and give your life to the Lord?
Would you come and say, 'God, I

As 1 sat there I actually began t o
think that I was so good I didn't
need anything else. So I left that
evening and didn't make a decision
for the Lord. But at the back of the
Cow Palace I met a. ballplayer named
Bob Speake, and he had a different
minister with him. We went over to
Bob's house, and this preacher told
me that he was a recruiter for
Christ. Everywhere he went, he
said, he recruited for the Lord Jt:~us
Christ.

I said, "Billy Graham was in New
York when we were there and now
I see he is preaching over in the Cow
Palace." Then I added, "You know,
that man is d.r:eaeed up in a nice
auit, and we paued his motel and it
i8 a very niee place. It seems to me
that if he were a real man of God,
he wouldn't have such nice clothes
or live in a nice motel."
He turned around and gave that
invitation to those people singing in
the choir, hundreds of them a ll sing-
ing beautiful church· hymn's. And 1
thought, "If thoee people aren't
Christians, who in the world is?"
And I sat there and was amazed. My
heart began to pound. It pounded so
loud I took both hands and put them
over it to keep it quiet-I didn't
want to disturb all those peoP.le

you wear nice clothes, and you live
in a nice home. Billy Graham meets
important people. Do you think any-
one would listen to him in 1958 if
he were dreued in camel skin and
lived in a tent?" And YO!J know, I
thought about him having this camel
akin on. I hadn't even heard of John
the Baptist, of course.. But that
statement made sense to me.
There were a few other questions
I had to have answered because, you
eee, I believed you have to get your
heart ri&ht before you can be. saved.
And my heart waa a long way from
I watched the people· walking
down that aisle and said, "Where
are you people going? Don't you
know the Lord? Where have you
been all your life?" But I had this
urge to go down that aisle myself
and give my life to the Lord. As I
sat there the old devil came by and
spoke to me. "AI," he said, "you
don't have to go down there. You're
a Christian anyway. You go home to
Birmingham, Alabama, every win-
ter and sit in church in the third
row from the front. You sing all
those church songs. You're good to
I was 29 years old and I had never
heard of such a thing. I thought,
"What in the world is a recruiter
for Christ?" But this preacher told
us how God had saved his soul when
he was 33 years old. He had sat in
a church in Atlanta, Georgia, and
this one Sunday morning the church
had opened up and the man had
looked into heaven. He said, "God
saved me." Saved1 I had never
heard that either. I didn't know
what that was. But I believed what
he said-the man was sincere.

Jn Matthew, chapter nine,
we read of the multitudes
who marveled at the 'power
of Christ. "When the mulli-
tudes saw it. they marveled,
and glorified God who had
given such power to men."

They saw a sinner saved.
When Jesus came unto His

countered a man on a bed

faith of those who brought

prayers, tell him I was a ballplayer,
and say, ''Lord, I'll be whatever you
want me to be." I looked at this
preache r 8.nd couldn't help thinking,
"The Lord already knows me; he
knows my name. I've been praying
to him since I was six years old. I
don't guess I've miS&ed two days
in my life praying to God." But I
didn't tell the man what I thought.
I had never heard a man talk the
way this preacher was talking to
me.
I went home and told God my
name in prayer, and that I wa!l a
baseball player, and that if he
wanted me to do something else, I'd
do whatever he wanted me to do.
Next day the preacher called me up
and said, "1 want to come and talk
~o you.'' I said to my wife, "Shirley,
1sn't that wonderful? This• man's
lonesome for some Southern fellow-
ship. Now while he's here let's us
ask him all the questions ~e've a l-
ways wanted to ask about God and
the Bible."
He came in and we began to ask
questions, and what we asked was
what he had come to tell us anyway.
And we had thought the man just
wanted to be friends because we
~ere from t he South! But every
t1me we asked a question, he'd a).
ways turn the pages of the Bible
and say, "Read right there." And
we'd have to read the answer. This
went on for two days. And listen,
you start fooling with the Word of
God for two days and it will get
you. I began not to like the way I
was.
I EXP'LAINED HOW GOOD I WAI
On the second night I began tell-
ing this preacher how good I was.
But he didn't tell me I was going to
heaven. He kept turning the pages
and saying, "Read here.'' And I
read. "For by grace are ye saved
through faith'; and that not of your·
selves, it is the gift of God: not of
works, lest any man should boast"
(Ephesians .2 :8-9). All of a sudden
the props fell out from underneath
my teet. I was standing in mid·air.
Then the preacher said, "Would
you go with us again to hear Billy
Graham?" I said, "Sure I will." So
my wife and I. we were back in the
Cow Palace, and again f don't re-
member a word that Billy said. But
when he came to the invitation and
said, "Would you eome and live for
Jesus Christ'!". I knew suddenly that
l wasn't right. When you become
honest with yourself, you know
you're not living for the Lord. I
kne w I'd never really made a stand
for Christ. I was n't what God
wanted me to be; so I walked down
that aisle.
I wasn't ashamed any more. I
didn't care who saw me or what
t hey thought about me. Before, I
had kept thinking, "You're a big-
league ballplayer; what are you
thinking of-going down that aisle?''
But that night I had lost all that.
And when I walked up to that altar
there were a thousand people there.
People around me were crying and
I didn't know what in the world
they were crying for. I stood there
and told God. "GOO, I don't under-
stand a thing. I'm starting all over.
The only thing I know about Jesus
Christ is that he stands for truth
and righteousneM, and the best way
I know bow, I'm going to give my
life to him."
I wa8 one of the most ignorant
people that ever accepted Christ in
all the world. We all went Into a
great big room, and I had a coun-
selor, a real e11tate man. He began
to tell me about the Lord, and where
I ought to start reading in the Bible.
And I looked at that man. and he ,
had love and jo, and peace written
all over his face and bt bla eyee. 1
couldn't get over that. And I met
old Donn Moomaw at the· bade ot
the Cow Pala<e, and he had thio
aame look of Joy and peace. And 1

THE LAND SWINDLE
Ou1· state legislators and administrators are doing a lousy job of
protecting the Investment of state gasoline taxpaye rs.
I haven't heard a peep out of Senator Carpenter about Assemblyman
Badham's attempts to give away this tax money. Now, the city of Newport
is about to close 2 deals that are going to r ob the state taxpayer. They
are going to take over a state-owned parking lot just s outh of Haag hospital
and use it for the profit of Lido V1llage shopping center. Then, they are
going to buy the church property on Cliff Dr1 ve and add it onto the 'Cliff
Drive view park.
Now, on this church property deal, the taxpayers are taking a triple
beating. First, about $200,000 of city tax money will be coughed up.
Then federal "revenue sharing fUnds" (that's the s1lly name for money
Uncle Sam takes from you, and sends back after several layers of gov-
ernment have spent s ome of it for administrative purposes) will be
used by the county t o match the city's spending. Somehow, the local
politicians have convinced their county buddies that this Is a regional
park. What a laugh. Next, the state taxpayer, who bought the property
in good faith for a freeway after the city of Newport signed a freeway
agree ment, gets cheated out of his Investment.
So, if you pay city, state and federal taxes_, and who doesn't?,_
you are getting the old triple whammy.
Now, the fine church people up there on the h111 say anybody Is welcome
to view the harbor from that property anytime they want to, and at no
cost. So why don't our city politicians leave the church alone? Why
doesn't Counc ilman Barrett, a fine church man who represents the
area, step in? ·
More than $400,000 in c ity and federal taxes could be saved, and that
meaAs about $1 m1llion before "administrative costs." The state would
still get an income from leasing Its investment to the church. And a
fine church would be able to stay where it Is. Anybody who wants to
look at the harbor from that vantage point would be welcome to do so.
Even the lady who started the whole view park Idea haS sold her home
with Its beautifUl tax,financed view, and moved out of town. • • • • • •
The only view we have from the store Is of restaurant-goer& looking
for a parking place. But what's Inside the store is what counts. High-.
quality American merchandise. By the way, the guys who dole out bus
line subsidies owe me $4.80 for the money I've given to kids last week
who lost their bus fare.
