Whose temper tantrums do they Ignite? These are just two of the queries that ery for an answer when locai shop owners try to find some reason for the pre- posterous sign law proposed for Newport f!each. The elusive answer must be that some- body up there just doesn't like roof signs. "Up there" means City Hall, where somebody is trying to play God and telling us how we should run our business. That s omebody does not tell us that roof signs are dangerous to public safety, ltealth or morals. That somebody has \'O business telling us that we should knuckle down to the new sign controls .because it would be good for our business. ~·~o offer is made to pay compensation : to those of us whose property would be · confiscated. Don't get the idea that we have flipped jwit because of roof signs. These ex- asperated complaints apply to the entire . sign law --to the new restrictions on •tze, number, amount of lettering, l,Jca- tlon --all of the new sh,ackles being forged for us in business. The new harassment railkles all the more because our harasser is beyond our reach in City Hall --receiving a comfortable salary, whtch is paid by us taxpayers, playing the r ole of unelected ruler, and enj oying the protection of appointment to office rather than facing the wrath of electors. • Our message is directed to our Council members, wh o ARE elected to office and ARE accountable to us: Tell those so- called public servants in City Hall to ~:et off our backs and stop this constant harassment of merchants and business property owners. We are not being lulled Into complacency by the backing-off in the face of indignant protests at the last Planning Commission meeting. That 1.8 just a diversionary maneuver, familiar to us who have witnessed the tactics of the property controllers through the years. An apparent retreat at this time 1.8 just a breathing spell, marking time for drafting another control proposal -- i&lways 11 for our own good," since they :.know what's best for us, :; Last week's Ensign story about the ·7 sign fight reported: "Planners wtll re- .:.vamp the proposal and bring It back to ·: Jl Nov. 7 Planning Commission meeting." They obviously haven't gotten the mesJ sage, It was spelled out very clearly and bluntly In the petition submitted by Corona del Mar merchants: "We are •alnst any new sign ordinance for New- port." The City Council could Intervene and save us all a lot of time and turmoil -- . by giving Instructions to drop the sign eontrol attempt. It is a dJJJkult phrase, but in view of what is laid of it, Hebrews 12:25-29, it must in lOme way be connected with the kinadom of God and the Messiah" (cf. W. G. This remarkable uuerance seu forth the future &Jory of the Temple. In this connection verse 9 ahould be noted : .. The &lory of this Iauer houte shall be greater th.an of the fanner, saith the Lord of hostr. and in this pliCe wiD I gr.e peace, Mi\b the Lord"" of ·ltoltt.-' Here the QOrnutenU of a faithful expositor are quite relevant : "Certainly it seems that Hlgai 2:9 must refer to a temple not yet built on this earth. Surely the Temple built by Zerubbabel never had a &lory greater than the Temple o f Solomon, neither did the temple of Herod even . poss.tss the prese nce of the glory of God. It seems that this must refer to a future millennia) temple, so fully described in Ezekiel 4047. Not yet has the Lord given peace in the City of Jerusalem. The fact is, it is about the most troubled, fou&}lt-<lver city in the world today, where cluh.i.ng factions murder day and ni&}lt . Jenua.lem means 'the city of peace.' There the Lord provided peace with the blood of His crou; and there, someday, will not only peace be fo und, but the Prince of Ptace will nale , and exercise: a sovereign sway of pace over the world" (cf. W"tJb ur M. Smith, hJoubet's Sdut Notes, 8 lst annual. vol., 1954, p. 323). THE PROPHET'S MESSAGE OF EXHORTATION In Haggai 2:10.19 we read : .. The words of the last. part of verse 19 conatitutt an announcement of grace. These gracioua words are as follows : .. From this day will I bless you." In the conaideration of this passage, the remarks of 1 devout expositor lhould be noted: "In theie words God promised to do that which these people could never do in their owl& power or throu&}l their own hoUneas . U he dries, will he have to call out the entire Marine Reserve to protect his body? ? ? ? ? ? ? How many taxpayer dollars have Newport's cit y fathers spent fighting these s'tupid battles against the county airport? And how many battles have they won? They look as silly as a kid trying to bail out the Pacific with a sponge. ? ? ? ? ? ? Would the City Attorney like to know just how legal his new law against displaying the city seal might be? All he has to do is call Judge Walter Charamza, who ruled in 1964 that the seal belongs to ALL of the people of the city. What we need is not a new law, but a new City Attorney. ? ? ? ? ? ? Also back in 1964, we wrote a very good anti-litter law for Newport. Has there been even one arrest and conviction on that law? Does the City Council know abou~ this? Does the City Coun cil EVER notice what the police department is doing? ? ? ? ? ? ? Why is there such a big turnover in personnel in the Police Department? And how much is it costing taxpayers to keep training new men ? ? ? ? ? ? ? An awful lot of publicly-owned pr operty has been bought, sold, rented and leased in Newport during the past few years. Is somebody making a bundle off of these real estate m oves? ? ? ? ? ? ? How can a man wh o sets his own salary, and who determines the amount of his own pension, call himself a "public servant"? We, the people, are servants. These political "little Hillers" are making us dance to their tune. ? ? ? ? ? ?
