given a roommate, and later an-
other. Afte r late 1969 condition.'l. in

pression. I found ;;orne of the Chris-
tian fellows in a cri~i~ of faith. They
had prayed and a~ked fo r deliver-
ance. and it didn't com e. They began
to lose their trust in God. My own
feeling, wttich I tried to convey to
them, was that God hu hi$ own
time and h is own way of answering
ou r prayers. Ju!lt because something
may ~eem pres.:dng to u:o:. it might
not be to him. We have to accept
I f you want to understand what
Jesus Christ means to me, come
with me to the "Zoo.'' That's the
name we gave to the pril«>n where
about two hundred of us Americans
were confined in Hanoi. I spent six
and one-half year~ there M a pris-
oner of war of the North Vietna-
mese.
In the "Zoo" several buildings
were enclosed by a concrete wall
covered with barbed wire and chipped
gl&.'is. Each of the buildings con-
tained a number of cells. Upon cap-
ture in 1966. I was taken intt~ a
build ing with small ceiiR. l'lix feet by
l-lix feet. with ceilings about eleven
feet h igh. The POW'R called it
"Heartbreak." Each cell had two
concrete bunks. At both e nds of the
bunk were iron bar s worked into
the concrete that could serve a..~
;;tocks to hold feet and hands. l

in solitary confinement.
Did Chri~<l come with me into that
cell? Ye['l. he did. The concept I had
of ChriRt in that pr ison is the same
t hat I have today. He is a Com-
forter, he is a Friend , he i~ a Savior.
He is with you no matter where you
are, and his words and promises are
truth. I held then. and I hold now.
that if we sincerely believe in C'hrist.
and li ve for him, we have eternal
salvation.
Furthermore, f think that the per-
son who truly walks with God can
feel the H oly Spirit within him ev-
ery day and hour and minute. No
matter what difficulties we have-.
God is with us. Once we have done
all we can, he is there to shoulder
the rest of the burden. I believe the
Script ure that says if we have faith .
all things are possible. That beli ef

Torture was a way of life in the
"Zoo." The North Vietnamese sub-
jected me to repeated interrogation
during the first five months. and
less fr'O!Quently afterward. Some-
tim~ they beat me with ·their fisl<~
and kicked me. Sometimes they tied
me tightly with ropea. Sometimes
they sat me on a very small ~tool.

requested them, but not until Christ-
roM ot 1967 were we given one.

able to everyone if he will accept
Christ, believe in him, and follow
his teachings. I also emphasized the
point that it wa..'l not enough to be -
lieve in God and sit around and not
serve him. There is a great need to
live the faith and not just talk it.
Sunday religion may be fal-lhion-
able, but it won't work.

This Watergate stink should prove once and for all the
fallacy of the committee system of government. We see
the daily spectacle of a country hick lawyer playing the
"boob tube" for all it's worth. This is called a committee
"investigation."

The sad part of this Roman circus is the cost to the tax-
payers.
Bugging is just a cheap word for spying. Nations, parties
and even sports teams have spied on each other for
centuries. If there have been laws broken, why not take
the advice of the man who has been named to legally in-
vestigate the whole affair. He says stop the circus and
let's get on with the legal investigation and whatever pro-
secutions, if any, are called for.
Instead, we see this daily circus. It brings back unfond
memories of Castro's mass "trials" in the Havana stadium,
or the Nazi pogroms that sent Jews to their death without
due process. It's prosecution by the boob tube.
Speaking of committees, the Committee for Re-election
of the President operated as most committees do: They
go off in 40 different directions without telling anybody
what they're doing.
This Watergate fiasco is supposed to be some kind of
big expose. The only worthwhile thing it has really exposed
so far is the folly and idiocy of the committee system.
How much longer will you, the public, allow this costly
"investigation" comedy to continue? I know our dollars
are cheaper now, but they can't be THAT cheap.

American merchandise in the deal, stop by the store, We'll
