take In more area. Hopefully, the de-
cision on downcoast annexation would
be negative. Let the City of Irvine take
the coastal lands, and the additional
problems. We have enough of our own. • • • • * THEY CAN'T BE SERIOUS!
An Incredible folly is being pursued
by some members of the Orange County
Board of Supervisors --the proposal
to hire a lobbyist to do the co=ty
begging in Washington, with an annual
budget of some $100,000, Former Con-
gressman Richard 1ianna is being sug-
gested as the lobbyist, since he has
some exp·~rtlse in getting some of that
"free" fed money for the home folks.
We all lmow that the biggest single
expens<!'-'b" 11• ·tax-burdened ~iti~~>lis
is the enllr'lft')bs cost of government.
Will this acheme increase or decrease
that burden? The answer is obvious,
It will Increase the tax load, of course.
And multiply that extra cost by the
s everal thousand other go·ternm•mtal
entities throughout the land who will be
following s •Jit to get their paws in the
public trough, and you get some idea
of the enormity of the folly.
W 1ll the lobbyists help cut down or
boost up the present level of the so-
called federal revenue sharing? Ob-
viously, to prove their w0rth to the home
folks, they'll be doing their utterm•1St
to get Congress to vote ml•re and mnr e
of that "fr ee" c ash, so that the poli-
ticians back home can embark on more
of their pet projects, which they are
afraid to put up u 1he approval of the
local voters. So, the result would be
more revenue sharing fWlding, and each
dollar we get would be added to th•
horrendous national debt, plus the
customary federal brokerage fee, and
the deadly inflation spiral would con-
tinue at an int"!reasing pace --toward
national bankruptcy.
It's not too late to return to fiscal
sanity. Let's start right here at home
by rejecting this boondoggle.

minute difference between
time shown by watches of
tbe trains' engineers. The
watch whlch was off had
run so accurately so long
that the engineer assumed
that It was always right,
not knc7wtng· that a tiny
speck of coal had caused
an error.
After this accident, a
Cleveland watchmaker-
jeweler worked out a rigid
lnspectloo system based on
the requirement that a rail-
road watch must not lose
or gain more than 30 se<:-

In 1892, the Hamilton
Watch Company of Lan-
caster, Pennsylv~ta. was
