A peatl!r mass delusion would be hard .. complex," or that It is .. difficult to conl!ol." • STOP THE HARASSMENT Why doesn't City Hall stop harassing local businesses? Why can't they leave us alone, Instead of creating more ob- stacles for the already tough job of rmming a business I The latest harassment Is the proposed sign ordinance for Newport Beach, which has been boastfully described as even tougher than Costa Mesa's new restric- tive law. Local merchants, already sorely beset by Inflation and rising tax burden, are now facing more hardship --a dras- tic limitation on their right to Identify their stores and wares to the buying pub- He. Why this attempt to undermine our free enterprise system of doing business? I have heard no clamor from the public for these sign restrictions, I know of no mandate for our hired help in City Hall, including the planning commissioners and City Counc11 members, to come out swing- Ing against us businessmen. U the public and the business owners are not asking for a crack-down on signs, then who Is? Our city planners, that's who. Look at the official notice, setting the public hearing on sign code amend- ment --INITIATED BY THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH. This attack on our business comes from our so-called pub- lic servants, whose salaries we help to pay and for whom we are forced to serve as unwUling and unpaid sales tax collectors. Why should roof signs be outlawed 7 Why should there be no signs on second fioor businesses 7 Why the new limits on free standing signs? Why the drastic reduction in the size of signs? Because the planners in City Hall want It their way. These "experts," who would not venture to face the Invigorating chal- lenge of free enterprise, want to tell us free enterprisers what is best for us, and then have their whims and prejudices enforced by law. Comments publ1shed in last week's Ensign story on the sign law hearing give a hint as to how the proposed sign controls can hurt our local businesses. "Don't put me out of business," pleaded Balboa's Harbor Inn Motel owner Dave Larson. "I depend on my signs." "I don't understand why they're doing this," said Bryant Christensen, owner of Chr1st.ensen Pharmacy in Corona del Mar. "Where would America be-today without •lens. We need signs to advertise." This attack on our right to do business In Newport Beach can be stQIIped --if enough of us will get our dander up and voice our objections to the City CouncU • But don't go to the CouncU with a plea for a comprom1Be. Don't argue from a position of cowarcllce, seeldng reUeffrom some of the proposed controll. That would please the planner& jult fine, be- caun that's how they win --.a Uttle bit lit a time --each time putting on a f"' more lbacklea • By IUATCII B. The theme of the prophecy of Nahum is the fall of Nineveh, a foremost city and lut capital of Alsyril (cf. I; I; 2:8; 3:7). "The prophet insists on the f~tmiliar truth that Jehovah iJ a jealous God, whose vengeance is certain to fall on his adversaries, but who is a stronghold to those that tnilt in him (I :2-8], urges the people to tum a deaf eat to the counsel of those who were speakinJ ap lnst Jehovah's tarilinea and advtsins the abandonment of his service (9·1 1). declares the unalterable purpose of the Lord to deliver his people ( 12-14 ), and exhorts them to unswei'Ying loyalty to their God and the faithful observance of his worship (IS). On the basis of this truth, the prophet proceeds to describe the overthrow of the worldly power which was then· oppressing the kingdom of God. He [Nahum] pictures the siege of the city (2:1-10), and ta.kes occaslon to taunt the city which had been as a den of lions (11 ·13). Return ing to the description of thC siege, he allribuies the judgment which befalls the city to its whoredoms (3 :14). This allusion leads 10 a change of the figure , and he depicts the punishment as the punishment of a harlot (5·7). He d111ws attention to the fact that Nineveh is not better than No-amon, which ~nt into captMry (8·10),. and he predicts that like No-amon Nineveh shall be destroyed (11·19)" (cL John D. But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shan pursue his enemies." Vef'1CS 2·8 are poetic in character and alphabetic in fonii .. "The theme of this poem is the certainty and th~ aeverity of God'$ vengeance upon the heathen, and it begiru. with a very forceful stat.ement of this fact (v. 2). With cumulative re pet ition, the prophet affirms .nd (e·affi, rrns that the Lord wiU tllke ~Gnee. He (Nahum} declares th.a.t just because the anger of the Lord is slow to gather, it will be slow to diqipa te . He [the Lord] wU/ 1101 at all acquit the wicked (v . 3), bur will hold ttrem responsible and will judge them. It ir all too easy to lose sight of these moral truths. OnJy too readily do men think that, because wickedness is allowed for a time, it is th'erdore condoned. A passage such as this is a reminder that God's anger is dirtcttd apinst all unrighteousness and . that, without repentance, there is no cheap THE SUPERSCRimON and easy forgiveness.· To convhi~ his In Nahum 1:1 we read : .. Year after year, the county and city politicians tell us our tax rate is going down or staying the same, MeanwhUe,.the.assesaor raises the valuation of our property and we get a bigger bill every year. This con game is driving away some of the older people who worked so hard to make Newport and Orange County what they are today. Some of these people, who are now retired on fixed incomes, simply can't afford to live where they have lived all of their lives. It's shameful. We need to get some County Supervisors who will have enough gumption and common sense to say "stop" to the county assessor. If they can't keep the assessments from rising, then they should lower the tax rate accordingly, so our tax bills will stop getting bigger every year, The Supervisors can do that. It will also mean they will have to tighten the belt of county govern- ment so the county can live within the means of its people. It's simple .arithmetic. The sad part of this whole story is that many of the "liberal" politicos, who will spend our money foolishly on social programs, are taking that money from 2 of our hardest-pressed social groups •.• homeowners and the elderly. I'm going to raise hell with the county people until somebody shows enough political courage to put a stop to this thievery. if a person works hard all of his life to pay for a home, he should not be taxed on a value that's several times what he paid for it. Let's tfll the county bosses to hold the line on property taxes or get. out and let somebody else try. AI Forglt P. S. We're . doing pretty good at holding the price line down at the store, and we don't sacrifice quality to do it, either. Stop by.
