The tact that this thing even comes up for public discussion ts a sad note. Amerl<:a1i business people have risked their capital, their hard work, and lhe welfare of their tamtltes to provide jobs, move goods and produ<:ls and keep this American system working. American business ts known throoghout the world for Us ellperttse to adverttstng Its products. People come here from all over the world to see how to the world we do tt. Well, one of the ways we do tt ts with signs. Big signs, ltttle signs, plato signs, colorful signs, lighted signs, painted signs. Signs that are lUnny, and signs that aren't. I really doo'l know what our system Is coming to when a group of "social ellperts" start lrytng to tell us whal Is a pretty sign and whal Isn't. It ts not lheS<! eJperts who are risking their capital. It ts nol they who have lo compete to keep a business going. And competition ts whal the American economic system ts all about, right? Whenever government does ANYTHING to reduce competition, everybody sutlers, including the businessman. the consumer and the general public. Now, wben you tell a guy his sign can't be as btg as bis competitor's, because hts competitor has a bigger building, or more !root footage, you are restricting competitioo. You are making tt dtt!tcult for ooe guy to compete against another to business. That's ool right. ll there was some great public outcry against signs, I could see where lhe ., experts" would have an excuse for wbat they're dolne: ... not a reason, but an excuse. But, I baven't heard this outcry, lave you? And, tf there was some overwhelming national security problem or some pressing · social or economic need for controlling signs, tt would make a little more sense. But, none of these coodWons e11st. The one thing that DOES give public offtctals some reason tor controlling signs ts lhe energy crisis. I think businessmen sbould volunteer to tum off their neon signs when their businesses are closed, )1st to save precious energy, U they woo'! volunteer -and awarently they woo'! -then I can see where govern- ment hal a duty, to the national Interest, to require tt. I don't see thai this would be &IIJ creal burden oo bustness, nor would U tarm competltloo. But, to teU a mu he has to tear doWn Ills sip/ )lilt because some bureaucrat doea't lib lhe looks of tho lhlllcl I can't bellova tills II what America, or Boudoir Chair 11og. $U9 ..................................... -'W Feb. 26al the home onlra. .
