By now, just about everyone must real-
ize that our big problem is inflation.
We are painfully reminded of this grow-
ing burden on every shopping trip and
every time we writ!! a check to pay our
bills.
· We all should heed the following words
of warnl,ng : "Inflation Is the cruelest tax ' of all. It quietly picks your pocket, steals
your· savings, robs your pay check. To
check inflation, the government must cut
down on unnecessary federal spending.
The inflation we have at the start of the
seventies was caused by heavy deficit
spending In the sixties."
Those words were spoken by Presi-
dent Richard Nixon. He could have added:

Those who oppose the renewal of the
Lido Isle beach lease present an im-
pressive argument: Keep the beaches for
the public rather than for the favored
few on Lido Isle. There would be no
difficulty In arriving· at a decision If that
Is all there Is to the controversy.
But there Is more to It than that. The
background was given In detail In a tran-
script of testimony published In the Dec.
13 and 20 Issues of the Ensign. The
testimony was presented by R. L. (Pat)
Patterson, who was city engineer In 11128
at . the time of the original lease. Pat
made It crystal clear that the Intent
of the agreement made In 1928 was to
reserve the beaches for Lido Isle resi-
dents and gueste. The original develop-

More businessmen in this town should get involved in how
their community is run. Instead, I'm afraid most of them hide,
anonymously, behind the Chamber of Commerce. Don'.t hide
your identity, Mr. Businessman. Stand up and be counted on
your own! To paraphrase a recent bumper sticker, "Put your
heart in Newport Beach, or get your money out."
When the Chamber of Commerce announces, somewhat pom-
pously, that the latest pronouncement of its board of direc-
tors represents the viewpoint of 1,000 members, just how many
of those members agree with that board? If you will look at
who runs the Chamber, YOI.\ will find that many of the directors
and officers over the years are men who have intimate busine~s
relations with the Irvine Co.
Does the Irvine Co. speak for you? How often do the company
and the Chamber di~agree? ·
We need individual, independent businessmen in our gov-
ernment. What businessman would willingly give up the kind
of profit the city gets from the Marinapark mobilehome leases?
Nobody would, except a bureaucrat or a two-bit politician.
Come on, businessman. Get involved. The town you save
may be your own. •
