Since a cubit equals eighteen inches, that would 'mean that the stones were aboul lhirtY-seven feet lo03, twel.e feet high and eighteen feet wide. One can still see some of these immense rtones 11 the Jewish Wailina WaD, • part of the west wall of the Temple Area, separalinJ it from the city. Coron• Del MM • 17141 171-0100 THE OL AMERICAN There's a lot of talk nowadays about ''senior cltlr.ens," which is )1st a Madison Avenue polttlca.l term for old Americans. Somehow, there seems to be a theory around that older tolks are 1n a second childhood, and don't really understand what's happening IDday. You know, lbere )lsi might be something to that notion. If you grew up 70 or 80 years ago, things were a lot dltlerent, and It DOES get pretty hard to understand some of the newer ways. For uample: The Old American belleved 1n a very small government, and the guys who ran H weren't considered big shots or polltical superstars. They were just citizens who had the time and the money to take their turn serving the community. The $1 a day guy didn't have the time nor brains lor the job. When IDday's Old American was younc, he look care ol his elderly parents, If they couldn't take care ol themselves. He didn't ask the tupoyers to do 11, U a group ol workers wanted to organize a union, they could do 11 without turning 11 over to gangsters. It's hard lor the Old American to understand strikes by pollee- men, firemen, doctors and bosptta.l workers. There were oo "zoning" laws. U you wanted to build somethtng on your property, you built 11, as long as It dlclo'l harm your neighbor. The Old American was more concerned with what he could do for hts country than what his couotry could do tor him. He paid more attention to keeping government under control, IDsiMd ol asldog governmeol tor everylh!ni lind giving up his Uberty In uchaoge tor a handout, If the Old American sbowed a little pride In his own race, that was line as long as he dlclo'l burt anybody else, Nowadays, It you're white, you're a bigot If you take pride In your tamUy heritage, Sure, we helped people who needed help, but we dlclo'l make weltare a God-given rlgllt tlat went to uybody crooked enough to lind a way to get II. And an alcoholic was a drunk. DOt a "stet" persoo wbo got medical welfare. It's bard tor the Old American to understand the tlsherman who gels a boat, gD<ls out tor ooe trip at the end ol the -son, !hOD packs himself UJd his wlte ott to the hospital tor a covernmeol..pald operation, new teeth and new glasses, !hOD sits oo his backalcle aDd draws unemploymODI uniU nul tlshlog season. And, some ol these . guys coulclo'l catch a ardlne In a can. 11'1 jull another weltare game, Just another way to laYe you aDd me oupportoom-y else. · In New York, lbe town Is gotnc broke because lhtn are more people oo lbe dolo thon there are to produce to pay lbe dolo. Wonder how the Old American wbo grew up 1n New York around . the turn of till century !eels about that.
