The attack this time Is directed at commercial signs In Newport Beach, and the predicted result will be to place more obstacles in the way of local busi- nesses to stay in business. A small and very vocal group of environmentalists will be applauding this action, and every effort will be made to convince the City Council that this is the voice of the people. What are the chances of stopping this new encroachment on businesses? Practically none. Not unless the un- concerned public finally begins to realize that this is how freedom is lost --a little by little -· until every facet of our business and private life Is under complete control by government at every level. When the public finally wakes up to the fact that the only threat to their Uberty, the only force powerful enough to enslave them, is government itself, then there would be a chance to stop these encroachments on our Uberty, • • • 1ome o1 them look pretty ,ood, pears to be always on the de-plana oa tben.ocblaclade"clo-their only concern is what's left arter deduc- but others 1oo11: God-awful," feuln, Lut•d of empbaslzing slnc 1D the ctty oflrTIDe, brtoc-tlons. be told tbt hmcbeoo meetlng posttiYe aspects such as the30,-Inc Its comm.WU cloaer IQ. The key sentence is "how we are gov- erned is determined by those whom we elect." Over 62% of American families own their own homes. All we like -ah«p have cone utray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." These verses ( 4-6) of our Biblical text portray the suffering of the Servant, "despised and njected of men." "The Servant's tufl'erings are vicarious (53 :~). He (<he Servsnt J takes the place of the cuJity and dies in thtir stead. The doctrine of sub- stitutionary suffering is taught ovtr and over again in these verses. Is there a greater verse in the Old Tuta- lllent than Isaiah 53 :5? It is the Old Testament equivalent of John 3:16. Let its words ring in our souls for- t"ver: 'But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruiSt'd for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace waa upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.' We may translate the first half of the verse more literally : 'But he was pierced through (mortally wounded) for our transcressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.''' (d. john R. The Submission of the ~ant In Isaiah 53 :7-9 we read: "He was oppressed, and he was affiicttd, yet he o~ned not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers i.s dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judg- ment : and who shall declare his gen- eration ? for he was cut off out of the land of the living : for the transgres- !>ion of my people was he strick.,_ And he made his grave with the wicked, and with tht" rich in ms death; because he had done no vio- lence, neither was any deceit in his mouth." The passace jwt quoted describes the subm.istion of the Servant of the Lord in His suffering, death, and burial. Stc also Acts 8 :32-35. ":[Verses) 7-9. His an11wer was, "Science." When we think of "the conflict be- tween science and religion," we are likely to think first about the theory of evolution. and assuredly there is a reaJ conflict between this theory and Christian faith. But there is a more baaic conflict inherent in the logical extenaion of the nature of the !«!ientlftc method itself. The basis of the scientific method i!l the usumption that under the same circumstances the same cause will always produce the same effect. This is generally true, and for untold generations before the age of scl- el)ce, people b~ve_.been emp)oyinz tl;l.i1 PT.iJlciple in I•rning by experi- enCe. The ch&nge which tbe are of science brought about was that this principle came to be accepted as true in all circumstAnces. It did. indeed. hold true in ~:to many more circum- stances than had been previously supposed that many superstitions were shown to be falae through a scientific understanding of cause a.nd effect relationships. The trouble came when the scientists proclaimed that the basis of the scientific meth- od ttlwa.y11 holds true, and boasted that science would eventually ex· plain everything, thus reles-atlng aU relirion to the realm of superatition. Influenced by the ftndings of the men of science, liberal relirioull leaders MOught natural explanations for Biblical miracles. It was said that when the Lord walked upon the water, He waa me~ly walkinr on a submerged 8&nd bar. When the mul- titudes were fed with a few loaves and fi11hes. it wu aJlered that what really happened was that the people were shamed into brinrini out vict- uals they had brourht along but had concealed until this time becauMe they did not wish to share. Lepers who were miraculously cleanzed of leproty were s&Jd to have been merely dirty and not leprous at. all. The raialnr of Laurue, dead four daye in the tomb, waa too much to explain acientiftc&lly, ao it wu said 'o be merely a made-up story con- cerning the Lazarus who sat at the gate of a rich man and ber~. Such "explanations" denied the di· vine inspiration of the Bible and made liars of those who were eye- witnesses to these thing11. The public ha." been influenced to believe more and more that every phenomenon must have a scientifte explMation. This denies the super· natural aet11 of God. No room is lett for miracles and intercessory prayer and, in the end, for God Himself. The uaumption that every phe· nomenon haa a natural explanation is itself baaed upon faith. and thOH who propagandize the view that sd- -ence holde all the answers tor man· kind are themselves evangelh:inr with an anti-Christian reliaion. Some who do this show such._.Jel).1 that it appears that they ea..'\Dot ~ motivated by an intereat in ~eienee~ but by a diabolical de11ire to-opjo~ the works of God and eapeclaJiy' the atonement of Christ. No intellirent person shou ld allow himself to be "brainwashed" into thinking that thi11 haa been settled by the men of science. Everyone should realize that he has the rirht to decide t or himself whether he wil1 believe the reports of God-fearin1 eyewitnesses of the supernatural acta of God recorded in Scriptun, or the imaainative J.ccounta produced by skeptical men centuries later. Malfing the rirht decision about the veracity of the Word of God ia oi the utmost importance. The !ncar· nation of our Lord throurh a viryin birth and His resurrection were both miraculous, and both are vital to our salvation. Paul said, ''If Christ be not risen, then ill our preaehinl vain, and your faith is also vain , ... If Chriat be not raieed, your faith il vain; ye at'f' yet. in your eina'' (I Cor. 16:14-17). It ia the acceptance of His atonement in our stead, maldnc Him our Lord and Savior, which give& u• eternal life, and this is po.- aible becauae of Hla Incarnation. Ae God incarnate in homan tleah, He alone wu the sinless One who could make the atonement for our ain. LA MIRADA IN A U:CZNT TELEVISION PltOGRAM, a teacher at a liberal seminary which favors the current trend toward a soc:ial soepel ae oppoeed to the r oepel of salvation by wraee. wall asked what he thought to be the chief cause of this trend toward mod- ernism. His answer was, "Science." When we think of "the conflict be- tween science and religion;· we are likely to think first about the theory of evolution, and aesuredly there ill a reAl conflict between this theory and Christian faith. But there is a more baaic conflict inherent in the logical e:rtenaion of the nature of the i"Cientiftc method iteelf. The buis of the scientific method i:'l the a.saumption that under the same cireumat&nces the same cause will always produce the same effect. This ill r enerally true. and for untold generations before the age of sci· eQce, people have T.heen employina- tbi• PJ:inciple in leaminr by experi- ence. The chanse which tbe are of science brought about was that this principle came to be accepted &II true in all circumstanceK. It did. indeed, hold true in so many more circum- stances than had been previously suppoet!d that many superstitions were shown to be false through a scientific understanding of cauAe and etrect relation11hipe. The trouble came when the scientists proclaimed that the baait' of the scientiftc meth· od alwa-y ... holds true. and boasted that Kience would eventually ex- pla.in evtrything, thus rele,.ating all relir ion to the realm of super•tltion. Influenced by the findings of the men of science, liberal reliriou• leaden .t!Ought natural explanations for Biblical miracle•. It waa said that when the Lord walked upon the water, He waa merely walkinr on a submerred u.nd bar. Such "explanatlona" denied the di· vine inspiration of the Bible and made liars of those who were eye4 witneMee to these thingM. The public hL1 been Influenced to believe more and more that every phenomenon mu st heve a scitntiftc explanation. This denies the euper· natural actR of God. No room is left for miracles and interCessory prayer and. in the end, for God HimAelf. The uaumption that every phe- nomenon has a natural explanation is it.llelf based upon faith, and thoee who propagandize the view that eel· ence hold• all the a nswers for man- kind are themselves evangelizin1 with an anti-Christian r e l igion. Those of you who read the Ensign know that it gives fair, objective coverage of City Hall. I don't have to be so objective in my ads. I can raise the roof off of city hall. To the Council race losers --including my girl Peg --I would like to say you all ran a better race than any of your critics could have run. When all is said and done, you have to look at the money spent and you'll find that the candidates who spent the most money were the winners --and the more they spent, the BIGGER they won. One thing I want all the elected councilmen to remember: I have a copy of the list of big campaign donors, and I can pro- mise all of you that, every time something comes up before the Council that would en~ich any of · these donors, we will be looking over your shoulder. That's one good thing to come out of that crazy campaign spending law. We know who gave what to whom, and now we'll see what they get in return. With all of the fuss about somebody wanting to "buy". the election by spending too much of their own money, we found out that Peg, who got the court to let her spend her own money instead of begging, spent less than almost any of the candidates. And she came out of this with clean hands. Sbe diWi,'t buy any- thing and nobody bought her. Can all of the winners say the same? The money won, but at least the losers know they made the spenders spend. We got rid of that ridiculous $500 personal spending limit, but we didn't get the go-ahead until just 6 days before the cam- paign was over, so Peg just ran 5 ads and hoped for the best. She didn't do badly, though. Next time we get a new law written up by the City Attorney, it would be nice if he could explain to us just what the heck he's talking about, so we don't have to go to court to find out. Nobody came close to spending the 25~ per registered voter that the new "restrictive" law allowed. If they want to be real- istic, they should lower the limit to 5~ per voter. Small pressure groups from different corners of . town pres- sured candidates with picayunish quetltions that pertained only to their little corner of the world. And they didn't understand why every candidate didn't have all of the answers. A lot of this must be learned AFTER you get on the Council. * * * • Down at the store, we keep prices as low as we can, and still provide high-quality American merchandise. Stop by and check us out. P. S. State Senator Dennis Carpenter is upset because 3 other states pay their governors more than California does. He SHOULD be upset because we pay more than 46 other states. Maybe he should move. . ~ Al Forglt 1. HOT TIME AT GRAND OPENING - More than 2000 people enjoyed a fiesta feast of barbecued beef and Bicenten- ntallce cream deaplte last aummer'a heat 2.
