City Hall ls apparently ready to go ahead and grant the Legion a 25-year ex- tens ion oo the lease of the Post's city -owned property at 15th St. and the bay. It looks like another victory for the old soldiers and a defeat for the city Parks, Beac hes and Recreattoo CommlssJon, which wanteti to turn the 1.54 acres into a park. But, unllke the victories some of the older Legion- naires may remember. this one comes with a modern sprinkling of compromise and detente. Councilman Howard Rogers, a Legionnaire, is known to favor the lea~ renewal, and Ma yor Donald Mcinnis and other Council member s showed no signs ot serious opposition. Coun- cilman Paul Ryckoff\nsisted on periodic revue of the financial terms. Council- woman Lucille Kuehn agreed. Don Donaldson, prestdent of the Legion's boa rrt or directors, said his comrades are satlsned with the ter ms proposeod by the committee. "This agreement Is a good bleod or revenue to the cit} and a v;eneral publlr u~ ot the facility," he told the Counctl. "It's a matter or the city supplying th(' prop- erty, the Legion supplying the management, and both spllttlng the profits." The city holds the Legion property under a tidelands grant from the state and has leased it, since 1940, to the Leg1on. First step Is gun registration; next, outlawing the ownership of hand guns; finally, confiscation of all guns from the citl·· zenry. These campaigns are being pushed with growing intensity by the ultra- liberals in the U. S. Congress. The announced objective is t o stop the crime wave and t o reduce the number of deaths by gunfire. The fact of the matter is that guns don't kill people; people kill people. When guns are not available, there are many other handy lethal de- vices at hand. U the gun c ontrol addicts are truly interested in fighting crime, they would enact a law calling for mandatory jail sentences in criminal cases involving the use of guns. The utter folly of the gun c ontrol campaign is exposed by a U. S. Supreme Court ruling: Criminals cannot be re- quired to register an Illegal gun, be- cause registration would constitute self- Incrimination, which Is forbidden under the fifth amendment. CoutHlthwoy Corona del Mar OPINION POLL ON CORONA DEL MAR POST OFFICE DEAR PATRONS OF THE CORONA DEL MAR POST OFFICE: We are asking !or your opinion o! the proposal to take away f i rst class status !rom the Corona del Mar Post Office and to e- liminate the position of Corona del Mar Postmaster. This plan, proposed by Hector Godinez, Santa Ana Sectional Center Manager, would merge the Corona del Mar Post Office as a branch of the Newport Beach Post Office, under the supervision of the Newport Beach Postmaster . Mr. Godinez has given the following explanation !or the pro- posed change: "There would be no change in the identity o! the Corona del Mar Post O!fice. There would no reduction in any o! the postal services furnished to the customers. The name o! the facility would remain Corona del Mar Post Office. The sign on the outside of the building would remain as it is, and there would be no change in ZIP CODE. Several businesses along Coast Highway have been interviewed, and the results were unanimous ap- proval . The residents and businesses of the community o~ Corona del Mar would enjoy better service. There would be close proxi- mity o! control ; the Main Office would only be 2.5 miles away. .The Corona del Mar Post O!!ice would get closer supervision. This would provide more flexibility and efficiency would be in- creased. Administrative expenses would be lessened.n The Corona del Mar Committee to retain our first class Post Office and our own Postmaster opposes the merger for the follow- ing reasons: 1. We have had our first class Post Office since July 1, 1950, under the direction of our own Postmaster. We have enjoy- ed excellent local service throughout these years, and we see no reason for downgrading our Post Office. Elimination of the pos1-· tion of Corona del Mar Postmaster woul d mean the loss of personal attention to our local postal problems . 2 . The claim f or greater efficiency and economy is question- able. Experience has shown that increase i n the size of any governmental agency has resulted in more red tape, greater ex- pense and loss of efficiency. 3. The survey mentioned by Mr Godinez contacted only six businesses, one of whom reported at the January 29 COM Civic Assn meeting that no contact had been made wi th the owner. A survey made by the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce and the Ensign Newspaper contacted 20 businesses; definite objections to the downgrading were voiced by 13 of the 20; several others said the phone call was the first they had heard of the proposal and they wanted more time to think about it. 0! the 20 businesses called, only one claimed to have received a letter from Mr Godinez out- lining the proposed change. Mr. Godinez and other Postal Officials have sai d that consi- deration will be given to local opinion. Therefore, we ask you to mark the ballot below, sign it and ma il it to the Corona del Mar Civic Association, P. 0. Box 516, Corona del Mar. Calif.
