D. (Dee)Cook;'tonner Peck's bad boy of the Newport Beach City Council. Dee was paying a social call all the way fran his "ranch" rear Bishop, where he Is happily whiling away his time as a cowboy for a neighboring rancher, yearning not at all for the political strUe on the Council, which could now use his watchdog type of dedication. Les, with whom I agree much less than with Dee, was making his annual pilgrimage to the Ensign In his smiling effort to sway me frcm my conservative point ofview.Nochance of that, because I have been on that left side, and was fortunate enough to find the light that led me to the right. Both Les and Dee always have a variety of Items to discuss and argue, but both get around to the freeway prospects for Newport Beach and Co- rona del Mar, They both have been freeway fanatics for a long time. I guess when once you have been bitten by the freeway bug, it's pretty hard to recover. They are quick to chide the overwhelming majority of voters for soundly rejecting the coastal freeway In 1971. "What are you going t o do with all that traffic caning through Newport Beach and Corona del Mar?" they want t o kn ow, I have an answer for that: One thing we are not going t o do is u help bring In yet more pollution-producing hordes of autos by putting a freeway or expressway, or whatever else they want to call it, through our town. I have a new version of Parkinsoo's law: Traffic will Increase t o exceed the capacity of any roadway system pro- vided for our coastal area. A freeway or expressway would just attract addi- tional cars here, spi!llng traffic over fran the through-route ont o our city streets, and our traffic headaches would be far worse than at present. To both of these freeway champions, I offer the same consolatory sugges- tion: There are some problem:: that just cannot be solved at the moment. Fifty years ago, the dream-world ob- jective of putting a man oo the moon was Insolvable. A solutioo was a~hieved, when the needed technology was de- veloped. For the manent, let's not destroy our wooderful coastal can- mWlities with a ''solution" that would just make the problem worse. But au these people deceive them- selves and make God, wbo hu said "AU have si..Q- aed", a liar. Aside from aucb manifest bllnd lead- ers, there are many otben, even wtthln the cburcbel, who say the same thin&, but not so open· ly. 'Ibese are they who bout ot their honesty and goodwill, who point wtth pride to the fact that they have never been 1n JaU nor convicted of a misde- meanor, nor cheated or defrauded anybody; they have always treated every body fatr and square, sent their chlldren to Sunday School, gone to church and supported the church and her charities. These, of course, admit that they have shortcom. lngs; they a re only human. But what they refuse to admit, at least In their heart, Is, that tbey are :10 better than others; they do not consider them· selves In a class with the greatest slnners like St. Paul who said: " ... sinners, among whom l am chief." 1. Tim. 1,15. ln all this they deceive them· selves, for the Word of God tells the m : "There Is no dlfference; all have sinned .. They are all gone a~Jtde; they are altogether become tllthy; there Is none that doeth good, no not one ... Whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend 1n one point, he ls guilty of all". Rom. 3; Ps. 14; James 2, 11. Tbese testimonies of God concerning man, all men, are true; we are all In the same boat, no metter how good or how bad we are; we are, all of us, lost and condemned creatures. By not assenting to God's ludgm~nt about us In Scriptl..;.l'e, w t.-makt: God a liar; and we deceive ourselves, because we think of ourselves different from what we really are In the eyes of God our Maker and Redeemer . We lm· agtne that we are on the road to life because we are pious and good, when In reality we a re on the broad highway tha t leads to and ends In perdition; for, 1t we do not confess our total sinful state to God, there Is no forgiveness. ECONO MY SIX IMMIGRATION HYPOCRITES We have some hypocrites running our immigration policies 1n this country. We slam the door at our borders with Mexico and keep tt only slightly open to Canada. It's harder for a Mexican to get Into the U.S.A. thar. for a good Idea to get toto the halls of Congress. Yet, we take hundreds of thousands of Vletnamese as if they were our long-lost brothers. Does this make sense to you? Now, long before me and you and our ancestors staked a claim on 'this ground, the Indians were here. What Is now California became part of Mexico. We took 11 away from them. Sorry If that doesn't sound good to you, but that's what happened. So, for many years now, we have had residents which we call Mexican-Americans or "Chicanos." We have also used a lot of cheap Mexican labor, called "braceros," to work our tields. These fellows would come up from Meiico at harvest time, do hard back-brEIIldng labor In our fields for very little pay, and go back to Mexico with a few bucks to feed their families. They needed the jobs. But, some of our own workers didn't llke the competition, so the unions put the pressure on the politicians to stop tbe bracero program. Well, that's the way tt goes. U a Mexican wants io cross our border to earn an bones! day's pay, we slam tbe door on hlm. The same day that thousands of VIet- namese were being unloaded at Camp Pendleton, our federal boys picked up some Mexicans near there wbo had slipped across the border looking for work. Let's lace II. We're hypocr!les. We say we want to help people. What about the Mexicans, the Indians and our own needy people? We say we want to adopt orphans? Why are our own adoplloo agencies having a hard time finding l>omes for American children? Or Indian or Mexican chtldren? We claim that VleiDam has cost us 8110Uih, w!lh all tbe bUlloos we hlfe sboveled down the drain onr there In tbe pall15 years. Then why are we spending another $500 million to support tbe Vle!Damese wbo are coming here to compete for our jobs? We say we doo't want tbem to suffer the ravages of war. Then why were we over there sboottng for all thol8 years? The war Is over now. They are prollably safer In Vle!Dam thaD here. And, have you heard about bow a lot of these "poor Immigrants" are wealthy buslnesamfll and politicians. Just what wo need.
