while the office of postmaster remained
unfilled. Now with the appointment finally
made, the status of our Post Office is
settled.
The business owners and residents
of Corooa del Mar have an Important
stake in maintaining our first class
Post Office. There is the feeling of
community pride, plus the assurance

I felt throu&)lout my childhood that
mother and I were fiahting a helpless,
lone war. We were alone in a desert: no
available or possible usistancc could we
look forward to. But our determination
wu never ahaken. nor hope abandoned.
Such an environment inevita~y
moulded the shape of my personality.
Then: is t:anstantly a smouldering fire
burning inside me, although I am retit:ent
in givins vent to my emotions.
Throughout my life, I have always been
surrounded and sometimes overpowered
by enemies; but I know how to endure.
This is one of the peculiar characteristics
or one whO" has learned to work, study,
sacrificc and rely in the end on God's
guidant:e.
And yet. in the long view of what was
ahead of me, a life of hardsh ip was an
almost ideal upbringing. In my youthful
wanderings, I often sat by limpid streams
and watched schools of fish fighting their
way upstream like soldiers advancing
against a hostile force.
In the same way . I concluded, men
have to fight against the odds of life,
often repulsed but never despairing.
Religion was for me, even as a boy, a
source of deep strength for the struggles
or life:.
So it t:ontinued as I became a man-
my hi&h tchool years at Fengluc. and
Lianaobing, my milittry training at
Paoting Academy. and my first momen·
tous meetina with Dr. Sun Yat·sen, who
was to become my mentor and rriend and
father of the revolution to overthrow the
decadent Manchu regime.
I soon joined his secret Kuomintang
movement and began preparing myself
t:onsciously and unconsciously for my
role in the long-simmering revolut ion.
It was during the next two turbulent
decades-checkered with military cam-
paigns, against the Manchu warlords
and Com munist t:onspirators alike-that
I bqan to study Christianity.
I was encouraged in this by a beautiful.
Amerlcan-«<ut:ated young lady, Mayling
Soong·, who in 1927 became my bride
and who in war and peace to this very day
shares my morning and evening prayers
and reading or the Bible.
Sint:e my baptism in Nanking in 1928
by the Rev. Kiang Chen Chun , my Chris-
tian faith has become such a heartening
personal e•perience that not even the
most urgent state business is permitted
to interrupt my prayer period!.
Without faith, we are constantly in
~anger of being overwhelmed by adversi-
ties. With faith , we unite ourselves with
the deep stream of the Eternal's purpoae
and meaning. and are thereby enabled
to accomplish the impossible.
C~ina:s epic defiance of Japanese
domanat1on between 1937 and 1945 is a
striking instance of the efficacy of faith.
When Japan hurled its military machine
upon us in 1937. opinion in the outside
world gave China little more than a few
weeks of possible resistance. But the
unshaken fa ith of my wife and my loyal
co-worken aalvanizcd China to achieve
the unbelievable. The miracle of Chinese
resistance wu prolonaed for eiaht yt11rs,
four of them una~ed and alone, and in
the end, rt was Japan that failed.
Faith points out to us that the one
irretrievable attitude for mat &Ad for
nations i1 the attitude of puaivity and
fatalism. If we ac:ccpt defeat. we beoome

think the people of thta town deserve IUlSWers to some questions:
Was tbe eotlre farce rigged from the begiJmlng?
Did the city attomey and Councnman Howard Rogers lalowtngly
conceal tbe fact tbat the city bad actually fa1Ied to pass the DelaDey
ordinance?
When we pay the city attorney more than $31,000 a year to keep
the CouncU's nose clean, shouldn't we eJpeCt him to lmow what tbe
C tty Charter says?
Has illness become a convenient way for councUmen to shirk their
responslbnttles?
This Is just another Instance of how !be power e!Ue In this city
disregards the people. The CUy Cbarter was voted on by the people.
It Is the law. After tbe Watergate scandal, they tllled the jails with
lawyers who didn't belfeve the Constitution meant what It said. Are
we going to hive to do the same for lawyers who don't take our City c barter at Us word?
The city manager and the Councn have Ignored us In the past.
After we voted o•erwhelmlngly against a new cine center In Newport
Center, they bave gone ahead and buut one, anyway, one buUdlng at
a time. First came tbe pollee "sub-statlnn," bunt ne:rt door to the flre
station. Now they are getting ready to add a library and art museum.
The election process Is not eodangered by a few $~0 donations to
politicians. It Is endangered by elected politicians who refuse to do !be
wm of the people wbo elected them. There bas been overwhelming
sentiment In this town against such things as Promontory Point and
the Delaney's Cannery Village, but the city bosses have Ignored that
sentiment. •
Over and over again In this country, people have said tbey doo't
want one-man rule. But, when we have a part-ttme mayor and a part-
time City Counclltumlngoverthelrrespooslbnttlestoone city manager,
Isn't that a ldnd of one-man rule? The city manager, the city attomey -
all of the people at City Hall -are our employees. If they can't be loyal
and obedient to our wishes, shouldn't we fire them? Is It right for the
city manager to stick his nose Into every real estate transaction In town?
WileD we decide to build an oft-street parldng fund from meter
receipts, and use tbat fund to provide parking In !be same districts In
which the money Is raised, don't we have the right to eJpeCt our city
manager and our Councn to follow througb? Where Is tbe off-street
parting we need so badly In Central Newport? Where Is tbe money? Our
Chamber of Commerce Is supposed to oversee this fund? Why are
they silent?
Now, CouncUwoman Lucllle Kuehn, whose schoolgirl lllnocence Is out
of place amoog these rough-and-tumble politicians, wants to spend
$7,500 of our money to take a poll and f1Dd out what the people want.
We have TOLD the Councn what we want, and they have Ignored us.
Wby should we pay $7,500 for the prtvtlege of telling them again?
I believe a.few conclusions can be made now from what bas happened
In thta town:
The Grand Jury SHOULD look Into our city government. There's
plenty there to look at. .
The district attorney, who Investigates his political enemies at the
drop of a bat, should Investigate the political enemies of the voters
of Newport Beacb.
Out of town newspapers, who leod valuable editorial support to some
of tllese guys, should either do tllelr job of lnnstlgatlng what goes on,
or IIley should admit to their Newport Beacb readers U..t they don't have
tbe journaJistlc guts to do tbelr job.
People have been talking the past few days about a recall election to
clean out City HaU.IcHsacree.Itblnll:they should all resign. Tbe mayor,
and Mr. Dostal -all of tile Councn tbat bu become entangled In tbls
mess -the city manager, !be city attomey, and the parts and beaches
director.
Let's start all over and see If we can't hire a city goYernmeot thai
