 , 7, 9). FLOWER SHOW APRIL 27 -MAY 7 RESORT- OR HOMETOWN? For the past 20 years, those of us who have lived here awhile have tried to make Newport Beach a residential town by letting it grow and progress in a natural way. Now, the planners think they can tell us what's best for us, and what they apparently think is best for us, is to turn Newport back into a resort town, with more and more open space and cars. These planners remind me a little bit of a fellow named Hitler. Remember when he tried to plan the whole world according to his design? Let's look at some examples of planning during the past 20 years here. Start at 22nd St. and Ocean Front, where a permit turned the area into the worst tenement since the Indian wigwam. Then, after we leave the Mustard Tree, let's go up Seashore Dr. and look at the results of what was called "planning" 20 years ago. As a contrast, look at the greatest improvement on the Peninsula for many years --the Marinapark mobile home park, which was put there through the efforts of a hardware man and a newspaper. It's the showplace of the Peninsula. Now, the "planners" want to get rid of this showplace, which will provide $100,000 in revenue to the city this year, and replace it with what will be a 60-day nightmare of tourists and cars in summer and a seagull roost the rest of the year, Let's progress toward a permanent city, and get away from this annual 60-day locust invasion. Only the planners and politicians are talking about resi- dential density --not the people. If these guys don't like it here, why don't they move ? Now, a message for the lady who called about the police helicopter. I've checked with Mayor Mcinnis and Chief Glavas. It won't fit. Down at the store, we have shovels, rakes and hoes. If you want to dig at the beach or deposit your pollution some- where else, come in and talk it over. AL FORGIT -.;---- tHIIOUTMLMUfS "MIST • MAJ:OWAII: • COLOMV PA.IMTJ • SMALL APPLIAMCU e "-UIII ..
