endured In launching the Ensign enter-
prise on that Friday the 13th of August
In 1948, I took advanlajfe of my captive
audience to do some sermonizing and
editorializing for the edification of the
Kiwanians. I presume that they are ba-
sically of conservative persuasion, but
just In case there may have been a few
liberals in the crowd, I gave them an
Invitation to follow my example. I came
here 26 years ago as a "far-out liberal
In politics, and an unbeliever and scoffer
with respect to the Gospel message. A
180 degree turn-about switched me from
liberal to conservative, and from a scof-
fer to a Bible believing Christian. My
challenge to the Klwanlans was that If
this can happen to me, It can happen to
anybody and everybody who Ia In sear ::\1
of truth.
The ultimate result of the conversion
from ~!lbe llef Is the full page of Bible
commentary presented every week in
the Ensign. A quote from the first Bible
page, published 7-1/2 years IIJO, explains
its purpose: "A journalistic testimony
of faith that has overcome w1hellef."
The political conversion has resulted
in t:tese weekly messages In the Log,
expialning the conservative viewpoint In
politics and econo:nics and warning of
the disaster facing our !lation If we do
not stop the headlong rush toward the
we1J3.re state.
The burden of my talk was that we are
at war with the leftwlng · philosophy --
call It what you will: socialism, com-
munism, fascism, nazism, pollee state
all ar• of the lett, espousing· the
doctrine of Big Brother government con-
tr<'lllng every phase of our lives. We
are at war --a.'ld we are losing.
The prime target In this war Ia oor
right to own property. OUr property
rights are under constant, determined
attack by those who are willing to risk
their Individual freedom by giving more
and more power to government to rule
our lives and our buslnes3. We are
witnessing repeated encroachments on
our freedom, not just through federal
legislation but also from locally enacted
controls. We are being harassed by
downzoning, population control, coast
commission tyranny, sign restrictions,
ecology promoters, building moratorium,
growth control --all aimed al taking
away property rights without due pro-
cess or just compensation.
These controls are being P.roposed and
promoted in a child-like faith In the
benevolence of Big Brother government.
Those individuals naive enough to take
this risk should heed the words of our
newly Inaugurated president, Gerald
Ford: "A government that Is big enough
to give you everything you want Ia a
government big enough to take from you
everything yoo have."

Especially to an organization called C.R.U.D. (Citizens to Recycle Usable
Discards). This group received an Environmental Award from the Orange County B~rd
of Supervisors for collecting five tons of aluminum beverage cans and over
200 tons of glass. The Irvine Company is proud to have helped this organization by
donating funds and providing space for collection sites. This recycling
operation is not a final solution to the problem. but at least it's a first step. The people
in C.R.U.O. believe the real solution is supporting legisl ation which seeks to
control the use of throw·away containers and educating people to use returnable
bottles. C.R.U.D. is definitely in business to go out of business.

THE ·BIG RIP·OFF
After April's City Council election, I remarked that the big spenders
had won the election and that the guys who donated the most money to
the campaigns would bear watching. I also promised to let our readers
know when the Council takes up ·matters that would effect some of these
big contributors.
Well, here we go. Right now, the Council is trying its best to get
its hands on a parking lot that belongs to state taxpayers, so the lot
can be used for customers and employees of Lido Village. Now, Lido
Village is being built by the biggest campaign contributor. I'm not say-
ing there's any connection between those 2 simple statements, but here
are some facts:
Hoag hospital leases a parking lot just south of the hospital. The lot
. is on property that you and I bought, with our gas taxes, for the old
Pacific Coast Freeway route. Haag's lease runs out soon a."ld won't
be renewed, because the hospital !13.8 a new parking structure.
The City Council wants to take over the Hoag lease. "We need that
parking lot for Lido Village," says o:1e Councilman, who owns a bus-
iness in Lido Shops. "The employees in Lido VUlage can't afford to
park in the Koll parking building.''
The state highway people, who administer ownership of the property,
are being told by the city that the parking is needed for beachgoers.
But, among themselves, the Councilmen are apparently more interested
in getting the lot for Lido Village. There's a proposal to run a tram
between the lot and Lido Village.
I think this whole thing stinks. If Lido Village can't provide its own
parking, for both customers and employees, I don't think we taxpayers
should provide it for them.
I'm afraid the time has come for the state to say to the city of Newport
Beach: "You have violated the trust under which the state has given you
control of the tidelands, and the state is going to take back control.''
It's obvious that the city is not going to provide toilets, places
to change clothes, or anything else for the people of this state. As long
as the mayor and other prominent and powerful people live on the beach,
it is foolish to expect the city to live up to its responsibilities in providing
essential services for the people who actually own those beaches. And
don't forget, THE PEOPLE DO OWN THOSE BEACHES_
I think the state should take over that Hoag parking lot, expand it,
put in restroom!> and showers, build a pedestrian overpass over the
• Coast Highway, and install parkin5 meters to pay for the improvements.
Commercial use of that lot should not be allowed. The city has no right
to make such use of property that belongs to all of the people of this
state.
If the State Dept. of Transportation and the State Highway Commis-
sion let Clty Hall get away with this rip-off, THEY are derelict In their
duties to serve the taxpayers who hired them. • • • * •
We have our own parking behind the hardware store. And it's free.
No rip-off involved. Come on down and see us.

Now is the time to cut taxes, not spend more money. With the possibility
of a depression ahead, let's take some of the load off the poor taxpayer's
back. Use that "windfall" money to cut the tax rate NOW_ ·
