TRI-TIPS, fiSHERMAN PACK you• ' KUEHN FOR MAYOR I don't suppose the 26,000 voters who failed to go to the polls a few weeks ago really care about this, but for the ~,500 who did bother to vote --how would you like to have a lady mayor? Lucille Kuehn, who won overwhelmingly all over town, be- cause she promised to represent the entire city, would be an excellent choice on May 13 when the Newport City Council elects one of its members as our mayor for the next 2 years. The only area she didn't carry was along the Corona del Mar traffic corridor, where voters saw no other issue. No, Lucille doesn't have any experience on the Council, but she is a lady with a lot of background in government. On a council loaded with narrow-interest members, her broader outlook would be refreshing. Maybe we could make some progress toward getting proper sanitary facilities on the West Newport beaches, a park for West Newport, a place for school kids to ride their bikes, some action (instead of hot air) on our traffic problems, and a reversal of the "I've got mine, to hell with you" trend of our provincial councilmen. Lucille is polite, sober and intelligent, too, and those are some qualities that are certainly welcome on the Council. She has the time for the job. She's not involved now in any full-time employment as most of the other councilmen are. In picking a new mayor, we should keep in mind that the pre- vious City Council sold our valuable city property overlooking the proposed new marina and took the money to build a new police station the people didn't want. ·We should also recall that the old Council voted to evict Marinapark residents, kick out the American Legion, made a backroom deal with developers, -. and tried to get us to vote for a huge park bond issue, which they later admitted would have overburdened our ability to main- tain the parks. Under the old Council, get-rich-quick developers were al- lowed to pack in high-density rabbit hutches in new areas and build ridiculous wall-to-wall duplex boxes in West Newport, Corona del Mar and Balboa. Meanwhile, old-time homeowners weren't allowed to develop their own lots the way the law said they could when they bought them. Let's hope this new Council does better. And let's hope they start off on the right foot with a new mayor. . . Al Forgit P. S. One other lesson of the last election: We should vote by districts only; then wouldn't have to worry about can- didates spending all over town.
