U the Court of Appeals decision allow-
ing the city of Petalwna to limit the
construction of houses is upheld by
higher courts, then we will realize that
we have lost our constitutional rtght
to tbe ownership and use of property.
When that is lost, we will have no
security for the protection of any othe r
rights.
The line of reasoning of the Appeals
Court and of 1 'n o-growth" prcxnoter~
is that the end justifies the means.
It is desirable t o lim it the growth of
a city, they say; therefore it is just
to take away the property rights of
individuals without compensation. What
a mockery of justice -particularly in
this time of bicentennial celebration of
our birth of freedom. Instead of honor-
ing the liberty secured at such great
cost by our Founding Fathers, this in-
credible court decisioo nudges us toward
the tyranny of fascism --the fonn of
leftwing goverrunent which allows private
ownership of property but allows it to
be used only as government dictates.
The same bleeding heart liberals wh o
cry for strict controls on construction
of houses are the same hypocritical
pleaders who say they want low cost
dwellings for low income citizens. Yet
they cynically drive up the price of
houses by imposing restrictions on new

FROM THE CROSS
Q. Would you please &ive me the
order of the seven words -.,
sentence$ -that Jesus uttered on
the cross, and their location in the
Scriptures?
A. The first one is described in
luke 23:33-34: "And when they
were come to the place which is
called Calvary, there they crucified
him, and the malefactors. one on
the right hand, and the other on
the left. Then uid Jesus, Father,
for&in them; for they know not
what they do." The second is luke
23:43, said to the repentant and
believing thief: ''Verily I say unto
thee, Today thou shalt be with me
in piradin." The third had to do
with Christ's provision for his moth·
er whom He committed to the care
of the apostle John: "He Silith unto
his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
Then uith he to the disciples, Be-
hold thy mother!" (John 19:26-27).
The fourth cry concerned His re-
demptive work when He suffered as
the lamb of God who was taking
away the sin of the world : "My
God, my God, why hut thou for-
saken me? .. (Matt. 27:46-47; Mark
15:34·36). Some have stated that
these are the saddest words 1n the
entire Bible; they show the extent
of the price that was pa1d for our
redemption and the love of God who
gave His Son for our salvat1on . The
fifth cry disclosed someth1ng of His
physical suffering, "Jesus. kn ow1n g
that all things were now accom-
plished that the scripture migh t be
fulfilled, saith, I thirst" (John 19:
28). The sixth cry may be sa•d to
be the most triumphant words ever
spoken; "It is finished " (John 19:

Q. I heard a Bible teacher say that
the term Mizplih from Genesis 31 :
49 is not a benediction at all al -
thoUgh it is often used as one in
Christian services. Is this right?
A. Yes, it is correct, althou1h the
way it is used is excusable and
means a wish for God's blessin1.
For the origin, read the account of
the trouble between Jacob and
Laban. The word means w•tchtower
and the implication was as some-
one fa cetiously expressed it: "The
lord watch between us that we may
not kill each other." However, I see
no reason why we cannot give a
kinder meaning to those lovely
words.

HAVE WE
LEARNED?
I'm turning over my soapbox this week to a veteran -an old soldier. He fought
with Washington and wintered at Valley Forge. He has a bicentennial message for us •
.,Two hundred years ago, 1 decided to )oin a cause that I felt was really worth my
time, my blood -even my life. It was the cause of liberty. My family, like many
others, bad left the old country to come to America in search of freedom, independence
and the right to benefit from our labor, without the oppressive interference of s
despotic king.
"When the despotism followed us across the sea, we decided we would rather
fight and die than submit to such tyranny. Our leaders set forth our grievances and
our intentions in a document called the Declaration of Independence. 1 understand
this document has become a model for freedom-loving people throughout the world.
,.In this document, we charged the King of England with erecting multitudes of
new offices and sending swarms of offlcers to harass our people and eat out their
substance . We charge him with levying taxes on us without our consent; with altering
the forms of our local government and taking away our local control; of exciting
domestic insurrections; of restricting free trade with other countries.
"My neighbors and myself fought and died to throw off this oppressive yoke and
to correct these wrongs. 1 have heard that my precious America, 200 years later,
is again suffering from some of these same maladies -brought on, not by a foreign
king, but by the otflcers of the very republic we fought to establish.
"( left my famUy and fought a hard war to ensure that my children, and the children
of generations to come, could be free from the iron fist of despotic government.
''1 spent a long winter in the snow so that you could vote and elect your own govern-
ment. I never dreamed that a rainy day would keep you away from the polls.
"I was the first in a long line of Americans willing to take up arms to protec•
the hard-earned rights. We never dreamed that the day would come when Americans
would run away rather than serve their country.
"When Thomas Paine'$ writings helped reveal the capricious ways of our rulers,
we accepted bim as a patriot -oot as a meddling journalist.
''Wben Tom Jefferson reminded us ttat less government meant better govern-
ment, we believed him, and felt sure that succeedtng generations of Americans
wa11ld follow bfs adYlse.
>-we were sure tlat, as our new country grew and prospered, it would have a
cootiDIIDI process of learnlng mQJ't about how to bandle the freedoms that we had
earned wltb our blood.
"We felt sure tbat, wltbln 200 years, America would have learned well t~e lessons
that~ at a bridge fn Concord.
''I am oot so sure tt.t my beloved country bas realized the dreams of the revolu-
tion. I hope and pray tbat there Is stUI ttme to mate the dream of freedom come
