I had j ust been fired as manager of the Cleveland Indians with two-and.a.half years to run on my contract . It was the thir d t ime I had been dismissed from a job by a major league team. The Giants fi red me in 1964, Kansas Cit y fired me in 1967. and now without a ny warn ing I was fired from Cleveland. Depressed, I went home to Miami. E ven though I knew money would be comin g in for two more year s. it wa!'l the lowest point of my life. I wa.s reared in a Christian horne in Okl.liihoma a nd Louisiana and was born agai,n at the age of II years. A8 a young man I would go fo chu rch, read the Bible, a nd tit he faithfull y. I played shor tstop in high ~c hool. college and the Ma rine Corp~; then started playing profes~ionally with the Boston Braves in 1946. T he more I read my Bible now. the better I u ndersta nd what had hapJ')e ned in my pa~t life. I had never really studied the Scriptu re. So meti me~ I would reM.d three ver:-;es fo r good luck before going to the ball park. mainly because thre~ wa~ my lucky number. I put Aeshl y desires above :;pir itual de:-;irei-1 a nd my spiritual life began to go downhill. After more than th ree year" with the Cleveland Indians, we moved back to Miami. and my wifP .. Jackie. began attending a ladies' P.ible class every Thur sday morning at New Testament Baptist Church. I wa~ s pending my mornings on the golf course because I had decided that I was going to become a good amateur golfer . When we met at home over lunch she told me about the class a nd asked. "H ow about going with me ?" So t he next Thursday morning I put on m y golf clotheR a nd ?.at at the rear of the ch urch so t hat I coul d get back on the golf course as .•won as the class ended . We started attending in August and were assigned 44 chapt.e ri'l of the Bible to read each week. Not on ly would I study t hose assigned chap. ters but other parts of the Bible too. We would take the youngster s to school, come back, put on the coffee pot and start reading t he Bi ble. J learned that "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and ju~t to forgive us our sins." When I reached t hat verse, 1 John 1 :9, I concluded that God could forgive me for all my s ins no matter what they were. The more I read the Scriptures the more clearly I saw that eve ryone in the Bible who disobeyed God fell out of fellowstrlp with hi.m, but whe n they came back were U8ed by God again. Abraham faned but God used him apin; David wu a murderer and an· adulterer but God used him again ; and the same with Peter. I felt 110 unworthy. Bill Had I not known that I was al- r eady saved, I mig ht have felt "Hey, L got saved in September, 1971." But that wa~n't true. because I knew I was conve rted at the age of 11 years. Today I am convinced that God handles ever ything in my life, and my j ob is to let people know about my personal relat io nship to J esus Christ. After we rededicated our lives in 1971 , we started giving a fifth of our income to the Lord. Then in 1974 whe n t he Cleveland contract expired. we no longer had money coming in, so we just made a pledge to the Lord and signed a piece of paper with our promise on it. I had no job and we didn't know where the nioney was coming from . but we ·didn't worry about it. We promised the Lord that we would have faith that he was going to supply. That was in Janua r y. On F'ebr uary 18 Mr. Charles Finley, owner of the world champion Oak. la nd Athletics, called me. I flew out there on the 19th , and he hired me a?. ma nager of the At hletics' base· ball team . Ma ny tim es during the years at Cleveland I ~ot down on my knees a nd prayed, asking for guidance, but I never got into t he Word of God or did what he !laid. Now it 's a natural thing for me to sit and r ead the Rible. The difference. I think, is t his : a dedicated Chr istian who is depend- ing on the Lord has to go to the Bi ble to fi nd out what the Lord wants him to do -so he can do i t. One day in Ba ltimore before a game my wife and l were in the hotel room, s tudying about Christ on the cross -how he wa~ ~pat upon and mocked, and how he s uffered. That night I went to t he ball park and HlhiJdnoJOIJIJnd we dldn 't know where the money WIJS coming from" about t he eight h or ninth inning, a fter taking one of my pitcher s out of t he game, I was stepping down into t he dugout when a guy threw beer in my face. Well , in the years befor e t his, I would have been over t he dugout to get hi m. But because we h ad been studying the Bi ble, how Christ wa.~ s pat upon for us, I simply w iped the beer fr om my face. I didn't even look up. P eo ple a re watch in}{ u.<~ every day t o see if we are l1ving a tel'ltimony. The Word of God is what keep" me on an even keel. It brings me r ight back to m y knees. If young hoodlums were rang ing a bout in packs of 50 or more, derisive toward re- ~pectable adults and ready to mock a well-known man of God, there is no telling what violence they might have in- fli cted on the citi.zenry of the spiritual center of the Kiq .. dom of 18rael (u Bethel WM) • had they been aDowed to continue their riotous course. G•aham Swift, 'The Gospel of Mark " in The ~ Nnt~ Bibk Cowurzentary. ht ed., 1953 , ~ pp. 808, 809). The S.pti:sm of Jnu.s of Nu.ueth Verses 9-11 give an account of the baptbm of Jesus according to the second evangelist . ·~e can readily understand why the multitudes from Jerusalem and Judea, convicted by the searching messages of John , crowded about him to receive a 'baptism o f repentance unto remission of sin s'; bu t why was it that Jesus, the sinleu Son of God , 'came fr om Nazareth of Galilee , and was baptized of John in t h~ Jordan'? Surely Jesus confessed no fault , He wu conscious of no sin ; however. by lllbmitting to the bapt ism of John, tie identified Himself will'l His peopl e, as He did In all His earthly expt"riences, as tk did supremely when »a .-~re ,guf, ~ sins in his bod y upon the tree.' By ~Ia baptism Jesus gave His sanction lo the work of John and set His approval upon · the repentance of the people. "Moreover, the baptism of John was not merely an expression of repentance; it wu 1 promise and sy mbol of Ute pardon and new life which were to be made possible by the work of the coming Saviour . When Jesus submitted to bsptism, He dedi cated himsel f to that work, He accepted the !ask. He decl ared that He was ready to serve , and 'tu gtve his life a ransom for many.' Thus as the preaching of John was a procla mation of the ministry of Jesus, so the bapttsm o f Jesus WIS His ordination to this ministry . '"1llis is made more evident by the two events which immediately follow· 'And straightway co minJ up out of the water, he saw the heavens ren t asunder , and the Spirit as a dove desc ending upon him : and a voice ca me out of the heavens, Thou art my beloved Son. in thee I am well pleased .' The w01d , 'ltfliahtway,' which is characteristic of th.iJ Gospel and occurs with remarkable frequmcy, here intimates the vital relllion between the b1ptism of J~su~ and these two liJnj.fkant even ts .
