HMPA, owner Md publisher of tt.t Eflsllft •~~oo~•••••~ooo••~ • DON'T FALL FOR SIGN "DETENTE" A note of warning and advice for New- port Beach merchants: Don't be lulled into complacency by the news that the city's planners are "watering down ... the new sign control ordinance. That's the classic method of placing shackles on the unsuspecting --first shock them with an objectionable new law, then placate them by changing some of the worst features, and thus the still unsuspecting victims are chained, a link at a time. Not so long ago the city staff came up with the plan to put the city In forced- partnership with all local businesses by enacting a business license fee schedule based on volume of business. The re- action was a city-wide outcry am·)ng the merchants against this meddlesome pro- posal, and the plan was withdrawn. There was momentary rejoicing at this apparent victory, but when the shouting had sub- sided, what did they hear? . . • The news that business license fees had been doubled I An objectionable law had been defeated, but the merchants found them- selves saddled with a 1 Oa:{, increase in business license cost. All control legislation is put into effect by the same trickery • • • a little at a time, until our so-called public servants have achieved their goal. Let's not be fooled again with the invitation to "detente" with the planners and con- trollers. Compromise means ultimate de- feat, just as we are experiencing with detente on the International level. The response of an overwhelming majority of merchants has already been given loud and clear: We do not want any change in the sign ordinance. We're all having trouble enough In business during these critical times, so stop this additional harassment. • • • • ELECT THE INFLATION FIGHTERS A Gallup poll has just verified the well known fact that inflation Is con- sidered to be the No. 1 national problem. A disturbing sidelight Is the revelation that a majority of those polled think that the Democrats have better idea.s than the Republicans as to how Inflation can be licked. In other words, the Democrats, despite their public record of voting for big spending, are supposed to come up with the cure for the harmful results of this deficit financing. There Is little comfort In recognizing our No. I problem, if the cauaeis ignored. Cerlainly by now It should be plain to all that our cost of It~ is ~ming upward because of the billions added to the national debt by the federal govern- ment. There is no correapooding increase in the amount of goo$ to be purcbaaed, so these billlona in "pllony money" placed into circulation keep bidding up the pricea. On Nov. 5 we llhall eee U the votere throughout the natloo have the lmowledge and the guts to ehooM inflatloo flghtere inetead of the blc epenclere. We are in blc trouble already; the lituatlon w1l1 be d81perate U the bl& epenclere get back ln. • C.unrmRT VILLAGE Editor ol t11o Eoolp: I blft DO U1 to &rlad In t11o ,....-DolalloJ'a can- _, Vlllap -q,m.,., Aa I prap119 OWMI'ODSlststrett, l 1tu1t to beoeftt from UJ ,.._.,... ol llle aell!llbor--· N-.rtblleu, tYery Dew de- nlqaeat prapoeed from oae IIIIi ol tllo Ballq Peolosula to tllt otber mUll eoatroat the lDdllpW:ablt fact a.t we al- rlldJ ban a traffic a.M l&ek- of-PUtiJtc problem bert, lDd lllot IM8 -lotm Is coll>C tD war-.Ul we .top couidet-t.ac I.....U" W&yl of eettiDc _. tralllc ID IUid start lattDc -IDpt.....,oflloul. It 11 precisely this power wblch humanism 'rraspa: at by law, to take or to IJ*re Ute in terms of Its own decree. eo.s God requ.tre eapUaJ punishment for certain offenses? Very well tbeo, the hwnulst wtll deay the validity of eap:Ual punishment for these offeases. Does the Bible (k>• y the 'rtcbt' to abortion? Then tht humanJ&t will ..:s- tabUsh a 'rlcht' to abortion on his own terms and exe- cute capttal punishment on the foetus . Not surprtsin(ly, there Is u increase in assassina- tions and in murder. Men resort to their own will and their own plaa and set aalde God's law, wbtch ts God's declared plan. They seek to control Hfe apart from God. Man has made hlmsell the arbiter and god of life, and be decides quite readily tn terms of his own torte, who shall live. Thus, in Colorado, the question of eutbenasla, so-called mercy kliHngs, was put to a vote by the Colorado Nursing Association. "Voting in bvor of euthenasia were 173 nurses, only Jl)g apJnst It and 55 abstaJned. A clear majority favored mercy ldiHnl&. What wu most significant ln Colorado was that a debate on the question made the difference. Be- l>re the debate, wtlere arruments were ortered tor euthenasla, only a third of the nurses favored the ldft. After bearln( arruments In favor, a majOrity ¥Oted for wbat only a third had accepted before." ("El1m1nattnc the Old", Twin Circle, June 14, 1970, p. 1 .) More slplftcant than the vote was the atti- tude of these ourses that eutbenasia 1s an opeo. ques- Uoo, one l>r man tO decide or to vote upon . Today they vote in favor of ldiUnctheacedaad the lnftrm; will they ~e to kill doctors tomorrow? Or wtll the doc- ton 'tOte to WI all nurses? U ... can decide wbo shall live, whom ~I they ldll? Uawanted cbildren can be aborted, the aced put to. sleep, all priests and ministers killed, all Commamlsts, Nuts, or conservauves executed, the Jews sentenced to death, or the Germus eliml.nated, all blacks wiped out, or aJl wtlltes: all of these are open questions II man can decide who aball live. All of these have become open questions aa humanism has developed In tbe 20th century. Either God's law prevails, or man's law. 11 man's law is accepted, everythlnl Is an opt~~ question. When man plays god, man himself Is the victim. Under God, l.he doctor Is a minister of Ute, of heallnl. His profession has had a long and necessary connection with a priestly catung. Under humanism and with abOrtion, the doctor ceases to be a healer and a protector of Hfe and becomes a murderer . (Statute law may permit abortion, but Is still murder, DOt only und.er Go4'a la.w, .but u.OO.er CODUnOil law, u doctors may som@time tlnd out .) Under the tnnu- ~Mce of humanism, a radical change is taklnc p.lacP in the medical profess ion . Instead of being a man who recards life as a sacrosanct, as Wholly governed by God and beyond his province to destroy, the doctor Is playlng rod In most cases. But , because the doctor Is not god, he becomes a murderer. The majOrity of people may tavor abortion, but they wUI s till not re- s pect an abOrtionist. Even those pagan cultures wbich practiced abortion freely despised the abortionist. Man created In God 's Image, wtu , even when fallen , renect to some degree the Judgment and law or God. With the increase of aboTtlon, the medical professloo will rapidly decline in prestige. As a hatt>d and despised group or murderers. even the women who use them will welcome the total control of doctors by the state. FE"w will wish them welL SECOND , as we have noted, abortion represents a hatred or lite manifests Itself in a number of ways. from outright suicide to suicidal actlvitif's . It is E'Stimated t.hat 250,000 will commit s uicide in the 1970's, and another two million will try and !ail. ("250,000 U.S. Suicides Predicted During 70's " LOS ANGEL.s&._TIMES, SUnday, June 7, 1970, Sec. A, p. 21.) ThP use of drugs represents a form of suicide and a hatred of lite. Hardin Jones of the Unive rs ity of California has stated that in the U.S "over 100,- 000 young people (2.5 times U.S war deaths in Vle1 Nam ) h.ave been killed by drugs and far more have be-en corwerted into ment al cr ipples .. ("Drug Toll ",' TWIN CIRCLE, May 17, 1970, p. 12) A widE' variPty of suicidal activities are common today. ThP hatred of God Is also the hatr~ of lift'. In his novel , the DEATH OF IVAN ILICH, Tolstoy tells the story of the death or Ivan lllch. a conscient- ious official but a man without faith. As his fatal Ill - ness prOJresses, he begins to hate all people In good health. He bates his wire and children for belnc 50 stronc, clean, and healthy "with all the loathtn& of a diseased body for all cool, while, sweet-smelltnc fiesh." (Henri Troyat : TOLSTOY, p. 559.) Tolstoy's Ivan Olc:h can serve as a symbol or humanistic man and his culturP. As It ra ces death , humanism turns on life with hatred: 1t pursues a suicidal course of action In every realm and stnkes at life w1tb s.avace and murderous Intent: It professes to reverence and af- Or~e even aa It murders It The drive tor tecal- iud a rtlon Is a world-....-manuutatlon of this hatred of.... life. They passed laws that made the plebian peasants almost equal to the rich patrician r oyalty. The Senate, whose halls soon became tilled with a mixture of rich plebians and haughty patricians, became all-powerful. Military victories established the power of this great nation. Writers, artists and orators advanced its cultural greatness. It survived a civil war. A!ter the death of its strongest turn t o the constitutional republic, emperors. leader, there was an attempt to re- and there was a reign of five good ' Then began the decline and tall of this great empire. This period was marked by many political assassinations. During the last 80 years of the empire, heavy taxes drained the wealth of the provinces, as the bureaucrats demanded more and more money. Perhaps even more significant was the way the people, and especially their leaders, turned to wine, women and song while their country went to hell in a handbasket. The barbaric Vlsigoths, Vandals and Huns took over. Well, we're talking about the great Roman Empire, of course, but there sure are a lot of scary parallels to the histor y of our own great country, right? Right. Where does America stand today in her historical development? Are our last days being marked by heavy drinking and wild partying? Look at Wllburus Mills, Thaddeus Kennedy , Bob Badhamus, and some of our many other famous revelers. And, we have some right here In town, too. Even the descendant of that great gladiator, Gene Tunney, has become known as a party-loving ladles' man who misses many votes in the powerful Senate because of his activities. Are the barbarians about to take over ? Have you listened to the latest music? Have you watched what's happening in some of our major cities? Are the elbow-benders of 2oth-century America going to outdo their brethren of 1,500 years ago? We have all of the symptoms, all of the trimmings, and all of the morals of Rome in 475 A. D. All we need are the grapes. They're being boycotted. • • • We still try to run a civilized, honest, get-what-you-pay-tor business down at the store. Stop by and let's talk about the barbarians.
