A matchless little body of water shimmering as a tur. quoise gem among the gold· hued hills. lt~ tiny oval, 13 miles long and eight miles across, forms t he geographic core of northe rn Is- rael. Jewis h t radition says that God created it last of all the world'o; lakes a nd seas, saving its divine beauty fo r himself. Perhaps that is w hy, in the f ulness of t im e, the earthly family of J esus returned f rom Egypt to Nazareth a nd the lake count r y. F'o r several months my family and J lived in T iberias, on the lake. shore. while I was stationed in Israel with the United Nations Truce S u. pervls ion Organization, detached for !'lpecia\ duty from the Canadia n Armed Forces. We learned to love the hills and valleys, t he s parkling .~ little sea a nd the distinctive people of t he district. Somehow we ab- sorbed the atmosphere of Bible ti mes, appreciating in a new way the human thoughts our Savior must have had when he lived among us here. We watched fis hermen mending thei r nylon nets by the docks; mer. chants chattering in Oriental stalls at the souk or market ; shepherd boys guiding scruffy Hocks over the rocky r idges. Surely these were the lost sheep of the house of Is rael, the very people who prompted our Lord to leave his carpenter shop and to come to the lakeshore to minis ter to thei r s piritual and physical needs . The rugged terrain of northe rn Is~ rael's Hagal il Highlands haa changed lit tle since Jesus , aa a young mu, st rode down to the sea ~rom his hometown of Nazareth in the hills . T he narrow mountain tracks and the more t raveled caravan r outes through t he va\leya are still there, but have been incorporated into a networ k o f good, modern, but s till wi nding -roads. Tra ffic is heavy as today·~ peopl e move about by car. tr uck, bus, bicycle, or on foot . Prim· iti ve a nd somewhat sparse cr ops ~till st ruggle bravely in the rocky hills, and herds of goats often graze up to the pavement edge. All ro utes in t he r egion conve rge on t he Sea of Galilee. The pictur- e~que seaside resor t of Ti be ria~. wher e we lived , is built from the shore up the hi lls ide in three dil'!- tinct layers. Its lower a rea lies 700 feet be low sea level at t he water's edge. making it hot dur ing the sum- me r months, and r ather clammy during the llhort winters. T iberiall iN linked to the Roman era, when it was built by Herod Antipas during t he boyhood of J esus. It was named for t he Emper or Ti beri us Augustus, to whom the city was dedicated. Daily we grasped every available opportunity to drive out into t he surrounding hills , or to hike cross· country over t he ridges to the deep ravines beyo nd . Sometimes we s wam or sailed at the local beach clubs or walked during the cool of the eve- ning along the shore, mingling with our Jsraeli neighbors. Our wander- ings to the south of \he modern tA>wn brought us to half.oeubmerged col- umna along the t~horeline and crum ~ bling remnants of gay Roman villas under the weeds of adjoining fteldt~. Tjberiaa it~ mentioned only once in tha New Te8tament, but it became a center of Jewit~h le.amiq in the early Christian era, and today it Is reprded aa a ahrine city. A few moments before, they had marched to the house of worship, mothers with their well-scrubbed broods following with miHtary pre- cision behind splendid fathers, bearded and robed and wearing great, ci rcular fu r hats. But not all Israelis frequent the synagogues. On the festive holidays we found multitudes gathering along the shore of Galilee to camp, swim and relax. Across the lake, on top of a coni. caJ .shaped hill overlooking the mod· ern kibbutz at Ein Gev, are more broken stones and half.buried col- umns. These mark the site of the Jong.)ost Hippos, one of the ten Greek cities of the Decapolis men· t ioned in the New Testament. The ruins are visible proof that much of the influence of Alexander and his Greeks remained until the time of J esus. Our oldest New Testament manuscripta, of course, were written in Greek. Elaewhere around the lake, off the beaten track and in de- serted, barren flel&, we found lonely ruins of synagogues from an earlier Israelite era, nt;stling among the ancient foundations of towm with Biblical names. Working our way around the shoreline from Tiberi as to the north, we stopped at ancient sites such as Magdala (Mary Magdalene's town) and beheld the Mount of Beatitudes rising from the shore. We realized t hat no other ten-mile stretch of beach anywhere could have wit- nessed such marvelOus events as t hose that transpired over 1,900 years ago when Jesus sought to reach and help his people. We then came to the excavations of the an. cient city of Capernaum with its re~ const ructed portions of a magnifi~ cent synagogue. and the traces of earlY churches built over Simon Peter's house. Today this &rP-4 is desolate. Ex. cept for a few Christian "shrines," and in spite ot energetic Israeli re. settlement projects nearby, the sites of Capernaum, Chora.zin and Beth- said&, the cities where Jesus once called out, "Woe!" remain in ruins. Twenty miles up the road west of Tiberias, encircled by the rolling hills, is the Arab town Of Nazareth. Its narrow streets have changed little s ince Joseph worked here. Many Christians live in Nazareth, and all of the local attractions seem to be associated in one way or an· other with Jesus. Yet t here is s till an air of embarrassment about the town as local residents point out t he s teep cliff south of town t hat over. looks the valley of Jezreel. Here, we are told, the local citizens almost tossed the visiting young rabbi bod. ily over the precipice during one of his less popular homecomings. Jus t aa Jesus left his home in Nazareth one day, so he left Galilee. H is love for a needy and sinful world drew him from the lakeshore to Samaria and Judea, and eventu. ally to a cross outside Jerusalem where J esus the Messiah was to be. come J esus the Savior. We can re· joice-totlay t hat he did leave Galilee. but it must have been a d ifficult ex. pe r ie nce for him to depa rt from this quiet place of blue skieJ:~ and blut! water. And yet Scripture confirms the place that Galil~ held i n our Re. deemer's heart even while he set his face toward the Holy City. It tells us that Jes us ret urned to hi ~ native countryside to greet his di sciples and -perhaps -to take a last look at the beautiful shore before he ascended into heaven. This w e can understand. Having come once to Galilee, we a.l!'tO would li ke to return some day -with love -for an- other affectionate, li ngering look. Science and the Bible PROF RAPS THEORY OF APE ANCESTORS No proof of 'miuln1 link' by Arthur J. Prof. Anthony Os tric of St. Mary's College, South Bend, said that at best it is only a hypothesis and not a we ll-supported one at that The Darw inian evolutionary theory has been promoted by only a few leade~ in a nthropology and human biology, hi! declared, but thl!!! vast body of profl!!!ssionals have falll!!!n in behind tht'!m "for fear of not being declared serious scholars or of being rl!!!jl!!!<:ted from serious academic circles." Also, it is interesting to ob- serve that many famous pauaa:~s from lsaiah hav~ been xt to music, for example, the great oritorio T,t Mt.tsiolt by ~e Frederick Handel ( 1685·1759). .'!''he outline of the present leuon, wh1 ch is entitled "The Vir&in Birth Predicted," is a.s follows: I. In view of the imminent threat of artack from the en~my, Ahaz the kina of Judah was indeed disturbed and tmi6ed. At this critical time in Judah's history the prophet Isaiah came to Atw.' So God's prorn~ of deliverance wu set forth in the presence of the wicked kine. If Ahaz will but tnut the Lord, there will yet be deliverance from a great peril. Here the words of the latter part of vene 9 should be noted: ·'If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established." In order to strengthen Abu's faith th~ Lord offered a confirmatory Jim. God was willinc to demonstn.te His .:~.bility to protect the City of Juusa· l~m. N ~vertheless, since the weak king has already dK:ided to put his trust in AS5yria, he rduscd to seek a s.icn. In this connection the words of Ahaz recorded in verse 12 should be observrd : "I will not ask, neither will 1 tempt (test] the Lord." Here the comments of an able Old Testammt scholar arc relevant : "It sounds It fint as though Ahaz. were piow. Actually, however. in view of the re· buke which Iss.iah immediately pro-· t.:eeds to give to Ahaz, it is evident that the statement is not pious, but is really an-impious evasion. Abu says, 'I will not ask, neither will l tempt the Lord.' What he mean& is, 'l.am not interated in ~ time ovtr , your aJJeaecf aigM. I Want (o. 10 on with this important defense wOI'k.' " ( cf. NDANGERED SPECIE - A lot of ecologists and do-gooders to save some endangered species of our Upper Bay. are campaigning hard birds that hang around I have another species they might be interested in helping. It is called homo sapiens. A number of these 2-legged creatures have been nesting along the edge of the bay for a number of years in a preserve known as Bayside Trailer Park. They have been good citizens and good neighbors. Now, our politicians and administrators are telling them to ·migrate elsewhere. It seems that the "nests" these folks have so industriously built do not measure up to our current political standards for archi- tecture. Beauty, of course, is in the eye of the beholder, but I think those bayside huts look a hell of a lot better than Prom- ontory P oint, Versailles, or some of the other architectural abominations that have been built here lately. And you can bet that the Irvine Co., which owns the land those trailers and huts are on, will build another high-density rabbit warren there if they can get away with it. If the city fathers really mean what they say about building standards, why don't they try being consistent f or a change, and do s omething about some of the corrugated tin, dirt-floor, community-bathroom structures that pass for commercial and industrial buildings in the old part of town ? No, they would much rather go about their business of running good, solid citizens out of town. Pretty soon, all of the boat w9rkers, restaurant employees and other common folk will have t o try to commute here from out of town ..• if they can find a road that leads to Newport Beach. Either that, or we subsi- dize t.!lem and pay them the same ridiculous salaries that we pay some of our city administrators. That way, maybe these folks could afford to live in the city where they work. If we paid them $35,000 a year, they could live across the street from some of the guys who are trying to run them out of town . Well, any day now, we can look for the local bosses to take a hint from the Mexican politicians and come in with National Guardsmen, bayonets and bulldozers and start clearing people out. It would do the politicians some good to stop and realize that, whether a man lives in Dover Shores, in a trailer park, or in a cardboard shack on the side of a hill outside Tijuana, it's his home and his castle. And he has just as much right to live as politicians, city managers, or Upper Bay bir,ds. • • • * T o make your "nest" a little brighter and more pleasing to yourself and the politicians, stop by the store. With some weekend holid;tys coming up, a few buckets of Colony paint might be just what you need. ,., S. CH fCIC U,.
