I can hear the cry of rebuttal already: "But we can't afford to do it without that free federal cash!" The answer Is obvious: If we cannot afford to do it by ourselves, we have no business trying to undertake such a super-expensive pro- ject. It Is preposterous folly for wealthy Newport Beach to reach a begging hand to bankrupt Uncle Sam, who is almost a half billion dollars in debt, and going m deeper every hour, thus continuing to generate the fearsome inflation that is picking the pockets of all of us. A request for federal funding of policing equipment Is a perilous Invi- tation to federal encroachment Into the field of local pollee authority. The fact that federal control follows federal funding is s o obvious that It need not be argued. Equally obvious is the fact that there is a relentless and continuing drive to con- centrate more and more power in the fed- eral government, and the lure of urree money" Is being constantly dangled before local officials as bait for accepting federal controls. The local pollee force is a particularly important target of the "big government" boys, who would like to see the local police enticed into becoming part of a federal pollee organization. A federal pollee force is a must for es- tablishing an all-out pollee state. Let's stand by the slogan: "Support our local pollee --and keep them local." -Ll MO meDCed COII.tructlol. of a 1 ?Z,. Liki Romana it has for its central thought justifica: tion by faith. !kine Jess aywtematjc, however, it does not to readily admit ~~ analysis. Romans is ge:oeraJ, bav- lllf more of the chancter of a trutiae; Ga.latians is specific and is writtm with direct reference to local condi- tions. In this respect it resembles J a:nd 2 Corinthians. Our Epistle (Gala- uansJ .seems to have~ written with ~~ apostle'• own twld (6:11); if so, tt 11 the only instance (with the po!- siblc exception of the short personal letter to Philemon, .KC v. 19). Paul usually dictated his letttts to an ama- nuensis (a person who writes what another says). adding with h.is own hand only the closing words of saluta- r_ion ( ~ 6 : II ) . Galatians is a pecu· harly spirited, and inde-ed, vehement letter. It bears the clearest marks of Paul's mind and genius. Criticism has universall) ascribed it to him. Though apparently written without conscious pi~, it has a striking compactness and umty. Its emphasis of faith and its bold ~rtions of the freedom of the Christian from the law, made it the iavorite Epistle of the Rdormus. Lu- thtt declared : 'It is my Epistle; 1 have betrothed myself to it' " ( cf. George B. Stevens, A Shtwl Exposititnt of •Ju Efli.stle to IM Gal41iGJU, 1890, pp. 2, J)_ tAbJy ptO\'Oic-ed, that it WU likely to lead to arelesant:S~ of monaJ dittinc- t'?ns ; but his rc:al intett:st is to show hts connrts what this Christian life: is like, this life that can rest oa no other foundation than ju.tification by faith. It is a life that mult be at ooc:e fftle an~ hoJy, for it is a life of love tn- spl~ed by the: Spirit of the holy and lovmg God. Whc::n men receive the salvation which is by faith in Christ the Spirit of God becomes the new Ji(~ principle within them ( 1« J :3 ), and 1f they give free play to this inner iD- tluc:ncc: _they arc: u.fquarded againlt the dom1nance of evil impulses. Free- dom is not freedom to do u you like but frenlom to do deeds of lo~ prompted by the: Spirit. Thus the life: of freedom I~ to higher virtues tha~ the Law demands and defer!ds on an tmpulse tM Law cannot g~vc:" (ct. John A. Allan, Tll1 Efi,sll1 of Potd the Aposlll lo tlu Ga14t;o,.., 1951 p 81 ). • • - The attention of the: reader of the Galatian ~pistle is now directed to the hortatory or practical ~ction (5 :13-- 6 :18). This portion is taken up with the spiritual life of the: Christian. Ia this connection it is interesting to note the: observations of a rrocc:nt commen- tator, \\hose words arc: rdevant to the: stud) of Galatians 5 :13-26 : "This pas- sage (5 : 13-26J is no mere formal ad- dc:~dum fa thing to be added] to the ma.m argument of the: epi5tle. To it the doctrinal argument has naturally l~d. No doubt to som~ c:xtmt Paul is concerned to answer the criticism his doctrine of justifi cation by faith inevi- ~ outline: of the prtSent lc:uon which is entitled "The: Flesh and tb~ Spirit," is u follows : I. Lberty and Loving Service: (GaL 5 ,1~15) 2. The Conflict Betwttn the Flesh and the Spirit (Gal. 5 :16-18) 3. The Works of the Flesh (Gal. 5 .19-21) 4. The Fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5 :22-26) LIIUTY AND LOVING SERVICE In Galatians 5 :13-15 we: read : "For, brethren, ye have been called unto libeny ; only usc: not liberty for an oc· casion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the: law is ful- filled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if yc: bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another." The: Apostle: Paul reminds the Gala~ tian Christians that they have bec:n called to freedom. However, his (Paul's) readtts should not forget that true liberty implies IC:r"ricc to others. J n the consideration of verse 14, the quotation of the words "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" from Leviticus 19 :18 is significant as l'aul is writing to the brethren. Both men were members of the Sanhedrin. Jo~ was a disciple: of Jesus. It is most likely that Nicodemw was, too. When Nicodemus acknowlcdg<d jesus as "a teacher come: from God,'' our Lord responded : "Verily, verily, I say unto thtt, Except a man ~ born again, he cannot sec: th~ kingdom of God." Here we are civc:n SO!Tl( more specific information. Notice that the heavens shall pass away. With a great noise they shall pass away. If the sun goeS into convul- sions, the sun will certainly effect the earth's atmosphere: and even the earth itself. Isaiah 24 :18-a.> says : "And it shall come to pass, that h~ who Aec:th from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit ; and he that cometh up out of the midst of th~ pit shall be taken in the snare: {or the window! from on high are open, and the foun- dations of earth do shake. The: earth shall rttl to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be: Te - rnoved like a cottage; and the trans- gression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shaH fall, and not rise again." Water Available The main point is not the particulau of what ·will happen when Gorl cleanses the earth. The point is that God can do it even without a special mirack s~cond Prter 3 :5-7 tells Uio : "For this they willingly ar~ ii[Oorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were: o { old , and the earth standing out of the: water and in thr water : whereby th~ wo rld that thr1 1 wa.s, being onrflowed with water, perished : but the hc:ayens and the earth, which are now. by the sam~ word are kept in store, reservrd unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." God had the wa ter wh~n he d..: stray«! life by the flood . He could have created the: water to destroy tht: tarth, but he used what H~ had al- ready. Now God has the fire: available to d~stroy the: earth. How God will cleanse the earth only He knows. Sc-i· enlists who claim that th~ world can- not be destroyed are willingly ignor- ant. Wtth all of the progress being made in · the world, why must we .put up with outmoded government run by inept poli- ticians? Think about tt. Here tn Newport, for example, are we getting better City CouncUmen for $200 per month than we used to get for $50 monthly? I think not. Instead we have men wtth personal axes to grind. They talk about bike trails ...,-tn front of SOMEBODY ELSE'S house. They want people to· go to the toilet in front of SOMEBODY ELSE'S house. They agree that the beach is great --that's why they live here --but other people should swtm in front of SOMEBODY ELSE'S house. That's hypocrisy I Imagine talking about a bicycle trail system that excludes bikes from the very place the kids and adults are headed on their bikes ••• the beach! Okay. What kind of politicians should we be looking for? How about people who have the time, the money and the civic minded attitude to do what is best for the entire city? Who won't stand in the way of progress or of the public good, even when progress and public good means some personal dis- comfort for them. U you had a family business, would you go away and turn it over to an inexperienced housewife who doesn't even have time to watch the store? Of course not. Well, that's about what we're doing in government. Look at the Council. Look at the Coast Commission, another one of those Godawful committees made up of people who are not in any way qualified to control your property. Think about it. Don't listen to the Times or-the Pilot or TV when they tell you whom to vote for. Use your own good judgment and put people in office whom you would trust with your own business and your own money. After all, that's what they're dealing with --YOUR money and YOUR prop- erty. Put some qualified people in oUlce and limit them to just one term. Try it. You might like it. You'll like our complete line of good old American hard- ware. And the folks who work at Forgit's are qualified. You can depend on it. by the store and let's talk it over. ~~.
